While Frank Luther was doing children's albums for DECCA, he also did a collection of Raggedy Ann albums working closely with Raggedy Ann creator Johnny Gruelle! Some are just collections of songs, but a couple of them (Magic Book and Golden Butterfly) have little bits of narration in between, telling a simple story along with the music. They're simple but incredibly charming, and decently well preserved, so they're always one of the first things I recommend to new fans of the franchise. I consider that a testament to Frank Luther's skill and lovely voice.

@@DustinReckling Definitely. Wonderful video btw! I've been going back through your channel to watch a bunch of yours as I work. I love finding new obscure deep dives. In some of your other theater videos covering Broadway flops and such you ask for recommendations, so I have to suggest the 1986 Raggedy Ann musical as a fun Broadway flop to cover! Confusing, dark, and surreal, with Muppets/Sesame St composer Joe Raposo.

Hey! I have been researching this show for years (I uploaded the pictures you used from my collection). I have lots of new information because, even though there is no surviving video, there IS an aircheck from its broadcast on CBS at the New York Public Library and I just listened to it recently. Quite different than the cast album! Several musical pieces that were not on the album and completely different passages of narration. From the sounds of it, there must have been a big dance number in the cave for Matt Mattox and another major showcase during "Have a Happy Holiday." John Sharpe sounded absolutely great as Tom and Jimmy Boyd's squeaky/screechy voice was perfect for Huck. And Bennye Gattneys' screams during the climactic chase must have cracked a few TV screens! I'll send along some notes, if you'd like.

My first "break" in theater was when I was cast in a junior high production of this musical, and I have not seen another production of it in all the years since. It used to be licensed through Music Theatre International but is not on their current list. Apparently, there were multiple versions of the script floating around: I have at least two and neither of them is the same as the one we performed. My guess is that Luther and his co-writers revised it several times during the multiple engagements at the Starlight Theatre in Kansas City. The TV version was only one hour and, of course, the stage version was two full acts. Most of the music on the cast album was not in the original broadcast (it must be the only TOM SAWYER show that didn't include the whitewashing scene!) and then Luther wrote even more music for subsequent productions. Quite a fascinating evolution.

I was in a community theatre production of the newer version that was on Broadway briefly. It's very good but not as good as Big River.

@@DustinReckling I don't remember much. It was in the 70's a syndicated show. I think it only ran one season. Tom, Huck and Becky were live and everything else was animated. They traveled on a raft on the river and were always trying to get back home. It was Hannah Barbara
