/ screenslam Thursday, December 5 on NBC (LIVE; 8-11 p.m) NBC Universal partners with the multi-talented Oscar and Emmy-winning producing team of Craig Zadan and Neil Meron ("Smash," "Chicago") to ring in the holidays with an unprecedented world premiere television event, "The Sound of Music Live!" -- a live telecast based on the stage version of the 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, starring Grammy Award winner Carrie Underwood as Maria and acclaimed British actor Stephen Moyer ("True Blood") as Capt. von Trapp. From Universal Television, "The Sound of Music" is executive produced by Meron and Zadan. Beth McCarthy-Miller and Rob Ashford serve as directors

I've seen many versions of The Sound of Music and this woman is the only one that made me take an interest in Elsa Schraeder. In all the other adaptations I've seen they either bored me or I considered them just ordinary. She is the first person who made me enjoy this character.

Definitely, I had never imagined Elsa to be such an interesting character before! Now I see her in a completely different light.

I love the original Broadway version so much more than the '60s movie (from which they cut some of my favorite songs, added some lesser ones, & really screwed up the ending, regarding Rolf & what he does after discovering the hiding family). We had a gorgeous production recently, from Lyric Stage in Irving, TX, using the complete, original script & score, w. an orchestra of somewhere between 30 & 40 musicians, playing the original orchestrations--heaven! As much as I loved the B'way revival version that I saw in 2000, which incorporated some changes made for the movie, I now feel the true original is definitely best, at least when well done. I look forward to seeing this TV version sometime.

I can just imagine Laure and idina having an argument on who's the better Elsa... Laure: "Girl please! I was Elsa long before she was cool!!

Fortunately, Elsa's two big musical numbers were kept for this production. It was a travesty to excise them from the movie, since they drive the plot along and explain the fundamental incompatibility of the Captain and the Baroness.

I know how badly Laura wanted to play Maria for this event. But she was asked a simple question, when she asked why she wasn't chose for Maria. Simple question, she was asked. Can you out sing Carrie Underwood? And she immediately knew the answer to that? An obvious, no.

Katie Horner Well, Laura already knew that without Carrie, there wasn't be any "Sound Of Music" show. Plus Carrie is one heck of a singer. And Laura, also knows Carrie is more widely know than Laura, and now there is a side benefit for Laura, she is probably getting more offers. Since it turned into a blockbuster hit. And to answer your question, Carrie out sing Laura anytime. Carrie didn't use her full power on that live production.

Katie Horner Laura knew they weren't going to switch positions with Carrie. Even though Laura does more experience in musicals. But, like I said without Carrie, there was no show. So, I think Laura can thank her stars that she was picked to do it. That is why critics wanted to watch it, to see how badly Carrie was going to do. And surprised everybody with her performance. Even Laura was caught off-guard by how good Carrie was.

robert gardell ..... Laura played Maria on Broadway. And she has a Tony award. And she's classically trained. Her voice is a million times what Carrie's will ever be. The only reason the went with Carrie is for her celebrity.

Ellie Viola, wrong, Carrie was given the part of Maria, long before Laura enter the picture. According to the producers of "Sound Of Music", two years before it was shown they asked Carrie, if she wanted to play Maria. Because of her voice, not because of her celebrity and the fact that Carrie knew it by heart. As matter of fact, they waited to do Sound of Music, when Carrie permitted it. Carrie was there one and only choice to play Maria. Laura was given the part of Elsa, 4 months prior to production.

robert gardell If you honestly think that Carrie Underwood has a better voice than Laura Benanti you sincerely have no knowledge of musical talent whatsoever. You're past argument is that Carrie "didn't use her full power" is an excuse for her poor performance. So as I said before, it's obvious that Carrie was only chosen for her ability to attract viewers. Anyone who thinks otherwise is in denial.
