The Sloop in game is closer to what's called a "Sloop of War" (small square rigged vessel) And at 3:11 that is the HMS Bounty! I proposed to my wife aboard her! Great video and can't wait for the next one!

Sloops of that era more commonly had a gaff-rigged mainsail rather than a bermuda sail. The sloop at 2:30 is a good example of a gaff-rigged sloop. (edit: or possibly a cutter)

Given that SoT is supposedly set before the Golden Age of Piracy (1650 to 1730) and the appearance of the flintlock pistol (invented in the early 1600s), it would put the games setting somewhere in the very early 1600s, by which time the Bermuda rig wasn't in common use yet. A smaller ship like the sloop would very likely still be square-rigged at the time, as gaff rigging was a bit too involved and expensive for such a small ship. Alternatively, it could have been set up as a lateen; still using only a single sail but arranged in a triangle with the mast perpendicular to the center of the lower boom, with the upper boom intersecting the lower at the front tip and meeting the mast at roughly a 45°angle at the mid point of the upper boom. Makes it look and operate like a Bermuda, just a little slower and less maneuverable (but also less complex and expensive) because of a single sail. Also, I wouldn't consider the sloop in-game to be a 3-deck ship, since the captain's cabin is technically only half as high as the other decks if they were continued all the way aft. It's more like a 2½-deck, like how a house with the same arrangement would be called. At 4:07, this isn't considered a sloop by modern standards. Sloops have a single mast, which a ketch or a yawl have two (the arrangement of the mizzen mast - the smaller one aft of the cockpit - being the point of differentiation between a ketch and a yawl). This example would likely be classified as a schooner given that it has 4 masts and a jib sail. The Providence was also a gaff-rigged warship that was built some 150-200 years after SoT was supposed to be set. But yes, shops in general were not designed to be manned by 1-3 sailors with only two cannons. And a galleon wasn't meant for only 4. Hooray for server limits, lol! Finally, why the condescending attitude toward men who own sailing vessels? They're not for "old men with sad, tired manhood." I'm 35 and far from sad or tired. Just saying.

To be honest, the sail configuration of the ships in game are quite off. For example, the brigantine would've had at least 3 sails, of which one would've been a gaff sail. The galleon would have many more sails than it currently does. But I think that this would be percieved as too complex by the devs, so to make it simpler for the crews, the ships would be outfitted with square sails.

"two cannons on either side" would suggest four cannons in total. To say "two cannons, one on either side" is more accurate.

I'd like to see the sloop replaced with a Caravel. They're similar in size, and can be crewed by only two people easily enough (there's a replica that plies the east coast of Australia).

The reason the sloop looks like how it is is because it's not a sloop, but a mini galleon, the pirate lord was the first outsider to enter the sea of thieves, and it is stated that his galleon, The Magpie's Wing, was too big to get through the shroud, and it would've ended up like all of ther other crashed galleons in maiden voyage, so being the seaman Ramsey was, he constructed the sloop with parts from his galleon seen on old sailors isle and what knowledge he knew of ships, most likely calling it a sloop due to it's small size and not appearance, so in conclusion, the sloop is a mini galleon made by Ramsey to get through the shroud, why else do you think maiden voyage doesn't give you a galleon or brig?

the sails your talking about are nicknamed a leg-of-mutton sail (back one) and actually named the jib (on the front) so the basic leg of mutton and jib setup.

I found something. There's a island at r-16 which dosnt show up. It has red plants and very tiny. There's a ship wreck near it under water and a underwater cave which has some odd stone sculptures in, mainly a huge hammer

A Bermuda rid could be used at most wind directions, whereas a square rigged ship could only work when the wind was behind it. In real Life, you cannot sail against the wind with a square sail, and tacking would be near impossible. Most sloops would probably have some for of squaresail, a jib, and a mainsail on a boom.

Sailboats are mostly triangle sails today. Also, you can’t sail directly into the wind in real life ever They should add a schooner to the game like a rowboat with a sail. But because of the sail you can’t dock on your ship or some limit like that

The information in this video is not intierly correct. But it is still a fun video.

Actually your depiction of Sloop sails is improper. The Sloop used both square sails and lateen or Bermuda sails. The question was *where* you were sailing. If you were sailing near coast, a lateen rigging was more efficient for catching breezes from all angles. If you were sailing off the coastline in open ocean, your best bet was to hoist your square rigging because the Coriolis effect meant that winds circulated around the oceans and your route was dependent on catching that wind. That’s why sailing ships took many years to get to where they were going. It was never a straight line like modern self-propelled ships, but rather a large circle following the huge circular cycles of wind. And with the wind being always at your back on such a route, a square sail was most efficient. Sloops are not big enough to carry several years’ worth of sea rations, so they were most often lateen or Bermuda rigged because it was most efficient for the shorter, more coastal voyages that they most often took. Edit: Sea of Thieves is a fictional story which takes place in a chain of Caribbean-esque islands and employs a very specific narrative style. So the use of square rigging - although not necessarily practical for that area - is a creative design choice. Technically it’s not incorrect or inaccurate. But the reasons for why are not discussed at all in this video. I’d be more likely to like your videos if they delved into this information a bit further.
