Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #299
Supposedly, when you slide down the Kelso Sand Dunes from the very top, the friction produces a low-frequency booming or singing sound. So I hiked up to the top and slid down, to see if it's true!

Thank You Sarah Jane for sharing "what U see" with us. You see the different patterns, textures, colors, shades. From the dragonfly's to the mountain ridge's we "SEE" the beauty because U share your way of "SEEING" with us. It is a "GIFT" to "SEE" the details. NOT every one has this "ARTIST GIFT". And......only, a "TRUE ARTIST" is compelled to share it. GOD BLESSES ALL 4-EVER !!!

I hiked these in April of 2000 with my friend. It was super windy that day and hearing the dunes hum was awesome. Sorta shocked at the amount of footprints now, esp. during the first part - it is obviously more heavily trafficked. I guess relatively close proximity to I-15 and smartphones has changed everything.

Hi wonderhussy! This video is awesome! The beautiful white flowers are called Desert Primrose! They turn into those birdcage plants I'm sure you've seen. Keep up the good work my husband and I both love you and your channel , maybe we can meet someday when you are traveling through Joshua Tree National Park. Have A Wonderful Day

I've camped in those scraggly trees a couple of times. Pretty cool. Climbing a sand dune is really hard work. I think snowshoes might be the best thing to wear.

First saw Kelso in 1967. We used to camp next to a cattle pond a little way down the railroad tracks and ride the dunes on our thumpers...long before the friggin BLM closed it to protect some weed or other that grows there. The train station was still open then, serving as lodging and food service for train crews on the Union Pacific. You could walk right in and order up a full meal for a buck or so - piece of fresh-baked cherry pie for 5¢! We flattened pennies on the tracks when the freight train went by... Even though it pissed me off when the BLM shut it down, I'm glad it never became Glamis or Dumont dunes with all the trash (human and other). We always had the place to ourselves, often in March, when there was sometimes snow on the dunes in the early morning light. Now, it's just a memory, but a sweet one. Thanks for the lovely video...

Love the Kelso Sand Dunes. We spent many weekends out there in the mid 60's, before they closed the area to dunebuggies. We would run down from the top and slide, and it did make a fairly loud rumble. The road used to be a very washboardy dirt road, so there was only a few other groups going out there. Love your videos Wonder

Hey Huss, those white flowers are Desert Evening Primrose. They are one of my favorites and they also appear in sandy areas of the Eastern Oregon deserts. They are especially fond of dunes and are a good reason why vehicles should not be allowed on these environmentally sensitive areas. You may have noticed that the sand of desert dunes is much finer and silkier than dunes of the ocean coasts. I do not exactly know why this is, but it is true. Speaking of dunes, I think an excellent place for you to make a video would be Fossil Lake, near Christmas Valley, Oregon. It is a really cool place where the fossilized remains of many creatures can be found, including salmon that were eight feet long. Damn! You sure are pretty when you have your sunglasses off.

I looked it up. The grains of sand need to be about the same size. The top sand has to be dry with a damper layer underneath. It it has just the right slope when the top layer slides off they will all resonate at the same frequency creating the booming sound. It's not completely understood, but that is a theory.

Thanks for the story on Kelso. I want to see that museum if I can ever get free to head out that way. And I was just thinking, this was a great way to work out your "dune legs" for your upcoming trip. You'll also want to workout your "dune eyes". Reading the tracks in the sand in the dunes anywhere is like reading a newspaper...give you an idea of the social climate in the area...like which bird flew in for supper...or which lizard took a little day...er...night trip. Got a kick out of the "crackin' walnuts thing(8-). I could always easily crack English walnuts with my hands...but never with my butt cheek muscles. Black walnuts...fugidaboudit(8-).

The Big Dune at Armagosa is a singer/hummer too. Riding my ATV out there I was told to hit the engine kill switch after driving over the edge to hear it. Driving over the edge was scary enough, but the humming was pretty weird hearing it for the first time.

That flower is likely the Dune Evening Primrose - Oenothera deltoides or Pale Desert Primrose - Oenothera pallida As for the 'singing sands', Oregon's dunes on the coast, on some of the sharper angled dunes, you can experience that low frequency wail, squeak, or whatever you want to call it.
