This report of a collision in the lower reaches of the Thames reminds me of my Grandmother referring to the tragedy of the excursion steamer "Princess Alice" in Gallion's Reach on the 3rd September 1878 when she was hit by the collier "Bywell Castle" with the loss of between 600 and 700 lives. My grandmother, who died in 1959, must have heard of this as a very young girl, and it had an impact on her memory, much as the "Titanic" sinking had on my mother, who was seven years old when that tragedy occurred.

Fantastic one LH. I spent 6 months on an old 60's DDR stern dragger, and all the crew, (ex-communist German fishing fleet) were convinced the CIA sunk the Magdeberg. ( That ship, the MS Stubnitz, is still in commission as a mobile art and culture space, her machinery is made by SKL, from the city of.. Magdeberg!) Also, Spencer Rigging is just down the road from where I am sitting now! Thanks for you work, fair winds Jerry

Thanks Jerry. I have seen the Stubnitz, she came to London in 2012 or there abouts and visited the Royal Docks and got towed to West India from there.
