Most main characters in a story change in some way but not all changes are positive. In Aaron Sorkin’s screenplay for The Social Network, we get an excellent example of a Negative Change Arc.
In our Social Network video essay, we’re going to work through Sorkin’s screenplay using concepts of how to write a character arc by author KM Weiland. In this Social Network analysis, we’ll find out the depths that characters like Mark Zuckerberg will go to achieve their wants vs needs.
In this last episode of our series on the 4 Endings to Every Film, we’ll look at what we call a Bitter-Sweet Ending. This is when the protagonist achieves what they want, but fails to get what they really need. In Zuckerberg’s case, his want is to do something substantial to get noticed by the elite final clubs at Harvard. His need, which is also established in the very first scene, is to become more selfless and develop his relationship skills.
Of the many screenwriting techniques necessary to know how to write a character arc, finding their “lie” is a top priority. Weiland describes this as “The Lie the Character Believes,” which is an assumption about themselves or the world around them this is false - but they believe wholeheartedly. In a Fall Arc, Weiland explains that the character’s want is often directly tied to the “lie” and that the decisions they make lead them further into the lie as they pursue their want.
In The Social Network, Mark’s lie is that he feels that by simply being accepted into the social elite groups at Harvard, it will “lead to a better life.” In his pursuit, he encounters Divya Narendra and the Winklevoss twins who contract Mark to help them build an exclusive social network for Harvard students. Instead of playing by the rules, Mark decides to steal their idea and turn it into something all his own - and, thus, Facebook is born. Along his path to success, Mark absolutely achieves everything he thought he wanted. But it came at a price - his close personal relationships. First, his girlfriend, Erica, and then, more importantly, his friendship and partnership with Eduardo. In this Negative Change Arc, Mark embraced the “lie,” rejected the “truth” and ended up alone - the youngest billionaire in the world without a single meaningful relationship in his life.

The complexities of these characters gives the overall narrative a three dimensionality to it and you really feel for these characters that were betrayed such as Eduardo played by (Andrew Garfield). I don't know what really happened in the real situation but the film was very compelling and drew me in through the complex nature of the characters in which drives the story.

A 3D animated short, available of youtube, called “Alleycats”, is also another best example of this kind of ending. A ninja-cat protagonist, kills the antagonist, a worrier-cat, for killing our protagonist’s father (getting his want), but only to realise he had a son, and fail to realise that he needed to forgive, and move on to find peace (not getting his need).

First of all, thanks so much for the high quality content as always. Second, I wonder if there is any sub-category endings along with these 4 typical endings? Ex: I watched Homunculus (2021) and I noted that the ending of the leading character, Nakoshi, is a happy ending since he both achieved his want (dare to face his past) and his need (accept his past and live on). While the supporting character, Ito, has a bittersweet ending because he only achieved his want (face his past) but not his need (accept and live on)

In the screenplay, in the climatic scene Aaron calls back to the opening scene with Sean’s character telling Mark that he was gonna introduce him to girls he wouldn’t normally get to meet and then Sean walks off to check if they’ve crossed 1,000,000 users and mark mutters “you’d do that for me?” sarcastically. I wonder why they chose to omit that from the movie. Maybe too on the nose I suppose. I feel like it’s plausible enough a statement Sean would make and obviously the point of the scene is Mark reflecting on how far they’ve come at the cost of his relationships

I’m not a writer but i would say that as long as you maintain control of the balance then go for it. It’s ok, and even realistic, that a characters wants and needs may shift priority over the course of the film…as long as you make it clear.

She does! It’s called Creating Character Arcs, and it’s the most comprehensive book on character arcs I’ve come across. Definitely recommend. There’s also a condensed version of it on her website: www.helpingwritersbecomeauthors.com/write-character-arcs/

@@StudioBinder I'd like you to break down their visual style and what makes them insanely unique and pulling off the entire concept at the same time. It'd be awesome if you would also break down the pre and post production of a certain music video as an example.

I like the ending very much. I dont know how to professionally analyze a movie whatsover. But when i watched the ending the first time, it was crystal clear what is it intended to, it even pop up in my head "how irony is it"... for someone who created platform to make friends, his friend request probably will be denied ..
