The Sly Cooper Khopesh - How Practical Is It?

A pole khopesh with mace pommel? Thief's cane? Sickle sword on a stick? Quite an interesting design... So here is my first impression of it.
Won't be able to test it for at least a few months, possibly longer. But I figured I might as well talk about the design features the way I interpret them currently. Pretty cool weapon, although it has one rather dangerous issue...

Eeeeee! This was a great surprise to come home from work to! It looks amazing! Thanks again to you and quinn for picking and making this! And I understand that time and places are hard to find for cutting tests. I'm really glad it turned out good, I didn't really know how the balance and handling would be on the design when it was made cause I'm no smith. Also idk why but I was worried the moment you had got it that it would wind up causing some problem, glad it was only a minor cut.

It's more angular in the cutscenes but more C-like ingame. The devs said it was originally inspired by a question mark.

I have never wanted a blade more in my entire life. Sly Cooper carries it about at the middle in his right hand throughout his games, save for when he is climbing, then he carries it in his teeth.

Even as a kid I always thought the hook was too sharply curved to be used in the way it is in the game. Hooking onto things, fair enough. The gap is narrow, but with some precision I could see it. But swinging around once you've done so? That'd require some roundness on the inside, and you have the exact opposite of that. And unhooking it seems like it would require a whooole lot of finesse, and it would likely kill your momentum. Of course, it's either that or have a less striking and iconic silhouette for your design, so they clearly made the right choice. As for carrying it, just do what Sly does and _never let it go._

You know what really be cool... ratchet’s wretch from ratchet and clank, I know it would be probably be a used primarily as a club, and in game it is used as a club but also as a normal wrench, grab things and it has a electric chain like thing that connects to his wrench head to the hilt to grab stuff from further away and to screw an screw. However I would love it! Even it would be a simple club and looks like a wrench I would LOVE IT!

We could use a rated M/18+ Sly Cooper. Worked for Samurai Jack, Turtles, Batman, etc. Add option to turn off blood and maybe more to solve issues for kids 😂 but foreal Idk if it would be bad at all to have a more mature tone. However now that I think about it, it already is pretty badass. Just no cursing and blood. There's already violence and dark tones. Man I love Sly 2/3. I only ever wanted to play as the bad guys more. Like how they weren't defeated but won over. Idk if you've watched Mob Psycho, but I love the idea of winning the bad guy over. It worked with Panda King and Dimitri! A character can be both "good" and cool. I at least personally would enjoy Bentley having more badassery to him. Like how he can get angry when he needs to. And Murray too.

Nah, that's sly's Norse ancestor's weapon. Well, that's what comes to mind when I was watching the video. It still has that cooper 'C' shape in the weapon though it's honestly shaped like a hybrid between a khopesh, a mace, and a battle-axe. All-around a weapon you don't want to mess with, also I could see the barb being used to disembowel an opponent if the "hook" is facing down. The barb would hook around an intestine and would be pulled out with the blade. While the mace pommel could be used to finish off the opponent while they are reeling from the fact that their intestines have been pulled/ripped out. Also when used on the neck there's a good chance that the barb could sever the spinal cord or lacerate either the carotid artery or the jugular vein causing the target to lose blood at a fatal rate.

Nail catch would get in a way when handling this weapon. Skall basically uses the entire length, unlike you do with bows.

I feel like this weapon, as a rough draft, is a cool idea, but it needs some improvements. The "Hook" needs to be reshaped for it to be more structurally sound. The hook looks like it could break really easily if caught on something.

As a weapon I always saw the cane as a blunt object with sharp edges, it makes a distinct thwack (literally sometimes) when you hit enemies. Of course that was probably just Sucker Punch trying to downplay the implications of a cutting weapon in a kids rated game. Anyway i feel like this thing is a mobility tool first and a weapon second, so it should feel like it could support your weight and a sturdier hook would imply that.

I think it could stand to be a bit longer. Sly's Cane is actually almost quaterstaff length when compaired to his body. Also worth noting, The Cooper Family uses exclusivly non leathal designs for their signature hook weapons

@@commanderblargh6300 Gameplay mechanics. Not lore. Lore wise Sly gets in and out unnoticed and has a showdown with what ever criminal he's robbing. Then Carmaletta busts in, a day late and a dollar short no less, and arrests everyone while Sly and the gang make their big get away.

Exactly what I thought. This was really good for a first attempt. The second one would presumably have different blade so it can be safely gripped and more rounded inside angle so the hook can carry more load without breaking.

Yeah, I think a bit of length would solve a majority of issues of the idea. I think that blade style and a mace butt are kinda a perfect formula for a good polearm. It's a series of good ideas that kinda clash but aaaaalmost work.

@@veraducks I assume you are saying that because you can't use much more reach than that efficiently with a pole-club so that would put the blade well behind one's body. I feel like if it was just a simple spear tip or maybe a boar-spear for the additional flexibility but more chance of gettng caught, it would probably be more efficient.

It actually looks like an elegant and useful weapon, really... Perhaps if the blade were a touch more heavily reinforced and slightly more thicc. Handle length looks to be perfect, assuming balance is centered. Lots of potential here...

@@bryanthardin8481 You've got a hook, a blade, a staff, and a bludgeon. Sort of a giant multitool. Assuming it doesn't get in it's own way, and is sturdy enough, there is probably a lot that can be accomplished with this weapon. Maybe some refinement is needed here or there... but imagine training for years on this weapon alone. I can see it being very formidable in the right hands.

@@BeingFireRetardant that is true. Maybe with more length and more weight on either side, it can pretty much pass as a polearm. Though if you don't want to lose this you need to increase the hooks length to make sure you don't losr your weapon inside of someone

This isn’t Sly’s cane for the record this appears to be based on the weapon of one of his ancestors from Thieves in Time, Salim al-Kupar of ancient Arabia.

In fairness, Sly is just one in a long family history of thieves that range from Ninjas to Pirates... a Cooper probably had a bladed cane at some point in their family history.

In the Sly series alone there are alot of very interesting cane designs that are held by Sly's ancestors.

This would make a great thrusting weapon for a movie. Like just imagine like a troll or something brutally murdering some warrior in the middle of a fight scene by hooking and tearing out his rib! That would be an EPIC shot

When you're able to, it would be cool to see you try to adapt some techniques for this weapon in a fight (try hooking and thrusting or really get into the unique features of this blade and its size)

Yeah, it's a cane that seems pretty narrow from the actual cutscenes we get, and it's clearly not MEANT for combat. Even in combat he basically just uses it to bash on people like it's a baseball bat.

some of the ancestors in the later game(s?) did use it in a bladed form, on a sword handle mind but yeah, sly's i think is meant to be about as sharp as a nail(at least one pointy bit but nothing else)

I'd 100% say either make it quarter-staff length, or ditch the hook entirely. Every time you go for a pommel strike I wince from how close that hook comes to jabbing you.

akshually... Sly's weapon is not a Khopesh and never handled as such in the games... it's always just regarded as a blunt, concussion causing staff. Though a Khopesh interpretation... well, interesting, I guess. Edit: also, Footage from Sly 4? Booo!!! Effin Sanzaru ended that came with a effin Cliffhanger and no intention of resolving it... and a dumb heelturn of a formerly heroic character... until somebody decides to fix that mess, the Series ends with 3 for me! :D

@@supremecaffeine2633 That would be Slytunkhamen Cooper I, and pretty much his and his son Slytunkhamen Cooper II used two of them as duel wielding..but they were MUCH shorter in the grip department than Sly's cane..so..a lot different than this thing. Cool idea though I'll give it that..not the most safe for swinging around the mace end though.

To be fair, this weapon/design isnt actually bad. Its not ridiculous but it stylish ; Its strong, but not too heavy. This one definitely gets a pass compared to some other crazy shennanigans.

one good way to use the mace would be to "backswing" the hook into an enemies sword to "push/drag" it out of alignment while you step in and butt stroke them good and hard with the mace end , which could leave them open for a nasty hack at the neck/face as you come back into position

I was really surprised when I saw this in the original video because I designed something almost identical for my fantasy world. I was going to scrap it because I don’t know anything about proper weapon design apart from bits and pieces I’ve learned from you and Shad’s videos, but when I saw that I put it back in haha. The main difference is mine is made of bronze, doesn’t have the mace on the end, the haft is a bit longer, and the blade is more faithful to the shape of a khopesh with a hook that’s a little wider than this one

I have always seen Sly's cane as a blade since the edges look angled in the artwork. In the 2016 movie trailer, sparks fly from the cane as he slides down a building while leaving marks so that confirmed it for me. Being a fan for almost a decade, it really thrills my heart to see this weapon come to life.
