Hey Thornheels, An arabic fan here The game wasn't actually Localized in the middle east, the arabic version you're mentioning is actually Hack Patch install made by enginears who happen to be collectors of Captain tsubasa (Kaptain Majid in arabic) games and figures, Even many shop owners back then Resold it as official version despite being false, it was one few games that many people could play of the series outside figuring out how japanese games suppose to work before internet was as acessable to everyone hehe. Hope this was insightful

There were even like these small tea biscuit packets with the "Kaptain Majid" brand, I kid you not, like I don't even think- hell, I'm sure that these weren't even legal, which kinda reflects the other illegal branding Arabic businesses exploit (real e.g:There's a terrible music video about an Arabian man dressed in a Spongebob suit that mostly shouted the lyric 'Ana Spongebob!') and mind you they probably aren't anything big, but it's there. Fun fact, if you can call it that.

Captain Tsubasa was very popular here in Brazil when i was younger, i watched some of it but i was mostly into Saint Seiya hehehe but damn the art in this game is spot on! Very impressive, kinda like a Arc System game! Truly got the art style of Yoichi Takahashi.

Have you played Inazuma Eleven? It's a football JRPG made by Level-5, the guys behind Dark Cloud, Dragon Quest VIII/XI, Professor Layton, and Ni No Kuni just to name a few. There are 3 on the DS and a 4th is slated for 2023. It's seriously my favorite football RPG by far.

To say it is the fourth game is heavily inaccurate. The GO games aren't really spinoffs. That is pretty much where the series ended. And the reboot is as good as dead. The ill fated Ares was supposed to be a reboot but due to Hino's massive hubris it got delayed so many times it delayed itself into quiet cancellation (all mention of Ares in official sites is pretty much scrubbed, and Hino insists the game replacing it is entirely different and it is). It really is a shame Ares got cancelled. The amount of delays caused investors to lose faith in the project and the second season's anime episode count got slashed in half. This wouldn't be much of an issue except Hino himself would later go on to say that he has no idea how to market the new game replacing Ares because there is no multimedia project hook now that the anime is dead in the water. Great Road is also seemingly ditching the RPG gameplay for more of a sim approach which is simply strange. It seems to be set in the reboot universe but also has characters from GO who create continuity issues (for example Gouenji never went to Okinawa in the reboot so one of the characters would have never come in contact with soccer) I have no idea what Level5 and Hino are planning anymore. I don't see the game coming out. They can't even say what the gameplay is without using 20 conflicting buzzwords.

I'm from Brazil, soccer here is almost a religion and disliking it is a crime, I honestly can't take two steps without seeing something related to soccer, therefore I always hated it, but still loved Inazuma Eleven and my father grew watching Tsubasa, this is so much better than real soccer, the dumb looking anime characters actually like playing the dumb soccer game, instead of the real players who look bored and dead inside.

I once rented a SNES soccer game that had unique players and if I remember correctly you could get into brawls during the game . Was still a soccer game underneath but with some spice.. never remember or seen the game since. Was a joy of a weekend though

Reminds me of the _Space Battleship Yamato_ rehash a few years back. Made using modern techniques, but with the original late 70s character and mecha designs. Made for a very unique aesthetic for a mid-2010s anime.

That was a really good video. I've had my eye on this game for a bit to get my football RPG kick, and I'll definitely pick it up sometime (when its not 60 euroes). If you want to play the only other football RPG in existance, I highly reccomend checking the Inazuma Eleven series on the DS. It's much more on the RPG side than Tusbasa seems to be, with a top down camera point that you direct all the players at once with, turn based-esque interactions between you and the enemy team, and outside of the football battles and very wholesome sports-shonen anime storyline, theres an overworld to explore and a deep pokemon style scouting system to build a team out of any characters you find throughout the game. I'm just bringing it up cause it's a series I played growing up and since you introduced me to Tsubasa now, I'd like to return the favor by telling you about this. Plus, the series only really took off in Japan and Europe, so it's pretty niche.

Captain Tsubasa Vol. II: Super Striker (1990) on Famicom is the hypest RPG on the system. Awesome ost and exhilarating, cinematic presentation (and storytelling), not only between but During gameplay-sections; exactly what one would expect from Tecmo (all of this being at the triple-A height of Famicom's limits). Simply imagine them making an RPG with their NES-era Ninja Gaiden-presentation, -style of music and -energy. Insofar as Blitzball was trying to be an homage to Tsubasa-series it missed the point.

I'm surprised you actually played it. I'm a big fan of the anime so when this game was released I of course had to get it. The reason some cutscenes were so long, specially in the latter half of the game was because they were covering story not showcased in the anime (the arcs after the middle school competition tend to rarely get animated). Sadly this might be the only continuation to the story we will get with this remake (a shame because I quite loved it). The game really makes you feel like you are part of the team and get to play with your favorite team or against them. Whenever certain plays or scenes from the anime are triggered there is this nostalgic rush. The online aspect though really sucked though. It was buggy and laggy at times, and the difference in skills between players made the experience quite annoying. I remember feeling like I was quite good at the game to noticing just how much I sucked at it. Over all though I quite loved my experience with the game. It's really fun to play, and has a lot to offer to fans of the anime (in terms of references and fan service).

As a brazilian i was raised with football as the major entertainment for the masses, the kids love it, the adults love it and the elderly also love it. It's the major talk of the country as a whole. What about me? well i despise it. not the sport itself but the culture behind. Gotta thank my dad for never imposing it on me. The digital version of the sport makes it less sense to me, why would anyone one play fifa? it's reality! i can't play it to save my life but a match of mario strikers? bring it on! This tsubasa game can be my cup of tea cuz there is roleplay involved, something like when i play ridge racer, 7 is a great arcade racer but R4 is my favorite cuz the grand prix mode has characters with storylines and personalities and that's the charm of the experience. i know modern fifa has like career modes, but if my character cannot learn flame dragon kick what's the point?

Captain Tsubasa was extremely popular here in Spain and i guess in some LATAM countries. here it was known as Oliver y Benji (localized names for Tsubasa and the rival goalie) and by popular i mean it was on air for a lot of years and we ended up getting here a lot of merch like trading cards, figures, ... Same as Doraemon, another not so popular series in the usa that is very popular here. on another topic, as someone who doesnt really like football/soccer very much, i find the arcade style of games like international superstar soccer 64 very enjoyable to play if someone is iterested and doesnt care much about the sport itself.

I guarantee you Captain Tsubasa is very popular in most Asia countries too, especially during late 90s or early 2000s. The anime/games version that have Japan & Korea World Cup 2002 simply a masterpiece imo LOL I think even Konami made a special PES (or Winning Eleven) with Captain Tsubasa at one point.

Pro Evolution Soccer 5 has an RPG campaign mode. You make your own team and your own players, and you then participate in leagues and try and advance while leveling up your players. It's not a terrible experience and tiny Randalf who was also Euro that hated the footy still enjoyed it

Yay I get to be another commenter talking about Inazuma Eleven lmao. My brother and I grew up loving the anime and got a chance to try some of the game when they came to DS and 3DS in Australia. When I saw this game in a Direct, I instantly thought of IE and all my memories with that series. It's great, and I think it does some of the things you mention like exploration a lot better.

I happen to have finished that Captain Tsubasa PS2 game. Lemme tell ya, it looks really cool but it's a freaking nightmare to play. One of those "Mom I broke my controller by the way of painful button mashing" kind of games, just like the PS2 Saint Seiya fighting games would occasionally make your left analog stick hella wobbly if you played it too much. So basically this game is a more polished yet realistic Fifa Street cosplaying as a Square Enix game. Thats actually kinda cool and would love to see this approach in American sports game's season modes. Either that or Tamsoft should make an Eyeshield 21 or Kuroko no basket version game.

If you want a futball game that's even more anime and even more RPG, I recommend looking into the Inazuma Eleven series. I woulda liked an entry in this game's style, but Level-5 got tired of us not buying their games and quit localizing them, plus the series itself broke apart in the middle of the 3DS.

I know you probably won't be interested in yet another football game so close after Captain Tsubasa, but the Inazuma Eleven games check a lot of the boxes you mentioned as it's a JRPG with story and exploration and stuff as well as battles (random encounters too) being all done via the football "combat system". It also has those moments where on team is hyped the fuck up in the beginning and then you finally get to fight it for realsies later in the game after you've become a good team yourself. Shit's good for what it is (also I'm mostly talking about the first Inazuma Eleven game as that's the only one I've played to completion but they're all like that). Keep in mind that it is on the DS and you need to use the DS stylus to control things which can be off putting for some

pretty sure that Super Campeões/capitain tsubasa style of futebol is more combate oriented than a lot of combat rpgs, hell, they even have hadoukens and shit

I'm still shocked Captain Tsubasa got a new game at all, because I hadn't heard of it since the 90's, when it had a PSX title that I saw while browsing for ROMs to download. Edit: P.S., taking the time to sell out for my favorite crazy soccer/futbol game, Mario Strikers Charged, on the Wii. Smaller stadiums than what you get here, but the tighter spaces are accompanied by 4-v-4 team matchups that can get tense and fun with the different players' abilities. Music's bitchin', too.

Thanks, this inspired me to pick up a copy of Tsubasa. I REALLY encourage you to play through Guardian's Crusade when you get the chance. It seema basic but the Baby mechanics are unique, the writing is incredibly charming and the ending is surprisingly moving. God bless Tamsoft for such unique experiences...

Well, this anime is a religion here in Latin america, we got it as "super campeones" and everyone watched it even my grandma knows about it and I'm a 32 old fart. So yeah, this game was a sure buy for me even if it was shit, thankfully this one is awesome!
