The Sony A7IV for small bird photography, is it worth it?

In this video I put the Sony A7IV through its paces to see how it performs for small bird photography. This is not an in-depth review of specs but more an example of practical, in the field use.

Thanks for this! I’ve been looking at a 2nd camera for a while, mostly for stills and could really benefit from the bird eye af (that I do not have on my a9) 👍

Very good video, outstanding images. Thanks. Have you tried the camera on birds in flight using electronic shutter?? The A1 is too expensive . I have no idea how it will perform with electronic shutter. Thank you.

No haven't really used it for birds in flight, I always use my A1 for that. Given that it is not a stacked sensor you are likely to get some artefact with rolling shutter if you are panning quickly, but that's an issue for pretty much every mirrorless camera that doesn't have a stacked sensor regardless of brand. If you are doing a lot of fast motion stuff you should consider the A9II if the A1 is out of your price range.

I can't really say sorry, never used the A9II, but the original A9 was pretty good. The only thing I don't like about those cameras is the small amount of MPs and now they are a bit dated without bird eye autofocus.

What I missed a great deal with testing the a7R5 (compared to my a9) was the missing capability of a shutter sound in electronic shutter mode. It’s just not present there, is this the same with the a7IV?

Yes there is a shutter sound on the A7IV. Are you sure there isn't one on the A7RV I'd be surprised? I've never used one so can't be sure.

Yes mabye the A1 is better, but the price. The same the lens, when you bay the prime 600 is better but i will not pay 11 k euro. For a hobby will i update the A7R3. The have not focus on eye off birds and faster systeem for a good price. Now i have the A6600 for backup for holyday.

Really, who would want to purchase this over the A1 for a measley $4k cheaper? A lot of people without the A1 budget. Great bang for the buck. I wish this camera had the focus stacking feature A7R5 HAS! Oh well, seems Sony leads the way in AF but Canon is kicking it also these days, & for less dollars. SO MANY CHOICES!

canon's eye tracking ability has surpassed sony since r6 and r5.

@@kevc.2958 I don't know about surpass. I hear the R3 is better. But definitely give a run for the money or equal. Note: I just go by videos I watch for upgrade decisions for 2024. Who knows what will be available then. I still think the Canon R5 is one of the best bang for buck cameras out there because of the frame rate (although the buffer could be better) & it's about 3 yrs. old already. You have to admit, Sony forces the others to step it up if they want to sell their cameras.

@@FranciscusScheelings and we appreciate that. You do need to have some kind of reference performance to evaluate the a7iv against, and that's what the A1 comparisons provide.

I cant take your review to be trustworthy and unbiased. Your relative a7iv opinion in reference to the a1 is totally of the mark. 3 x a7 iv for the price of a single a1. From any logical standpoint you shouldnt even have mentioned differences between the two camera's as noone with an a7iv budget would/could even consider the A1... The a7iv is a really great camera offering outstanding quality where it comes to features, autofocus and image quality but by comparing it to the most expensive in the Sony line up you are actually painting it to be a mediocre camera, which it is not at all.
