Got in too deep with some gambling debts with connected guys while he was playing college baseball, and his family had to choose between putting up something like $15k or having his arms broken. True story. If you want a little thrill, play $25 buy-in poker with your friends and leave it there. The only other options are going broke at the casino or getting broken by guys who crack skulls for a living. And you never, EVER know who's underwriting the bookies. It'd be fun to play the $1, or even $5 machines, but I know I don't have anywhere near the bankroll to withstand the downswings at those stakes. But I see how the high-stakes players get treated. Nice offers and comps from the casinos, perks in the high-limits rooms, etc. But if I get tempted to play at those stakes, I have to tell myself, "You know how fast $100 can disappear playing quarters? Now multiply that by 4. Or 20." Same with live poker. Gotta play within your bankroll.
