Researchers led by Motoyasu Tanaka at the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo have developed a snake-shaped robot that can climb up high steps, navigate through narrow spaces and even give a leg massage. The 1.7-metre (5.5-foot)-long “snake” has 17 joints equipped with distance sensors that “detect whether each wheel is on a step or hanging in the air”, Tanaka said. He aims to put the device to use in three years, after further research to improve the robot’s recoverability from adverse conditions during disaster rescue missions.

This will be game changer and help so many people get the help they may need so much faster

I imagine, giving the wheels little needlely spikes would help prevent friction loss when the robot is traversing more slick terrain. Only problem is, it would no longer be able to give you a comfortable massage

The most crucial improvement is speed, if that robot could move a bit more speedy it will greatly help the emergency

Makes me wonder if this robot is “Customizable” which should be in case of different disaster scenarios

Remember to analyse carefully, the Keyword is 'could' which means theres a high possibility it's only for-show

Imagine the initial terror though of being trapped in a cave somewhere and a glowing snake creature comes crawling towards you.

Bro, put gps, visual & audio capabilities to the snake for it to locate earthquake victims.Maybe another type of snake to bring water tube to the victims( atach very long & tiny water tube to it tail). Maybe with batery driven & remote controller.

Once they use that on a full scale building, the people trapped inside are already ☠️

Thats not gonna work in a collapsed building. That magnetic slime robot from china would be ideal if it could have a nano camera

I seen something on discovery like 15 years ago extremely similar. Except the moving parts were covered in some kind of fabrics. Maybe they outsourced the work on them to Japan/China.
