Isn't there a big problem in the fact that a therapist today would comment on therapy 20+ years ago? I mean therapists/psychiatrists were über-freudian back then. It's changed so much. And Chase based his series on his own therapy, which was done in the 70s-80s even.

I don’t see how that’s a problem. They’re commenting on a piece of art. If anything it allows her the opportunity to say that things are different now.

@@marquisdesade3025 She wasn't saying "different", she was saying "wrong", that in the series got it wrong, when the therapy is just really out of date and Freud is just largely abandoned.

@@GabrielNicho I don’t see how that’s even different from what I said. It seems like you think the reactor is unethical for commenting on The Sopranos though, and that doesn’t make sense to me.

@@marquisdesade3025 No, my comment was about that she was attacking the therapy, saying it was wrong, when it is correct for it's time. Plz, rememeber, I made that comment 2+ years ago. Long since I watched the video. She can comment on the therapy as much as she want, she just can't say "That's now how it's done", because that was how it was done back then.

The scene isn't really about therapy. The therapy session is just a mean through which the story is told. Melfi has to explain Tonys situation and his feelings to the audience and she has to do it fast.

Unironically tho, at the time when therapy sessions were stigmatized, this was an excellent examination of therapy sessions

Everyone is different, so you’re a certain therapist to certain people. Melfi likes to go straight to the points and that’s perfect for someone like Tony. If he had someone like you he woulda probably walked out with all the small talk and not come back.

So good! Been waiting on this one! I'd love to see some reactions to WandaVision and Superman & Lois as well. So many interesting ethical and mental health issues!

The middle of the 70s, 75, to 99 is 24 years like how 99 is to now, also 24, and that’s a trippy thought lol

The “how I would have approached it” perspective is very interesting. Is it a matter of individual style, or is there a proven, preferred approach? Thanks for another great video!

Great video! Some more of the Tony/Melfi sessions would be great for you to react to. :)

The green statue of the nude woman may not be a conventional thing for a therapist to have in the office but it’s certainly a great way to foreshadow the mommy issues processing that is about to go down and happens throughout the entire length of the series. The way he’s in between the legs reminds me of childbirth.

Maybe the naked statue is used for the purpose of priming? Like to get the client open up better or shed their walls? But anyways I wouldn't keep a naked statue in my waiting room either lol.

It all seems strange to me. Does therapy have to be comfortable? In my opinion it should be effective. I understand that people are different, but it seems to me that what the author of this channel describes is people who are not ready to work on themselves. And the desire to keep them in comfort will not lead them out of this state. On the contrary, in this case, you need to put pressure, but there is a chance that a person will not stand it and give up, but at least there will be a chance that he will still be able to tune in the right way. I personally would prefer comfort to be the last thing the therapist thinks about when working with me, within reason of course.

Captain Kirk the best Captain ever in Star Trek. Definite points for that one. I think I wouldn't have a real problem with her other than she's not very welcoming. I don't know that I would get a whole lot from her . My favorite counselors(military) are those that I have a common bond too and that use their lives as a example. It forms a team like atmosphere. It helps me to learn because I respect that person more perhaps.

I enjoyed the "Picking out your Territory" thing. .... where Tony grabs what will become "his" Chair. As I get to know Your "Professional Side", Georgia,....were I to become an actual Patient of yours Now, I'd walk into your Office, immediately curl up like a somewhat Frightened Hedgehog on your office floor while Sucking my Thumb.... and See how YOU handled the situation. 🤔 SERIOUS NOTE: I'm a Very Firm Believer that Most Humans would benefit from seeing a Qualified Therapist.....I know that I have...Immensely... and Georgia IS exactly the type of Professional that You want as your Team Player. ✍🏻 RB #trust

Melfi feels more like a plot device to understand more about Tony's inner thoughts and feeling, but the therapy part always feels wrong. Like if i was in that universe i would never choose Melfi as a therapist. His colleague that she later goes is pretty awful too.
