Imagine how climactic Infinite's fights would be if they were Frontiers' combat. Hopefully SEGA carries the combat style to make it part of future games, even without it being the focus.

(Response to comment) With mostly 3D games in the top five, how would you rank the Genesis style games (1, 2, CD, 3&K, Mania) best to worst? Personally I'd have had either Mania or 3&K at the top of the 2D list, not Sonic 2 (and also you gave Mania quite a positive critique), so I'm interested what your ordering is.

4:23/11:36: I disagree there. Chaos wasn't exclusively responsible for Sonic's defeat. It was 5 against 1. And Zavock wasn't out of the fight after Sonic hit him once. What was Metal trying to achieve, you ask? Well, I'd say to help the others take down Sonic? Isn't that obvious???

What are your top five or so Sonic games? Always something I'm interested to know just in general :)

(Replying here) How close are your thoughts on Sonic 2 & Mania? I have Mania as better than Sonic 2; Mania and 3&K are cream of the crop IMO, with Sonic 2 in third. Mania has more zones than Sonic 2, reinvents old places pretty well, more variety between Acts in a zone, and better visually.
