If you take into consideration why he did it….bc Janice was trying with her anger management classes and Tony wanted to bring her back down…that was 100% something Livia would do. Kinda like her comments about Richie not coming home. Smiling while she said, “Ohh, he probably jilted her. @marklausche1986 жыл бұрын
You don’t get the full effect of this scene without what happens right before it. Bobby has insisted that Janice go to anger management classes to curb her Sopranos temper. She actually makes progress and is at peace with herself and coming along nicely when they invite Tony over for dinner. He notices how she has changed and is not easily pissed off. This pisses Tony off, sort of jealous, so he obviously thinks to himself “oh really Janice? You’re not a hothead miserable F like me anymore? Let’s see, what subject can I bring up the really test you? Oh yeah! Harpo”

This scene hits hard if you’ve ever had to endure such mentally twisted people in your own family. We all love the show, naturally. But if you’ve ever been forced to deal with someone this extreme in your own family, somebody who truly extracts joy and delight in tearing down others, then you KNOW from experience just how NOT funny it is when you actually have to live it. Especially if you’ve ever made serious progress in your life with something you’ve battled for many years. But this is also a wonderful testament to Gandolfini’s genius; it is one of those remarkably special scenes that really shows his acting prowess. That smirk he gives, just gets me every time. I’ve been on the receiving end of that same spiteful shit-eating grin more times than I can count and it just gets my blood boiling. My cousin and my brother are both EXACTLY like this, maybe even a little worse. In my cousin’s case, he has done precisely this over dinner with the family. And no one in the family ever challenges him because they are all afraid he’ll target them next for abuse, should they land in his crosshairs. So they all laugh instead.
