The lignocellulose from sawdust and woodchips adds very good water holding capacity to the compost when decomposed. We impregnate those materials in liquid nitrogen fertilizer before adding them to the worm bins. Bigger woodchips promote aeration inside the compost heap.

Ooh, you can put coffee grounds? Worms like coffee grounds? I have a bunch saved up, I was saving it for my garden but I've been too sick to start a Garden. I have Lyme, that makes me so weak I can barely make one meal a day. I'm growing the worms for my turtle I've had 18 years, they stopped selling his fav food. The only other thing he will eat is worms & live goldfish. I can't get to the store for either because of the stupid virus that has ruined everyone's year! I'm deducting a year from my age! I'm not going to count this year.

Question for you. I had always understood that the inner wood of a tree is pretty devoid of nutrients and is mostly carbon which, while helpful, won't sustain a plant in itself. That's why tree bark is so in demand. It has all the nutrients. Many nutrients go to the leaves too, which is why leaf mold (composted leaves) is about the most expensive compost you can buy. If you can find it. I've always had good experience with homemade leaf mold in my potting mixes. Perhaps you were talking about after the wood has composted down? I don't know, I have a lot to learn about wood and compost I'm sure, but I thought I should ask.

I was wondering the same thing. Also, if you get a truckload of wood chips isn’t it possible to potentially get wood from trees that were sprayed with pesticides. I am more comfortable using ingredients for bedding that I know is organic.

This man has taken time to offer some great advise on proper bedding for worms, some of you got schooled, and learned some good things, from watching. Then you got your folks that want to comment about the creator talking too much? What is wrong with you people? It's his video? He does it for free to help people who are seeking information about this? You folks are antagonist, and probably gripe about every single thing you do, see, hear, taste, and smell, all day, everyday? Thank you for your tutorial, sir. It was very helpful. Don't mind the one's that choose to comment negative thoughts. They really can't help themselves.? They lack respect, the ability to focus their attention more than 11 seconds on any one subject. Prayers for the short syndrome commentators posting these absurd comments. People need to try and be supportive and kind. That goes for every aspect in their lives. They will be much more effective, productive, and feel much better about their lives and themselves. Explore that small mind you have, instead of being programmed? Those who lived many years before the internet, know how to use their heads and learn by trying different ways to accomplish and learn about things by trial and error. Those who have known nothing but the internet existence, you have so many resources to research different subjects, and learning ways of doing things, just a click away. So, my point is...if you have the internet of resources, and you don't know how to do anything? Then you're really lazy and have no desire to increase your knowledge about anything.

I started composting with night crawlers about 6 months ago and in the last month I have been finding at least one night crawler dead everyday and sometimes I even find 4 or 5 that are dead or dying. I’m using coconut husk, tulip tree mulch, some dirt from my back yard, paper and cardboard as bedding plus I add coffee grounds and calcium about once every month or two, which is what I see a lot of people using so I don’t think that’s it and I only ever feed them once a week and I only feed them vegetables and fruit. Do you think this is normal or should I be concerned? I have two 30 gal bins with around 1000 worms in each one.

You might just be reaching a population ceiling for the size container you have. They naturally cull themselves off and manage their own population pretty good. If you notice the population fluctuating or steadily decreasing, or a sudden decrease in productivity, than that is a concern. But worms will naturally die off at a certain population density.

I'm on a forum that discusses keeping salamanders. It covers care of and raising worms as food. I've seen talk of there being salt in coir and to rinse it very well. I've also seen a video on you tube with some species of worms totally avoiding coir. They were only found on the side with shreded paper moistened of course. He didn't mention rinsing and may not be aware of the salt. I do read that some breeders avoid it all together. I've also read that it can be used sparingly in a good bedding mix of shredded paper products. I just come across a product called magic worm bedding, along with Fragile brand as well. These come with feed mixed in it. It really just looks like finely ground paper. Its fluffy and pretty sure the grayish color is the inked paper. Good luck with your worms.

Hey Greg, I raise red worms and euro worms, I am under the impression that any of the deciduous tree leaves make great worm bedding, easy to get, lots of nutrients and microbes in the leaves. Wouldn’t wood chips take quite a bit of time to break down into humus before you could use them for worm bedding?

If you're talking about seeds found in manure, they can last several years depending on conditions. I garden with cow manure as I have an endless supply. The two year old mixture of rotted manure & hay I use will always push up a crop of weeds when I fill a bed with it. Not really a problem though unless you're doing it on huge scale - just a little weeding & its fine.

Shannon, I planted squash seeds that were supposed to be planted 2 years ago & not a single one sprouted. I'm not a newbie. I have houseplants alive 14 years & hardened for 10 years in containers. How do you get the old seeds to germinate?
@riffhurricane
@riffhurricane 4 жыл бұрын
@@redpilled4781 This year I've had mixed results with old seeds. Two year old coourgette/zuchini seeds came up no problem, but the old beet seeds I planted didn't throw up a single plant. My storage regime has been slack, & this year I will be freezing my saved seeds, which I'm told preserves them almost indefinitely. As for getting old seeds to germinate there's a few tricks people use depending on what plant is being grown. Some need soaking first while others benefit from being put in a fridge before sowing. With others it helps to scarify the seed casing (without breaking it) before planting. Really horses for courses.

Have you ever, or ever considered, adding rock dust/volcanic ash/sea minerals to your worm beds or worm tea making? I have read that the microbia will incorporate the minerals into bioavailable forms. Molasses in the worm tea is wonderful! As the “leftover” from sugar extraction, it has the mineral density of the soil in which it was grown. One of the major problems with our crops today is the mineral depletion of our soils. I am currently rereading “Dirt” by David Montgomery and “Collapse” by Jared Diamond, both of which document the consequences of agricultural erosion. SCARY READING. NOT NOT NOT FICTION! The Greater Creator put us in charge of HIS garden, and we will answer to HIM for our stewardship. One of the classic definitions of insanity is repeating an action while expecting a different result. Such has been the use of the plow. Many blessings!

Red Pilled Dirt and Collapse will give you nightmares. They document how short term greed and soil mining agriculture have destroyed and/or are destroying our ability to feed ourselves worldwide, and it has been going on for millennia. EARTH MUST BE FED!!! Nature does not create waste; it recycles.

@vickisavage8929 4 жыл бұрын
Red Pilled There are multiple reasons why commercial crops are flavorless compared to traditional crops. Yes, they are being grown in nutrient deficient soils. They also have been bred for uniformity of size, shape, and maturation.They have NOT been bred for flavor. They have generally been picked green, as soon as they reach full size, for long term storage. There are very few crops which MUST be allowed to ripen on the plant. They have been bred to ship and store, to be “profitable,” not delectable. Traditional, now mostly backyard, crops, ARE bred for flavor. Picked ripe, at their flavor peak, some are so delicate that they hardly survive the trip from plant to kitchen. (I’m thinking peaches.) I will save my rants on commercial vs. backyard growing practices for another time.
