Most captive Orcas (and those born in captivity) in the US came from Southern Resident Orca Pods, which is why they are fed fish. The SRKW pods were decimated in the 70s when live captures were at their peak. Each pod has its own unique culture & language. This beautiful, intelligent creature should be released back to the wild or sent to an open water sanctuary. It is _beyond_ sad to see them held prisoners when you live near the sea they were stolen from and have seen them in the wild on numerous occasions (for free!). Thank the goddesses live capture is now illegal here. But someone needs to make Russia stop stealing baby Orca & Beluga whales from arctic waters near Norway & Iceland.

Unfortunately, if that irca has been raised in captivity, he or she would die in the wild, not thrive. It is important to know the whole story. We dont know if the irca was maybe rescued as a baby or has a deformity that would affect its life in the wild. Let hope that was the case and it was stolen from its pod because that would be awful. That is what seaworld was doing back in the day, apparently, which is so wrong. But I think we can all agree that the owner was a very poor choice of words. Nobody should own any living being.
@alshee3564 ай бұрын
@savvylinn I wouldn't doubt that many years ago they may had been captured. But now days all captive animals are either rescues or offspring from other captives. You could argue against captive breeding of non endangered species.but there are many many things to consider when looking into the ethics of it. America is also a little behind other western countries in animal welfare legislations but most captive facilities still do great work.

@@savvylinnfr
@dandyvods4 ай бұрын
@@alshee356 This is not true. While wild captures may have died down in the US/western countries, out in ASIA and russia they still occur. China has been having a boom in construction of sea parks much like Seaworld, and they have been purchasing Orcas from Russia's recent wild captures. The capturing of orcas and cetaceans was halted in 2019 after 97 Belugas and orca whales were found in holding tanks. Those animals were then traded to china. There are about 15 captive orcas across China right now and despite protests, the government continues to open parks like this. I'm assuming the orca in this video is from one of those chinese parks. Also @savvylinn - very rarely have orcas that were rescued been caught and kept in captivity. If I remember correctly the only known instance of this was Morgan because she was found to be (partially?) deaf. Otherwise, all orcas are typically either wild caught or captive bred. Most if not all in asian countries as of right now are wild caught.

Косатки должны жить на воле!!! Это очень интеллектуально развитые животные. Они достойны того, чтобы мы уважали их!
Reminder: Some animals are in captivity because they can't or won't survive in the wild. Also zoos and sanctuaries exist to help spread awareness about how we as humans can help save species from extinction. Breeding programs at zoos help to increase the population of critically endangered species. Take the ABQ Biopark for example, we have a breeding pair in a conservation program for Mexican Grey Wolves and have contributed over 30 wild individuals that have increased the population by 13.2%. That may not seem significant but it is very significant. So before you activists go saying that zoos are evil, think about the conservation efforts they strive for.

Yep. We may find out in a decade or 2 that sperm whales and orcas are smarter than humans. There are some very interesting experiments being worked on today that I'd recommended looking into. Including the sperm whale Rosetta Stone. There is a lot of evidence that sperm whales are more intelligent than humans. The vast majority of humans are ignorant and biased towards their own species. I don't blame us too much. Or maybe I don't blame us enough. I am also human with biases towards our own. Waterlocked species can't create fire or technology. That doesn't mean they can't be more intelligent. Humans are still a very primitive species with much to learn. What an exciting time to live in.

Sigh.... ice is NOT a snack for them. It's a required part of their diet when they're in captivity because the water isn't cold enough for their bodies to regulate temperature properly.
@kalavakus49824 ай бұрын
if the environment wasn’t cold enough, the orca would probably be dead already, as someone who once took a dip in the water in a place like this, it is absolutely freezing. whales receive hydration and water from the prey they consume in the wild, fish that are fed to captive animals are frozen and thawed which leads to them losing a LOT of their natural fluids. contrary to popular belief a lot of fish don’t drink salt water, because in the end the salt concentration can damage their organs (much like our own), meaning when they eat they effectively drink as well. because the thawed fish lose a lot of their hydrating liquids, ice or gelatin is used to help combat dehydration. the sensation of ice is also stimulating to beluga whales and orcas, so yes it is a fun snack, and it keeps them in good health. while i dont advocate for the captivity of large animals like this handsome lad, often times its because they are born with a defect that prevents them from living in the wild, so they’re often in better hands in these places, most of the time at least. seeing as it’s dorsal fin hasn’t collapsed it’s clearly well hydrated, and seeing how sociable it is with it’s trainer, it’s in good spirits.

Could be this, but they also need the ice to hydrate. They don't drink so in the wild they hydrate through the water that's in the body of their food. But in captivity their fish don't have enough water as they're dried when shipping, so they get fed ice cubs
@jimmyq87363 ай бұрын
Yeah they should be feeding them living fish, not dead ones that have been frozen and have lost all it's water. SEAWORLD once said that they didn't want to give them living fish because it might scare the kids. . . I think that it’s wonderful for people to be able to see wild animals at zoos or aquariums because most people would never see them otherwise. BUT the environment has to match the animal. For example the orca. People need to find a way that the orcas can be free in the wild, but can get close enough to humans to see them sometimes. Like making the area of the park that’s for the orcas be open to the ocean instead of them being stuck in a pool for their whole lives. Trainers can teach the orcas to swim from the ocean into the water park area to get snacks and play. Then whenever the orcas are done they can just swim back into the ocean. Animals should not be separated from family. If the animal shows any kind of distress or anxiety or shows a decline in health, they need to be taken back to the wild.

There is a Dolphin & porpoise sanctuary in Palau (Micronesia) that fits your description. All of the animals are rescued from fishing nets, injury or retired from marine parks. There are about 6 "pools" in the Lagoon. They built docks & walkways for the humans, but they float. So the animals can swim under and even go out to the open sea. They tend to stay in the Lagoon. They have been trained to clean leaves out of the water (so they don't accidentally eat them which can be deadly). They respond to a few hand signals & will choose to interact with humans. I got to swim with them. The owner built the sanctuary after reading how human/dolphin interactions could be healing for people with a wide range of health issues. That's why my SO took me there. I loved the fact that the animals could leave any time they wanted to. The only time the large lagoon is ever closed off is during a typhoon or tropical cyclone. Most of the animals have small geo-tag implants so they can make sure they are accounted for and safe. The Lagoon that is home to Dolphins Pacific is huge. There should be something similar for Orcas. Release them all from captivity (including Shamu!) and let them live out the rest of their days in a large lagoon off the coast of British Columbia or Iceland or Norway. Someplace where they can be protected & kept safe from harm but let them live where they belong... in the ocean. 💙
