Everyone likes The Smiths because it's super impressive that Morrissey, clearly a deaf man, can approximate singing, right? Also, guess what, it ain't just Morrissey. This entire band is the worst.
Are The Smiths influential?
Sure.
Are any of the bands they influenced good, like, even a little bit?
Absolutely not.
Go back in time, make The Smiths not happen and everything that later instantly gets 10% better. Duran Duran were a better band and it's not even close. Get ready to get sad about how much The Smiths suck.

You guys mentioned Brand New in this episode and I just wanted to say that I need an episode about Brand New in my life. They've released five albums in 20 years and one of those albums was mostly composed of Jesse Lacey screaming at the top of his lungs into a microphone. Or how about that feud between with Taking Back Sunday where they were writing emo songs back and forth telling each other what horrible people they are? Or the quote from Garrett Tierney where he said something along the lines of "Music piracy is the equivalent of a shotgun wedding and the artist is the bride." For the record, I actually do like Brand New but I also like this podcast.

I like this podcast a lot... these guys are super funny, well spoken, and really insightful/ know their history. And I happen to like a lot of the bands they trash on. That being said I checked out the bands referenced as being better than the smiths for this particular episode and found them to be devoid of emotion and lyrical depth... which seems to be a big criticism about music from these guys, like the more emotive a band is the cornier they are... idk but to me, and I assume many others, is the very point of a lot of music. I'm curious as to know what these guys value when listening to music they enjoy or consider better than the "shit" they review on this show. A lot of their criticisms also seem lie in a band being influenced by another band or another piece of art as if every piece of art must be absolutely original, no questions asked, which is not how any media of entertainment works, and I'd argue if am artist claimed to be 100 percent original these two would bash them to pieces for doing so. I do also agree when they criticize artists for being "too much their image" which is def a flaw many bands are guilty of but not every fan is a spitting image of the flaws of their favorite artist nor do they wholly care.

Point of reference on why the “other three” (Joyce, Rourke and Marr) didn’t go on to massive success after they broke up, like Joy Division, is because Johnny Marr; and not Morrissey, walked out. Therefore, it is impossible for “the other three” to have gone on to have massive success after the band broke up.

@@jackkitchen154 , trust me, I’ve done research. Read my post closely. The video says the “other three” (those remaining in the band after the loss of the 4th member) and makes a direct reference to Joy Division. The point is, Marr was not a part of the remaining members. He left the band first. He broke up the Smiths. So, any reference to Marr as being a part of the other three - especially in the offered context of Joy Division and New Order - is historically inaccurate.

Marr may not be a great or even good guitarist, but he's not a bad one by any means. He is about average I'd say, which is still a compliment cos average players can still play fairly well and sometimes put out good stuff. I'm judging this also on his later works and collaborations, perhaps moreso even. I’m a big fan of The Cribs and some of his guitaring on their 4th album (Ignore The Ignorant) was good (especially City of Bugs)

Johnny Marr is one of the best guitarists of the 80s. If you listen to the riffs and breaking down his part you'll realise he's a fucking genius. Like anyone who knows the first thing about guitar can see Johnny Marr is a GOAT. Calling him average is just wrong and an insult

It's so funny.. and ironic listening to millennials trashing bands of eighties...I went to Smiths concert in Detroit, I saw Sinead O'Connor's first gig in the States...with the Smiths rhythmic behind her...We were crazy about about Morrissey's poetic gloom, Sinead's anger...But we would never Mosley&Coe them...Why don't you get on your sample/on/sample/on/sample shit of muzak you IV-ed to? Leave our heroes alone...Go digital.

I get what you mean by no one naturally being as bad of a singer as Morrissey. I put an isolated vocal in a pitch reader, he almost never hit the note he ways clearly trying for, and rarely when above E4 or below C4. Even elvis costello, a truly terrible singer, hit a note ever once in a while.

Thank you for doing this one i've always thought they were completely miserable mainly because of Morrissey. Even back in their heyday I thought that they were garbage. Musically like a British version of REM but even wimpier, and burdened with a moping misanthrope of a singer to the point of caricature. I'd much rather listen to early Monochrome or some Felt (when they had their great guitarist) or House of Love than anything the Smiths ever did.

There's this disconnect going on in this band between Morrissey's grand woke lyrics and the music the band is making. Or vice versa. Morrissey is doing his own thing, and the band is doing its own thing. It's not congruent. Maybe that's the point of this band. Musically they remind me of 10,000 Maniacs, but with a singer that's not on the same page as the rest of the band.

@wayward_wyn no because that’s like 40s and 50s music so basically doo wap is grandpa music. I heard Big Mouth Strikes Again on FM radio 10 years ago (some semi-eclectic syndicated show hosted by this old guy) and I was excited to hear more of these "Smiths" guys. Well, fucking nothing else by them sounds anything like that song. That song is catchy pop with a pretty sunny vibe. How Soon Is Now is a lot more like the rest of their tuneless dirges than Big Mouth Strikes Again. Girl in a Coma's singer sounds a lot like Morrissey at times, probably by force, but she gets a pass because she might be the sexiest woman in the history of music. (Although tbh I think MOrrissey is pretty great looking, no homo.)
