I don't agree with you at all. As a multi instrumentalist I say this song is about perfect. One thing that you learn over the years is that less is more. The vocalist gets more space to tell his story. There is zo much going on instrumentaly. It's starting of with a few simpel strummed chords . A simple drum part, a simple baseline. The fine nuances and articulations of Johnny Marr later on the song, the more complex drumparts, the more interesting baselines....it grows with every minute. Sometimes they take it back for a while. It's like a depression. Sometimes it's more, sometimes it's less. It all resolves in peak of itensity and then they they take it back till the end. If you like the sound of Morrisey or not is subjective. His singing is getting intenser as the song develops in a emotional way not many singers can do. Analyze the whole structure with very good monitor speakers/headphones. You here details you don't hear with consumer grade audio products.

Also, @Marco Hermans, are you purchasing speakers or headphones for people? Not everyone can afford professional level audio products, and even with my KRK monitors, I like to EQ them for casual music listening. Flat EQ listening sounds like absolute shit to my ears. Everyone has different ears.

@@eboethrasher, it's all about the structure of the song which i described above. It's all about personal preference. This song is brilliant in its own kind. As a musician you look and listen in a different way to music. Chords, chord changes, timbre, voicings, rhythm, rest, etc. It's like a landscape. A dessert can be beautiful, a jungle too. Krk monitors are oke for listening and mixing. EQ settings are personal. I don't like a lot of eq but that's me. I like good audio equipment because it enhances my way of being part of it. I still like this song listening in my car with crappy speakers.

@@marcohermans3207 I really enjoyed Marco's review of my favourite 80s band. Good to hear someone with a erring viewpoint on one of my personal classics. But I do think the instrumentation and the lyrics blend majestically. The refrain Marr plays whilst Morrissey sings, "If you're so funny, why do you sleep alone tonight?", is like the slow dancing region of the night in an American high school dance. I've never heard the slow dance vibe better than that refrain section of this song. The Beatles wrote certain songs like this one and 'I know it's Over' tops them all. You know, 'You've got to hide your Love Away' and 'Girl". The Smiths tops those absolutely amazing songs with this one. Blow me away.

This is probably The Smiths most depressing song. Try an upbeat track like This Charming Man, William It Was Really Nothing, I Want The One I Can't Have. The Smiths are definitley a grower. Everybody I know doesn't like them that much at first but they kept coming back and a month a later they had heard all their discography and love them.

This song is not for everyone, it is only for those who have had platonic loves, musically it is perfect and the lyrics are also perfect, as I say it will only hit you if you lived something similar to the song, morrisey is a genius, a pity that the smiths parted

One of the least interesting songs by The Smiths musically. I love everything they've ever done. You get the jest of Morrissey's lyrics, but Johnny Marr, my favorite guitarist, doesn't do his typical layering here, which makes him and The Smiths so great. Check out "Some Girls are Bigger Than Others" or "Girl Afaid" for magnificent guitar layering imo.

I say hear and not necessarily react to it because I don't want to be adding songs to your already long list 😬 it's fine if you just check it out for your ears only! it's rare that a cover strucks as much if not more than the original version!

@@bridgetandstafford I have to disagree. Vocally, Buckley is simply far superior than Morrissey and even though it is not his song originally he has managed to make it his own in that cover.

Having now listened to both versions I like both vocalists for what it's worth. Morrissey has grown on me and I love his seemingly effortless, depressing, crooner style. On the other hand Buckley just has this haunting voice that to me is more vocally proficient. Both artists do a killer job though!

I definitely thought this song was drab when I first heard it. It's so delicate that the lyrics have to enter you before you realise the brilliance of the instrumentation. No surprise that people don't fall over themselves on a first listen.
