Good times for sure. My dad was a Piper dealer back in the 60s and the 70s. I started going with him to the Piper factory in Vero Beach Florida and bring back a half dozen Cherokees at a time. My dad always flew the Cherokee 6s. My first trip back to Spokane Washington I was in 4th grade and I sat on my suitcase the whole way so I could see over the dash. I got thousands of air miles sitting right seat bringing new Piper's back home. Even got to fly home with a new Aztec from Pennsylvania once. Great fun for a young kid. 😎

I clicked on the video because my family used to fly our comanche to Big Bear to go skiing for a few hours and then hop back in the plane and fly home. Watching the video left me with a stream of happy tears seeing you and your daughter together. My dad passed away when I was in my late 20s and I don't think I even realized, until watching this video, how much I miss flying around with him, as I was not the biggest fan of the plane at the time! Thank you for sharing this with us!

My instructor and I went up there a few years ago with a very small amount of snow on the ground in a C-182P. It was so cool to fly over the lake and drop down the canyon and passing the ski resort with all the chair lifts at the same level. The haze in the basin is such a bummer to have to deal with.

I love seeing Big Bear landing and takeoff from the air! 1960s-1970s my parents had a cabin in Big Bear, ahead and to the right when you were landing and taking off. Sometimes we'd go to the park just east of the airport, where we could watch as the little planes came bouncing in to land.

Nice videos. A quick ForeFlight tip... after setting your destination in your flight plan page under the edit tab, you can select "procedure" to the right. Next select "traffic pattern", select your runway, type of pattern entry and select "add to route." It creates a nice overlay of the traffic pattern which keeps me from getting to tight or wide at new places. What's nice is ForeFlight knows the direction of pattern for each airfield and it prevents from having to make an arbitrary 45 to downwind waypoint like I saw in your video at 5:30. I use this function all the time at unfamiliar airfields. You may not find this function useful since you have that nice Dynon setup.
@SoCalFlyingMonkey
@SoCalFlyingMonkey 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I always forget to use that feature in Foreflight! I think I would be able to send the plan including the traffic pattern waypoints to the Avidyne IFD which passes along to the Dynon. I’ll try it next flight!

Fun to see my "backyard" from a different viewpoint. Autopilot is really something else. I once had the privilege of flying in the cockpit of a 737 for the last 40 minutes of a flight. I was astonished how the pilot just sat there basically looking out the window. Even when he took over the controls, he just turned a switch on the dashboard to drop altitude. Only time I ever saw him have his hands on the controls were the last 5 minutes for the landing. Someday soon I guess pilots will be a thing of the past I guess?

For sure! I took a mountain flying course and we went there in the summer and loaded up as heavy as possible in my Pa28-180 with 2 of us full fuel and some weight in the back to learn about high DA ops. Learned a lot from a very experienced CFI those 2 days...got to respect the mountains and DA
