In an edition of "Kent's People", Kent Brockman tells the story of Frank Grimes, a man who "had to struggle for everything he got in life." After seeing the show, Springfield Nuclear Power Plant owner Mr. Burns is so touched that he asks Smithers to hire Grimes as his Executive Vice President.

What was hilarious to me is how burns asks homer to explain his model softly with excitement and curiosity: 1) implies he already fell in-love with a planet that looks just like his. So much that he completely transitions his adversarial attitude. 2) calling him "young man" implies that he doesn't make any age distinctions in that range, even not between children and adults. 3) calling him "young man" implies that he doesn't know who homer is yet again XD 4) bonus: homer is so excited about the contest he he is OK with burns not recognizing him

I watched this episode when it aired and the interesting thing about coming back to revisit it over time you realize how your own perception changes. At first Frank’s zany actions are comedic, then you empathize with him, but eventually you realize that he’s let bitterness really consume him to the point where he’s being adversarial to Homer, who’s tried being nothing but friendly to him. In a sense Lenny and Carl’s support of Homer is like a mirror image of Grimes. Lenny and Carl even talk about how they’re credentialed (as Frank is) while Homer isn’t, but that doesn’t stop them from being friends.
@frankwest5388
@frankwest5388 Жыл бұрын
while Grimes is right that Homer did sort of fall upwarts all his life, Grimes ignored the real reason to why. Which is that Homer is nice and likeable. People want Homer in their lives since he makes it better and wants to be everyones friend. So, they want good things to happen to him. While Grimes is all about work. He has no friends, because he is too goal focused to let anyone in and get close to him. Of course no one will give him a promotion, he is an ass to everyone. I like to think that this realization is what broke him. Everyone hated him and not Homer. Love and friendship isn't earned accademically or at the work place. He wasted his life doing something he hates alone, assuming that the sheer act of doing stuff you hate and nothing else means success. While Homer was content by explicatly not doing that.

@@frankwest5388 This. Homer provides for his family and he's a great guy to have a beer with and hang out. Even those that Homer has hated over the years, such as Flanders, Homer still showed him humanity at Flanders lowest point. We had a team member have a breakdown once. He was a hard worker like the rest of us. We all got on well in and out of work. One day, out of the blue, he smashed his keyboard down, stood up and started screaming bad about every one of us. Yelling out all the things we wanted to improve but weren't allowed to in front of the boss. There was no warning about it. He was fine and then he wasn't. Obviously, he was fired on the spot. Didn't even take his stuff. The rest of us got a telling about procedures and why they are the way they are and why we won't be changing them. 3 months later ... procedures were changed to match the ones he'd been screaming about. Credit went to the office snitch who had "been thinking about it for a while"

I can identify way too much with that. While I'd never go the full route to actually smash stuff or scream at someone my previous workplace was quite similar - we were still working with internal tools written in Flash in 2020. 2 weeks ago I got my termination letter, even tho I was considered "one of the best that came in a few years" ... maybe I should have taken 20 minute trips to the vending machine, avoiding work watching netflix, putting in minimal effort by the scheme "at least I tried" and failing simple tasks like some of my former workmates.

@@meyague Grimey is the polar opposite of Homer. He works hard, and applies himself. He’s had to overcome adversity at every stage in his life with little to no reward or recognition and when he sees Homer breezing through life his frustration boils over. In that sense, his envy is justified. It’s not Homer’s fault, but Grimey is powerless so that’s where he directs his anger. This is why I think he’s so relatable.

What Grimes didn’t understand is that Homer is a MASTER of subtle flattery. All Burns cares about is money. Martins design worked and would ACTUALLY HELP PEOPLE, which is why Burns hated it. Homers was a replica of what works for Burns now, with added facade improvements that won’t take away from what they have now. Plus, Homers co workers love it because it wouldn’t eliminate their jobs, as Burns implied in the beginning.

The moral of this episode, as one of the writers puts it, is that sometimes you just can’t win. Frank Grimes’s disdain and even jealousy of Homer was his undoing. Instead, he became obsessed with discrediting Homer to the point that it eventually drove him mad.

Homer met Marge and made an effort to court her, he sacrificed a lot for her and the kids all while being the child of a motherless home with an unloving father. Homer put himself out there and his attitude, when he decides to stop being lazy, is very endearing to a lot of other characters. Frank on the other hand is bitter, hes bitter of everyone who isnt him and didnt work as hard as him. He isolates himself and upon learning of Homer's good fortune decides to bully and ridicule him instead of learning how he can live better. But remember your dealing with Mr. Burns he lacks vision and doesn't see anything wrong with the current plant. So Homer gave Mr. Burns what he wanted, a copy of the current plant with some minor modifications. Instead he tried to prove a point that went nowhere and reacted badly to it. Worst thing was that Homer was genuinely trying to be friends with him or at least make some peace with Grimes after pissing him off. So...Grimes ended up causing his own demise. You feel bad for the guy being an unlucky son of a bitch but he was growing spiteful towards Homer who really wasn't trying to be a dick and it ends badly. .......Really does not help Homer literally forgot that he died years later...In front of the man's son.

What makes this scene even darker I think is that Frank Grimes knew he was gonna die. Once he snaps at 1:45 he's come to the realization that it is better to be dead than live with his worst enemy being adored. Once he saw the high voltage wires, he knew he was going to die and he was at peace with it. In fact the last frame we seem of Frank Grimes touching the wires is him smiling.

I love how everyone’s trying to find real-life meaning in this episode when the creators themselves said Grimes was meant to be a “what-if someone from the real world ended up in Simpson’s universe”. But ironically people just see him simply as “the bitter guy” and not much else lmao. He acts so frustrated because he’s found himself in a literal cartoon world where 2+2=5, of course he’s going mental
@dagan8659

not. is true that the author said he is a person who basically come from reality logic, but he is still a bitter dumbass, there are real peoples like homer in real life who are getting way more than they value, still we don't loose our minds, if someone different was sent there, he would just be pissed, but adapt quicly and not overeact by going "mental".
@LordDaret
@LordDaret 2 ай бұрын
The true solution for 2+2=5 is to assume there is an unknown variable, not getting angry that it exists. Frank should have accounted for that to turn the current situation in his favor, not throw a temper tantrum that others were thinking differently from him.

I think if Homer hadn’t been the one Frank Grimes would have ended up giving up. For all his troubled past and how he came over it he was defeated so easily and ended acting like a petulant child when the grass seemed greener on the other side. He was so particular as well, like it was almost like he wanted things his way or it wasn’t happening

Its kind of terrifying how many people are trying to justify Homer in this episode. Homer is destroying Grimes - eating his pencils, barging into his office, stealing his lunch, getting him in trouble with the boss and nearly sacked - and yet people *still* claim Grimes is unhinged. It reminds me of the recent wave of schoolyard bullies who have grown up to basically claim that the people they bullied kind of deserved it for being so annoying and ugly

@@JarmamStuff well I mean, homer doesn't mean to ruin his life, in fact he tried to be friends with him, its just that he's an idiot, he even invited him to his house and grimes still got jealous and lashed out on homer, its just that it's a realistic man put in this cartoony world, grimes could have simply just ignored him, but the thing is grimes always expect good things to happen to hard working people, which is kinda a bad mindset because employers could just take advantage of that like burns just did

@@JarmamStuff Wow, at last I find someone who thinks with the brain. So many people defending Homer and attacking Grames makes me think how really most people are at the world. Is everybody like Homer? OMG I hope not. Of course he was a bully, he is useless and makes a lot of mistakes. He doesn´t deserve what he has, and the point of making his character is just hipocresy, nothing else. He is not the hero here.

@@LauRa-re9unthe reason why people defend Homer is simply because he wasn’t the problem, Mr. Burns was the issue. Homer is in his position because Burns NEEDS an incompetent moron of a safety inspector who will never do his job or report any problems. He is the perfect person since he is a good natured, durable fool who won’t stir up trouble and keep co-workers pacified. Grimes on the other hand never made friends and just stuck his nose to the grind stone. He was smart, but he failed to see the bigger picture or learn what type of person Homer is. Plus by doing his job, he was doomed to receive Burns’ attention.
