Social media are influencing the way women feel about their own bodies. Young women in particular are constantly being confronted with pictures of beautiful female bodies online - images which have almost always been digitally enhanced.
This documentary take a long and alarming look at young women whose everyday lives are dictated by the search for bodily perfection. The more users click their way through Instagram, Facebook and so on, the greater their dissatisfaction with their own appearance becomes. Hardly anyone can escape the pull of this illusory world, where beauty, fitness and lifestyle count for everything. The consequences an even be fatal: slimming and fitness crazes, eating disorders of all kinds, body shaming and sexism. During her research, filmmaker Jennifer Rezny came across a Canadian study that found that young women’s insecurity has been increased by social media. It feels like almost everyone is trying to present themselves on Instagram in slick filter-processed selfies these days. Despite increasing calls for diversity, the "ideal” female body still dominates the media's perception of female beauty. Numerous movements and initiatives - even on the part of the fashion and advertising industries themselves - have had little effect. "The female body has always been a carrier of female identity. It's nothing new for us women to be objectified and sexualised,” says Rezny. "There has also been a great deal of social development, but we are still not where we should be and where we women want to be, in an equal society. And in any case, we live in a meritocratic society, one defined and colored by capitalism, which always has to be optimized and improved. It can never be enough.”

@@venlapallari9484 You want to talk about "traditional cultural norms", specifically in western society? Let's talk about the idea that women have certain expectations of men, and certain standards men need to meet in order for women to deem them acceptable, tall, handsome, fit, high paying career, fancy car etc. And there is certainly no harm in women setting standards. But when men have certain expectations and set specific standards for they want in a woman, slim, fit, pretty, sexy, easy to get along with etc.,, out come the cries of "Misogyny!" and "Sexism!" and the "You should accept a woman as she is and at any size because all women are beautiful!" and other such foolishness. Following "body positive", plus size, and fitness models are the same problem as following thinspo. You are still putting all your mental energy and self-value into your BODY. Don't put your self-value in your body. Period. You have a body, it doesn't matter how it looks. Be balanced, healthy, and enjoy what you love. If you love fitness and it's your job or whatever, then fine. But don't do it to LOOK good, do it because you love it. Don't put all your self-worth into your body is what I think the solution is.

I agree to an extent, but I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to look good. It is when things become an obsession and damage your mental health that it becomes a problem. That can happen with anything though not just body image. If you think of your self as very scholarly you can put all your self-worth into your grades and your degree, which can lead to just as many problems with stress or perhaps turning to stimulant drugs to study more. The solution is not to stop trying to get good grades or to stop trying to look good it is to have a balanced, healthy life with a reasonable outlook and to love yourself regardless of the results.

Well said and true, but also the inverse is true as well, because social media now sets the tracking of "cultural/social capital", which is required for creating opportunity in the "capital" capital worlds of many industries. Social media has flattened things like Hollywood and made youtube and tiktok the platforms for being free agents of content creation and distribution. going from 0 to 1 to launch your brand or company has never been easier. whatever the negatives, we can't let that sink the entire ship.

i like this a lot, and I think its the same with many other societal issues like ra*ism and LGBT too! In their attempt to change and improve bad norms, people jump from one extreme to the other, I think the key would be: Neutrality, equality, take the focus away on our difference or ideals. I think it would just be a wonderful world if people could just stop caring about bodies, appearance, race, gender, etc..

Watching this video hits close to home. I struggle with low self esteem because I am overweight and not pretty. Growing up, my mother was always knit picking at me about all my flaws. I had acne, so she would always bring it up about how bad my acne was. When I started to gain weight, she would knit pick at me about my weight. She used to tell me that a man would only want me if I was skinny and flawless. If I have to be constantly on eggshells about that and in order to meet a man, then it is not worth the anxiety and depression.

I'm a guy and I even have body image issues. Until 21 I had bad acne, at 22 I noticed that my hair was falling out and I would be extremely careful not to look down because it would show my balding spot. I had gynecomastia (man boobs) until 27, and walked with my shoulders rolled forward to make them less noticeable and always wore jacket even in hot weather to hide them. I actually believed that girls wouldn't want me because I had to have perfect pecs and defined abs. I still have wider hips than normal men and wonder if any girl would want me. Most guys won't open up about their insecurities because society demands men to be a "tough guy" and punishes those who show even a little emotion. I think social media/media in general has the potential to harm men as well as women's self esteem and their self image. We are all humans and experience the same things so we should not separate men and women. Men should also be encouraged to open up, even though its harder for them, it is much better for their sanity and mental health in the long run. Insecurities are insecurities and we should help each other to overcome them, regardless of gender.

Women biologically are judged on their looks so it’s pretty logical that they often have to keep up with social norms of what’s considered beautiful. So a better solution would be to unfollow beauty bloggers, focus on your health (fitness, nutrition), do what you love and the beauty & confidence will come from within.

I'm insecure not because of social media but only because of my family, my ex-friends, I have never felt good about myself because my mom never had told me that I'm her little princess or I'm perfect, no, she used to point out my belly when I was only 12 years old in front of other people or telling me that my friends are so pretty and I'm just OK, then my grandma used to say that I'm ugly and no one is going to marry me and my aunt used to call me weak and useless. Basically, my anxiety and problems with eating a proper amount of food and picking my skin started because of my culture, I didn't fit into the cultural beauty standards (and I'm so sorry for my English it's my fourth language so please don't judge)

Well done documentary DW. This should be shown in schools. This starts at an early age. I started ballet at an early age and loved it. I didn't grow up with social media. However, in ballet companies some ballerinas have problems with eating disorders as they cannot contol what they eat. Unfortunately, this body image, reinforced by social media can be a serious issue for health. Although for most principal dancers you're physically working out all the time and eat properly because you need the fuel. Not keeping a balance and you cannot do your job. However young girls, trying to fit an image that the world wants you to be, before you even have formed a strong identity must be very stressful for them. I blame social media for a large part of this. These issues with self image with girls and even boys need to be addressed at an early age. They need support from family and people who have gone thru these issues and gotten help or support and helped to limit time on social media platforms , finding other interests that don't just focus on your looks and body image that the worlds media dictates for you. Thanks for exposing this dark side of social media. 35:21

It’s interesting how just a few years can make a huge difference. Especially with the pandemic forcing all of us to stay home for longer periods, people are valuing real, raw content more these days. Less filters & perfect lighting, and more vlogs and unfiltered photos. Shows how the beauty/advertising industry is so flighty and ever-changing. We’ll never be “perfect” because the definition is always changing. Sad that so many are making permanent decisions on temporary trends.

"ANYONE IMPORTANT is gonna be on your contact list or someone you talk to in person" to be fair, nowadays you can quite easily go quite some time without interacting with anyone (with possibly co-workers/other students as exceptions). While that's a problem in itself too which should be addressed, I guess that allowing people to be part of a community who would otherwise be excluded is one of the upsides of the internet/social media.

Whenever I think of beauty standards, I think of Judy Garland. The girl was 17, and was forced into taking amphetamines and barbiturates to stay skinny. The extra pressure to stay in a certain image, plus the grueling stress of working on a set, the industry is awful. She ended up dying cause she never felt satisfied with her life, and in the end it drives a person mad. Perfection is not worth it.

I think taking care of your body is important and looking "good" does impact your social life but I feel like social media broadcast an "one size fits all" kind of beauty and a beauty that can only be purchased, which is impossible to achieve. But I also think that social media has given space for minorities and people with different bodies, looks, disabilities, etc to speak up and be role models for others. Unfortunately we live in an era that narcissistic and extreme self absorbed behaviours are considered empowering and a sign of self confidence, which is not always the case. Everyday I feel like what we say matters less than how we look specially when it comes to women.

"My motivation is to keep getting better. I don't compare myself to others, I just want to improve myself." (13:53) - Says a girl who takes part in fitness modeling competitions and shares it all on social media. I am not saying she is a bad human being, but she is either lying or totally unaware of herself. Taking part in competition is the ultimate way of comparing yourself to others and living an active life on social media does not support your statement either. That mindset most people have, associating problems always with others while not reflecting how you contribute to it yourself, is one of the reason why we fail to deal with complex issues.

AllisterCaine You’re miles beyond stupid lmfao. The education system wherever you’re from is complete dumpster fire. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of anorexia or body image disorders in general, but they’re not cute little quirky hobbies people just pick up because they’re bored. Read up on anorexia; your brain experiences involuntary changes that distort your reality when you look in a mirror, it’s not something you can “just get over” without years of work. It’s shaped largely by your environment. Lots of women naturally are bombarded with propaganda and programming since birth about how hot they need to be to matter. For a lot of women it takes years after adolescence to unlearn that shit and accept themselves.

But like Satan (who shouldn't have called you stupid, that was uncalled for) said, most women are bombarded with propaganda their whole lives emphasizing that womens' value comes from their beauty. And men get bombarded with social structures and propaganda as well that hurts them negatively. My point is that you're mostly right: it is her problem, and it is in her head, but the cause is environmental/social.

It’s hard out there when the standard seems to be a small body with big hips, small nose, strong jawline and expensive clothes. Even if you’re a plus size model, most of them look smaller than an actual plus size person so it’s tricky and it makes it harder for society so accept real raw people.

Most of your assumed body standards might be correct. Not sure about wider hips though, but I think that it depends. But definitely not small noses. Small noses are ugly, big and medium ones are definitely more beautiful. Also people often associate small noses with low IQs. (I'm not saying those people tend to be dumber, I only mean, they're often perceived as dumber by participants in a test who have been shown pictures of people and had to rate them based on their looks.) Maybe that's because people with certain disabilities have very tiny noses and that's probably where that assumption comes from. But I still don't get why anyone could find small noses beautiful. Maybe that was created by men who want women to look stupid. I don't know.

Even plus sized models fit the beauty standard of being smooth, proportionate and feminine. How many plus sized women actually look like that in real life?? Very few. Most plus sized women have big stomachs and flat/flabby bums. Not firm hourglass shape w big boobs big bum small waist. It’s not truly representation.

I was not well… at all! I felt like I was going to collapse most days’. I dread to think how I would have been in today’s society, where you can’t get away from it. I know it would sound clićhed but beauty comes in different shapes, sizes and skin tones. This is not to shade celebrities but if they were as confident and comfortable with their looks as they claimed and seemed to be, they wouldn't be having rhinoplasty and botox among other procedures. Even they don't look like the ideal we're all told to chase in order to be considered beautiful. You don't need to have a straight dainty nose to be beautiful. You don't need to have high cheekbones to be beautiful. You don't need to have big lips to be beautiful. You don't need to be light skinned to be beautiful. Your facial features are unique to you and they add a balance to your face that you cannot otherwise achieve. Don't ruin your individuality to become like everybody else. Later in life you'll realize that the only thing that truly matters is health. Take care of your body. Don't punish it and treat it like an enemy. If you do, it'll react likewise and start giving you health issues. Be grateful that you have a body that is mobile, helps you get things done and doesn't hurt most of the times. These are all huge blessings.

I think the way social media affects ppl depends on 1.confidence level and 2. What content the person watches. I look mainly at food, art and clothes/accessories, but I also follow models and fitness trainers. However, I’m a pretty confident person so seeing models doesn’t rly bother me or move me as a woman. I mean, there’s many types of beauties anyway. In my opinion, we need to raise confident ppl who aren’t affected by beauty ideals instead because let’s be honest…beauty ideals existed even before social media and will exist forever. Ppl like to feel special and will put certain things on pedestal because of preferences 🤷‍♂️ That’s why the only solution is to raise individuals who appreciate diversity and understand that there are many type of beauties and it’s ok if not everyone likes the same thing. It’s also important not to base self worth on opinion of others because not everyone is going to like everyone.
