Great video as always. Also, for anyone who reads this: Chris' videos on youtube led me to his free voice lessons led me to buy his online singing course and I couldn't be happier with it. I've been singing for about 20 years now, starting out by just trying to sound like my idols (Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley...), I had voice lessons and took online courses. While I credit all of them with improving my singing, Chris does something that is absolutely unique (in my experience): he truly gives you the tools to explore all the great possibilites YOUR OWN voice has. This cannot be rated high enough. If you are truly interested in becoming a better singer, at least check out his free course. Chris, thanks a lot, I'm at week seven right now (taking my sweet time, there is a lot to experiment with) and I'm very happy to have discovered you. You're a great teacher.

Excellent analysis. It drove me crazy for at least a decade hearing all the imitators misunderstand his voice and listeners seemingly not notice or care. One of my favorite Vedder vocal moments is in Elderly Woman, the climb and eventual peak with "my God it's been so long, never dreamed you'd return" I've probably sang it over a hundred times trying to get it right and never been satisfied.

Good old eddie, my wife loves pearl jam actually, she knows all the lyrics and stuff, man the 90s gave us amazing rock singers. Have you heard the soundtrack eddie did for "into the wild" (great movie by the way, directed by sean penn), its a surprisingly good album, it has some of his more subdued songs, lots of those soulfull notes there, its worth a listen for sure

The section where Eddie sings "safest place" he sounds like Cornell.

This is probably the best video I’ve ever seen for vocal training. This is insanely informative. Subscribed. Also, a fun fact about Eddie-his main vocal influence is Bono. Most people don’t know that. But if you go listen to albums like Joshua Tree, you can definitely hear the influence.

Eddie should be doing voices for Pixar movies.

Chris, this video was actually a huge breakthrough in me understanding my own voice. I have a pretty deep, resonant voice like Eddie so it can be pretty hard to find singers to emulate and study how they utilize a voice that's that low. I know this is an old video, so don't know if you'll see this, but it would be really cool if you could do a video about basses using examples from rock and mainstream music sometime, since I feel like we tend to get kind of left out in the conversation lol. Thanks for these videos, they're more helpful than you probably even realize!

Eddie has the GOAT vibrato 13:33. I’m curious if he’s ever mentioned having vocal training at all or if he’s just instinctively amazing. Eddie’s vocal timbre and the intensity he sings with can’t be duplicated. Really interesting analysis!

I think explaining Eddie's singing style technically is a great project in itself, thanks much, for he's my all time favorite... ...though I think it should be added how and why he (or any other singer/musician) comes up with their style of singing/playing. And I think it has greatly something to do with the personal philosophy of the person: which with Vedder, I think is 'no pretension, not singing to impress but just to express'... which, 'translates' into his style of singing and in all its technicalities and choice of lyrics... Cuz we might be able to learn or actuate/perform all the correct technical attributes of Vedder's singing styles, but without knowing 'philosophically, where he/it is emanating from' (to express uncompromisingly, not to impress, which innately entails basing what/how you are or what/how you do [sing/play] on others' approval), ... ...we might not still fully understand and truly feel-ingly perform, his style... (Or any other singer/musician for that matter...) (For example, if one's personality is more of the wanting-to-impress-others kind, however he learnt and perfected Vedder's singing style, it will still sound fake or 'un-Vedder-ish', much like a jazzer by heart playing the notes of a Mozart piece perfectly.... His real [singing] 'feel' will 'show' inadvertently...) ... (?)

Sounding like a broken record here with my comments on so many of your videos, but I keep being amazed by how well you explain complex things 🤘🏽 taking so many notes both mentally and in the Notes app! experimenting with my voice was - and is - daunting especially with people around the house, but you’ve made it so much fun that I don’t really care if I sound bad/stupid. More abstractly though, I think you express a very Adlerian way of the world; if you haven’t read it already, I think you’d enjoy the book ‘The Courage to be Disliked’. These videos and exercises have been a perfect medium to put the concepts in the book into real world situations. Thanks and all the best ❤

OMG, i am a little late but hey... I always could feel that, listening to Creed singer or some other "singers", but i could never explain it. Like they holding cotton balls in their mouth or something is the closest thing i could come up with. I hated them for it. I could never took them serious and i hated every note coming out of them.Eddie is unique.Unparalelled.He is force of nature. Amazing voice, original voice and he became a trope codifier. So smart how you let us hear his talking voice first and that is how he sings. I was always saying to people, for the love of God listen the way that man speaks!!!!I think that was brilliant what you did. Thank you so much for doing this video. Great analysis of Eddie’s voice! Really got a lot out of it! For more low end style singers, I’d love to hear either Mark Lanegan and/or Rufus Wainwright. To my ear they both have great tone, vibrato, and do cool things with compression. Thank you once again!🙏

Started vocal lessons this year for the first time and my teacher freaked out after hearing for the first time because of how much my voice apparently resembles Eddie Vedder’s. After watching this I understand now lmao. I can always instinctively tell what it feels like to sing something the same way Eddie does before trying it myself and the way he sings is how I’ve always just felt comfortable singing. Also, I thought that this is just how vibrato was done lol, never thought that the way I did it wasn’t the standard way.😅

nailed it, I talk like Eddie with an Australian accent mind you, but I have that resonance and my singing voice tends to have a similar qualities to him. Probably a little Eddie influence as a huge fan but mostly just a style that comes naturally to me.

Man I just came across your channel and I am a HUGE Pearl Jam fan I've loved them since they first came out I was 14 now I'm 38 and I'm still in love with Eddie's voice. So this video was amazing to me. Thank you. It is very hard to find someone that can get his voice right. I can't stand those cover bands that try to get Eddie's voice down and totally botch it. It's so cringy to me. I was a singer in a rock/ metal band for 17 years and the guys always wanted to do Pearl Jam but I always said no just bc I didn't feel like I could do his voice Justice. I'm rambling now but just wanted to thank you for this video. I'm hoping people can take this and learn from it as it was intended. 😀

Funny, I was thinking about Eddie's voice just last night. First heard pearl jam on the radio and was absolutely captivated with his voice. Didn't know who Pearl Jam was, but couldn't get enough of that voice! Doubt that he stops to analyze his vocals. It's all passion.

Ed’s voice is so interesting as it is ever evolving. Check out a performance from 1991 then 1994 then 1998 then 2003 completely different sound. Gotta say his voice from 1993-1995 is so awesome. Really dropped a lot of that signature throat sound that got made fun of and pushed to a more nasally voice.

Chris you have already covered three of the big four Grunge stars... Kurt Cobain has to be the next singer! Even if you're going to mock on his techniquee and tell us why it was terrible and how it hurt his voice. Maybe give us some tips on how to kind of get his technique in a healthy way? (Btw, I love Kurts voice and I don't think he gets enough credit as a good singer. I just think his technique wasn't too healthy and I never heard someone say it was...)

Nice video, i think your on point with people trying to imitate with that curled back of throat technique, it often comes off dumb. Ive been doing his stuff for years in bands and whatever, while i do whole heartedly agree with you, i feel just a little touch of this at times (and i mean little) can come off tasteful and slightly authentic for the listner. My normal talking voice is similar to Eddie so i get lucky there. Very good video though! Best one out there on Eddie imo
