Pikachu's character arc was phenomenal. He went from this obedient pet, a captive for all his life, then when he finally had control of the situation, he was driven mad with power, and became this unstable, untrustworthy leader who rules by fear. Luigi, a minor antagonist, seems to be the exact same. Overshadowed by his brother for his whole career, he seizes the momentary chaos to attempt to finally overcome his brother. However, delving deeper into his character, you can see the difference between the two, which reveals the major themes of the film and Pikachu: The duality of man. Pikachu is a character corrupted by those around him, turned evil by society, captured and forced to fight, which ultimately culminates and is reflected by Shadowchu, who we'll touch on in a moment. Luigi, on the other hand, is a character born corrupt and evil. His reasoning for becoming mad is purely his greed and jealousy. Shadowchu is the ultimate reflection of Pikachu's themes of being corrupted and changed by those around him, literally being a corrupted version of Pikachu, forced into being transformed by others purely out of their own self-interest and wants to survive. Before he transforms, he's power-hungry, sure, but still Pikachu. He still retains much of his old self. Shadowchu is the death of the old Pikachu and the rebirth of a new one. However, when your old self 'dies', who are you? What are you? Pikachu has by now become completely emotionless and disattached. However, by the end, he's come to realize something. He knows his old self is dead, he says it himself, and he knows that he's no longer a 'good guy' to most extent. He also realizes the only thing he has left from his old life is his friends. He sacrifices himself to end the Monkey Samurai. So that's it, right? Wrong. There's one last piece to the puzzle, a third character that fits in with Pika and Luigi. But if Pikachu is man corrupted by civilization, and Luigi is man corrupted by himself, what else is there? The antagonist himself, the 'Smash Bros Samurai', or Monkey as I'll be calling him. Monkey is the inbetween. He's not fully evil by nature, and he's not fully evil by society. He is perfectly inbetween both. He's clearly very naturally skilled with a sword and is unfazed slaughtering people, but he's not completely naturally corrupted; He's clearly a good kid deep down, just following orders. And speaking of orders, he's molded and shaped by his father whilst he's still young and impressionable, but he's not completely corrupted by those around him; He, unlike Pikachu, simply accepts that his father's word is final and he must do whatever he says. He is a lot more similar to Pikachu than to Luigi, however. Both are told what to do and forced to fight, but the key difference is that Pikachu fights back. Pikachu stands up and Pikachu becomes free, whilst Monkey does what he's told and Monkey dies a servant to his own father. Pikachu earns his freedom, but it costs him his sanity and himself entirely. And thus, the message of the smash bros. samurai is this: Find your freedom, don't obey to any authoritarian figure, however, be weary and forge your revolution not with blood, but with peace.

Shadowchu seems a little unstable. Or maybe... he just leveled up and learned Selfdestruct.
