This puzzle was recently shown in a viral video, of an elderly Japanese man who has been trying to solve it for over 10 years! This puzzle was first mentioned around the year 1500 by the Italian mathematician Luca Pacioli! It's been known as "wedding rings", "the ox yoke", "loop de loop", and "solomon's seal".

I've seen a number of variants on the "Wit's End". It's been very popular! The most popular variant is essentially two "Wit's End" puzzles glued together, with the ring on one and a loop of rope on the other.

SOME people will argue that solving the ring puzzle is like thinking outside the box. Instead of moving the rings, we move the strings and loop. However of the hole was small and the loop cannot go through the hole, then the puzzle would be impossible.
@remcomoerland1780
@remcomoerland1780 5 жыл бұрын
I think they are actually quite similar. When you learn the loop tricks with 1 string puzzle, you instantly learn how to do all the others. When i first saw the video of the japanese man that had been trying to solve a puzzle for 10 years (the video is now banned btw for whatever reason) i was comlletely mind blown until they showed the trick. When you did those 2 puzzles, i found the answer in mere secconds because of the answer of the japanese ring puzzle answer. The key is moving the rope instead of the ring or anything else.

@FLEBpuzzles
@FLEBpuzzles 7 жыл бұрын
That's fair. I only got into it near the end, and I could have gone into more depth. Let me see if I can do a better job here. The "Solomon's Seal" puzzle is fundamentally about moving a ring along a string. Because the ring can't move further, the main idea is to move the string instead, until you can move the ring around it. By contrast, the "Wit's End" puzzle is about finding a different way to move a ring past an obstacle. Rather than moving it along a piece, and finding another way to move that piece, the "Wit's End" uses a set of moves to move the ring past a string in a hold, as opposed to along it. Finally, the "Nut and Bolt" puzzle involves not moving a ring along a string, or moving a ring past a string, but switching two pieces of string so that the piece is turned around. I hope that's a little bit better of an explanation!
