I thought schittino was bad but this prick had the nerve, the gall and the audacity to just abandon all his passengers without even a word of warning, he was lucky no one died no thanks to him. And a massive amount of respect to the entertainment crew for managing to successfully evacuate the entire ship with zero casualties.

At the very least Schettino did Initially make an attempt to make the Costa Concordia a worst disaster than it was. He did order the ship to be drifted closer to the coast. If he didn't so this, far more lives would have been alot worse. Don't get be wrong. Schettino is a scum bag deserved to be sentenced. But unlike the evil "captain" of the Oceanos, who did nonthing, Schettino at the very least did Something to prevent the death toll to be worse than it was.

There's a difference between being in shock and having to take a moment to collect yourself (understandable in such a situation) and just ignoring everybody throughout the sinking and then trying to abandon the ship, leaving behind hundreds of people to fend for themselves.

True, but then also the rest of the senior staff seemed to have acted in a similar fashion. The first officer should have taken command, possibly with the help of the doctor of the ship and declare the captain unfit for duty. But it seems there was more going on here.

The fact that you call out scoundrels who have no business captaining ships is one of the things I like about you. It shows that you have saltwater in your veins, Sam. The sea is beautiful and full of mystery, but it is powerful beyond our comprehension and utterly unforgiving. My dad was a captain, mostly of small sailing vessels, and I grew up on the water and learned to love and deeply respect the sea. To put it succinctly, it is no place to f*ck around, and I will always applaud the way you tell it like it is with these sea clowns. Thanks for all your great work.

The cargo vessel "SS Marine Sulphur Queen" is also such a story (albeit very underreported because "only" crew died). Basically, she was not seaworthy *and* on fire when she left port for her last voyage. Fires on board were actually so common that the crew stopped sounding the fire alarm and just let it burn...

Captain Avranas was actually defended by Epirotiki Line. He continued to command ships after the accident until his retirement. This is a quote from Captain Alevizos Klaudatos, the head of Epirotiki Line: "Of course the crew members assigned to the boats have to enter first in order to assist the embarkation of the passengers", "as regards the captain abandoning the vessel, this is untrue and he has maintained his position throughout in assisting the rescue in the most effective way". Make of that what you will.

Great video Sam. I had heard the phrase "the captain is God" used to describe the traditional airline culture that was a major factor in some crashes (United Flight 173), but I did not know that there were any captains arrogant enough to tell people to call them God. Also, nice rage meter and rage quit. Given the maritime focus of this channel I would have thought the rage meter graphic would be an old-fashioned steam pressure gauge with a red line above the highest pressure reading, but that would probably be difficult to draw/animate.

If you thought this was angering, SS Artic's story is enough to make you burst into tears with anger. The ship's crew were so selfish, that almost everyone aboard died. Unlike this story, it wasn't the Captain's fault. He was actually the hero of the story. The SS Artic suffered a huge collision and began sinking uncontrollably. However, before any of the passengers could make it into the lifeboats, when the Captain was busy mustering up as many passengers as he could below deck, the crew mutined and stole almost every lifeboat on the deck. Not to mention, some of the passengers began to get violent as they realized they had been left to die, and took the opportunity to sexually assualt many of the woman on the ship. Almost all the passengers on board died, and the few survivors nearly lost their sanity by what had happened. If you thought Costa Concordia was bad this was a thousand times worse! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i6t3psiD2rCYiKs.html
@zyloproductions4870
@zyloproductions4870 Жыл бұрын
Not to mention those who had mutinied tried to turn the Captain into a villain like the Costa Concordia's captain and the Oceanos's captain, saying that he was incompetent and he was responsible for the deaths. However, the captain wasn't the one to blame in this story. Worse, he already had enough trauma in his life to become a pariah. He lost his 11-year-old son in the disaster and was one of the last three people to be rescued. They were stranded out there for DAYS, floating on a piece of debris. One of them lost their sanity, and the captain had to stop that man from committing suicide multiple times. What's also disgraceful, is that Cunard was a massive rival to the Collins line, and even though the three survivors were rescued by a Cunard's vessel, the executives behind Cunard CELEBRATED, making a party out of their rival ship going down. In fact, they organized a PARADE!!!! That's just salt in the wound.

The captain and crew of the Oceanos basically left five hundred people (many of whom were elderly and / or disabled or infirm) to die on a sinking ship in a violent tempest. Rage is the entirely appropriate reaction, it still angers me that this so-called captain faced no consequences for his cowardice. As for Moss Hills, his role in the evacuation of the ill-fated Achille Lauro when she burned in November 1994 has been mentioned elsewhere. I don't know whether I'd be unnerved or reassured by his presence on the same ship as me, but he seems to be wasted as an entertainer. With his calmness under pressure he should study for his Master's licence, he'd make a great sea captain. I'll add my name to the list of those keen to see the Achille Lauro given the Historic Travels treatment. Both beautiful ships, with nice proportions, yacht-like lines and perceptible sheer. I wish cruise liners still looked like this!

And a captain, who in addition to not being the last person to get off the ship, said that abandoning ship was *an option* for people on board. So what was the other option, Going down with the ship?

Love your video as always. I was wondering though have you ever considered doing military vessels? Like the Bismarck, The Indianapolis, stuff like that? I don't know if it would consider it too off-brand for the type of content you like to make.

I don't know what it takes to care so little about the lives of other humans as much as the crew of this ship. Those entertainment staff were absolute heroes and the real crew during the sinking. I would be honoured to help in a situation like this and my first thought would be how to help as many people survive as possible. I can't imagine filling up a lifeboat with personal belongings and leaving all those people unaware of what's going on. That's a total disgrace.

I have been suggesting this since I found your channel. Today is a good day Edit: If you do another shipwreck, you should consider telling the story of the nightmare aboard the SS Arctic

"Abandon ship as a precaution". I am an ER doctor. That's like saying to someone that their family member isn't sick or isn't dying...we are just starting CPR as a precaution.

Give praise to the entertainment staff who took action to save all those on bord. I can't believe the action of the captain. He didn't care about his passgers he cares only about himself. Fantastic video don't bame you for getting angry

It takes a special sort of person to work with others, particularly on a ship where you have to get along and manage, be in charge. I don't know if you have to do this in your own job, but I would dearly love some insight from someone who has been there, into how he could have got so far in life and got away with it. It's never just being good at the job mechanics, it's about the right people skills too.

That's true for the U.S. and other more civilized nations. But sadly, it's very common for people to bride/game the system to get to the top of their profession in other countries.

The Entertainment Director became the Captain and the Guitar Player became the First Mate. The original Officers packed up and left without word. It must have seemed much simpler and easier to just leave. Enough said! I recall a Dutch Passenger Liner with an Indonesian Crew and mostly German Passengers which had a fire aboard ship hundreds of miles off British Columbia in the Pacific. It was in the news in about the 1990's. There was no storm. A fire took place and a crew member or two were killed. The lights went out. As a safety measure the order to Abandon Ship was issued, but the Captain and crew left on their own. The passengers were left onboard on their own. They entered the food area and helped themselves. The crew bobbed nearby. After a few days Canadian Coast Guard arrived and got the crew back aboard. I looked it up online and found little or nothing. Could you locate and report on that?

Amazing the guitarist found himself the sole occupant of the bridge and he knows nothing about the ships operation. But he and the entertainment staff do the job the crew have just deserted. I was fully expecting steam to pour out of your ears and sound like Big 'T's whistle.
