Members of the Soprano family are unhappy with Tony because he hasn't handed his cousin over to the Lupertazzi family, potentially putting everyone at risk. Tony is running out of options and in this scene Silvio calls out Tony on his ego.

Which is why I wasn't surprised when Fatso handled it so poorly. The most important job of the Consiglieri is not what he advises the boss to do in front of everyone else, but what he tells him when nobody else is around to hear it. Tony has literally no other human being, including Melfi, who is granted such freedom to speak their insight into his life. I don't know if Sil was insulted by this exchange, but he should have been. Never shit on your Consiglieri, he may be your only friend one day.

"You need me for anything else?" Great line. His job is to be consilgliere. His exit line showed Tony he wasn't there for personal reasons. And he didn't want to bring up the conversation in the first place. But it's his JOB to advise him. There's a moment of "shit, he's right" on Tony's face at the end of the scene.

@David Sharma I could go either way on this. First of all, I really don't think actors have a difficult life and I believe that most of them are well compensated for what they do once they reach this level (what percentage of aspiring actors even make it to this level?). However, impersonating a character while remembering lines by yourself is a pretty naive comparison to what they do. YOU may think you're doing a good job, but are you really? It's entirely up to the director. Some shoots can last for 16 hours. Some scenes have to be re-shot because the certain delivery on a sentence didn't satisfy what the director was looking for. The fact that Steve Van Zandt was able to perform this well on his first acting gig is a rarity. For all I know, that could be you as well. I certainly wish it was me!

Silvio was 100% right,Tony does have a problem with authority, case in point when Tony was stopped in his car with Carm for speeding, and instead of just accepting the ticket, ready to put the whole situation behind him,he responded to the officer with insolence because he doesn't like authority or being obedient. But what really bothers me is that Silvio was Tony's only true friend, made evident through Tony's Nightmares where many a time when Tony would be feeling like shit,Silvio would appear in the Nightmare and then Tony would feel better and of course there was the most the decisive proof of Silvio's friendship when Tony was shot, putting him on life support-all of Tony's Captains weren't concerned about Tony pulling through, they were all psyched considering the financial gains for themselves if Tony was to die,not Silvio though, who would of prospered the most out of Tony's demise.Even when pressed by his wife to assume Tony's role,Silvio was having none of it and was just upset about the prospect of his friend dying,so for Tony to respond to Silvio's genuinely concerned advice by being defensive and getting up in Silvio's face as if he were one of his common mooks really fuckin upsets me-seriously,how many Consiglieres actually love and respect their Capo?...Just 1-Silvio Dante.

king78802 To properly answer that question it's necessary for me to clarify what the word "Psychopath" actually means since, like so many other Terms portrayed in various media,it has been over-simplified,like the Term "Libido" which has been over-simplified so much over the years that it now means "sex-drive" when in fact it originally meant "Life Energy";the inborn fuel that drives all people."Psychopath",generally gives people connotations of axe murderers and madness, when in fact the word actually refers to a "Personality Factor"-a prime, overarching aspect of someone's behaviour, for example Russel Crowe has "anger" as a personality factor and Shia Leboef probably has "petulance" as a personality factor of his.Psychopath,is a noun derived from the personality factor that is "Psychopathy"-a personality factor that is characterised by an enthusiasm or tendency towards Brutality(savage violence) and an indifference towards the suffering that said Brutality inflicts on another. Now if You contemplate about The Sopranos you'll realise that not only did nearly every Wiseguy and Mook in the show have it,or some level of it,but that Tony B had it alot, which probably contributed to him being quite introverted and unscrupulous.

Agree with everything, well said, but for one thing ("All due respect")--Silvio wanted no part of wearing the crown. Didn't he get all anxious, queasy or whatever, some scene with his wife? That's why Tony goes for that weak spot, he know his friend well, since a kid just the same as Sil knows him, and because Tony DOES suffer this pride, authority thing, and HATES being challenged as to HIS authority, etc...he tries to hurt Sil a little here, i.e. YOU wouldn't know how you are all alone, caus YOU don't have the balls, etc, to be King. Which IS pathetic, true or not, to say to him, as Sil IS his right hand and friend. But that's Tony--same as when trying to get Chris to drink, or rattle Janice's pans, regarding Harpo her son at dinner, since she and Chris were doing BETTER than him...exhibiting some sort of self control, etc....semi happiness.

SVZ brings it 100% to everything he does. He’s an unusual human being. That last line “You need me for anything else”, the words convey that Tony is still in charge and he supports him, his tone and body language convey disappointment. Perfect. People in Hollywood making millions to headline films don’t have a percentage of his acting ability on his first foray.

He's an over-actor and a caricature because he consciously modelled his performance on Al Pacino in Scarface and the Godfather, so these "serious" moments tend to stand out, he's still a good actor and it adds some depth to a role that seems a bit two dimensional on the surface.

He's a joyless man who hates his job and bares his teeth at everybody, even his allies, because he's too stupid and confused to figure out who his enemies even are. Vito Corleone would have been aghast at what a fuck-up of a "boss" Tony was if he'd ever met him. He's got tons of violence but no capacity for love, great at producing fear but incapable of making even his own family respect him, and he makes piles of money without any honor about how he does it. He's a Crip who happens to be lighter skinned than usual, and he knows it, which is why he's miserable all the time.

Thanks. They spent most of the first season accentuating how Tony was the "wrong boss, at the wrong time, at the wrong place", and his sudden nervous spells are simply his subconscious reminding him of the fact that he's not a good boss. Then the series got super popular and nobody liked what a whiner he was, so they banished his conscience altogether and made him a born psychopath. That's a lazy crock of bullshit because psychopaths are nothing like Tony; he's a garden-variety sociopath who's also slightly smarter than the average gang Soldier, whether that gang is made of Sicilians or blacks or Hispanics. He's "the glorified Capo of a glorified Crew", and he's doing it during the last gasp of Cosa Nostra's ability to project power in the NYC Metro area, their own birthplace. Worst part is that nobody really cares, because there's no honor or nobility in being in Cosa Nostra anymore. It's the same shit as the Russian gangs or the black gangs or a pack of jackals in the woods, purely about money and nobody will miss you or care when you're in prison. Just a conveyor belt to Hell for people with shitty abusive parents, low social skills and an inability to live a straight life without murdering or stealing from anybody. Aka, garden-variety sociopaths.

He was an awful boss and caused the end to his 'crew'. In fact, as the series went on it became more and more obvious that Tony was just like his mother. When he kills Chris he even sounds like her when he's justifying it as Chris being better off and his family being better off without him. This is exactly what Olivia said when she and Jr. talked about killing Tony. Tony was Olivia with a penis. Though I don't think he was as intelligent as she was.

Reminds me of my brother. Try to talk to him (in a calm moment) about his anger and how it makes him hard to talk to/warps issues in his mind to seem one way when they are not that way.....and he gets mad. Demonstrating exactly what you are talking about but absolutely refusing to see it.

Tony not taking advice from his Consigliere shows why he was a great character but a horrible boss and the reason things ended how they did. He was a better actor than he was a Don.

When you think about it Tony was basically alone in the end. In the beginning those chairs in front of Satriales were filled with people. In the end, only Paulie was sitting.

I love that scary-ass, dead eyed look Gandolfini put into the character, especially knowing just how emotional of a person Tony really was (can we say AJ). Some characters you just play to the page. You act the written emotion, because that is who the character really is. But Tony was far more nuanced than that. He wasn't a true sociopath. He had emotions. His father (or should we say his mother) just taught him to bury them so deep he randomly passed out sometimes from overload. One second in this scene (when Silvio correctly said he didn't want to eat Johnny Sac's shit) he is fully engaged with his longtime friend. The next second (after Silvio hits a little too close to home), Tony slips into that dead eyed shit and tells him to piss off. JG was brilliant.

Well said. It has long since been recognized that Tony was a prisoner of circumstance, that he saw the bars at the edges of his particular cage and hated it and himself. The first half of the penultimate season, Tony's extended coma-dream, was a reflection of how much he subconsciously understood about himself and what his life could have been.

Good analysis. Glad you distinguished between socio and psycho-paths and noted that sociopaths are made that way by long, painful experience (starting in childhood), versus psychopaths who are literally born without the capacity for fear, doubt or self-hate. A psychopath is Count Dracula; he gleefully preys on you because that's what he does, and he's very good at making sure he doesn't get caught. Serial killers are overwhelmingly psychopaths, because they delight in plotting and concealing their true intent. He never had a soul to begin with, and thinks of himself as a "superhuman". A sociopath is the 14-year-old kid who beats a guy to death with a tire iron because he wouldn't give up his sneakers. He doesn't CARE if he gets caught. Dead eyes, dead soul, cigarette burns from 6 abusive foster homes and a prison tattoo on his forehead saying "FUCK THE WORLD". Nothing left inside but evil. A failed attempt at a human being. Unfortunately for Tony, he wasn't lucky enough to be born a psychopath. He's got PLENTY of emotions, they're just terribly monstrous and fucked up from a lifetime of being exposed to the ugliest, lowest parts of humanity. Tony wants to be normal but he's incapable of imagining a world where things like "having a friend" or "having a wife" mean anything less than "one more person to betray me, one more person I have to intimidate so they DON'T".

'I'm sorry you feel that way' sad moment, Sil's more upset that Tony feels he can't confide in him despite being friends since childhood but at the same time he gets it, none of these guys want to look weak. Tony doesn't want to look weak, so he deals with all the shit in his head alone. That's one of the tragic parts of the series, these friends all drift further away from each other - it becomes about business because you can't have friends in the mob.
