The Slayer's Testament | FULL Doom Lore EXPLAINED

The Dark Ages covered a pretty lengthy period of the Doom timeline. With Hugo Martin, Doom’s game director at id Software, claiming The Slayer’s Testament is “the game we are going to play”, we have some questions. The Slayer's Testament is a main feature of Doom 2016 that told us some of the story of the betrayal of The Slayer and his crusade against Hell.
Just how in-depth is The Slayer’s Testament, how important is it and what insights does it give us into the plot points, locations and enemies in the next Doom game, Doom: The Dark Ages? In this video, I explore the lore and story behind The Slayer's Testament in Doom.

I absolutely love in testament demons talk about him as some sort of ancient evil a myth about a nightmarish beast. Like some of the legends that in fantasy story's characters tell about big old bad guy of story who was such evil and powerful thing that they're have no chance only but locking him in depest and fortified abyss jails they can find.

Considering the nonlinear flow of Time in Hell Doomguy truly was there in the Beginning and End of Hell. As far as the Demons are concerned he’s simply always existed

"The Wretch who shall not be named" doesn't sound like Vallen. The testament is written by the demons and he helped them quite a lot. They have no beef with him, just casual cruelty.

Valen can not be the wretch. "The Wretch who shall not be named," is a demon. Valen was a human from Argent D'nur. Unless Valen became a demon after he betrayed his people, there is no way Valen could be the wretch. The way the wretch is described, he was a demon that forged weapons and armor for the forces of hell, not a warrior. Valen was a warrior. So this wouldn't make sense. It is a fairly interesting idea, though.

Plus i do doubt that valen would become a demon. Yeah he did sold out his people in exchange to have his son back, but turning him into the icon of sin. I think once the game comes out we'll see, and i do kinda hope we'll see or a tease or maybe something about this dark priest that was mentioned in 2016, the priest that "would make even the slayer weep in his shadow' (or something like that....)

@@brianh9131 a Hell priest and a Dark Lord are two completely different things. Dark Lord's are the different rulers of Hell. The same status that Davoth held before he was sealed away by The Father.

Honestly I think the best idea they could do, would be to have the Dark Ages start from when the doom slayer first arrives on Argent D'Nur, up until the point he becomes trapped in hell. With a sequel game being entirely in hell

Just an addition and kind of a clarification. According to the art book, Davoth and his army (the Demons) gradually becomes more powerful and more powerful as long as "evil stuff" occur throughout creation (multiverse). This is probably how the Slayer is able to get stronger from the enemies he killed, as mentioned by the Testaments, because his power and Davoth's are practically linked and one and the same.

Here's what we need for this game to end in good notes; mother demon needs to return for rematch, a story where the archangels are tired of the demons winning and doomslayer works with them to finally end the reign of hell (no betrayal needed from them), Dr. Bretruger reincarnated and betrayed Doomslayer again, a new demon final boss for a new chapter andfinally, Doomslayer vs Morningstar.

The Unmakyr is said to be based off of one of Argent D'nur's weapons, and I noticed that the skull crusher kind of is similar to that weapon in terms that it shoots fragments in many directions, what do ya'll think?

My own personal head cannon is that the Wretch is the voice from the beginning of 2016 who told the Slayer to rip and tear until it is done. It just makes sense to me as he was talking with a lot of familiarity towards the demons so he was probably a demon himself.

Did Samur make the slayer immortal? Seems like the demons would have had the best chance to kill him while he was trapped. Sounds like the divinity machine mixed with the slayers rage makes it impossible for him to die.

I hadn't noticed until recently from the trailer that the imps are back to being more like the classic ones found in the first 3 games. Taller, slower and sorta imposing. I wonder if a possible lore reason is that they evolved to be smaller and faster in 2016 and Eternal solely because of the Slayer's time spent in Hell.

I always found doom interesting but couldn’t afford it as I was 12 when 2016 doom came out and broke when eternal dropped but I recently bought both on steam during the sale and I only wish I bought them sooner

@@117swordsmen ah, yeah... Completely forgot about this one, sorry. It's true, that plasma rifle is probably the most "modern" weapon in the game. Might be a Sentinel counterpart, considering that they are highly advanced too, but I'm not sure. As I looked up at the trailer again, I also noticed that the place where doomguy in a mech fought a titan for a second looked pretty similar to the Mars' surface. The orange mist and the design of the buildings around that scene strangely reminded me about the UAC facilities.
