Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. I created this for educational purposes to spread awareness that we are diverse as a planet.

VIETNAM is an Austroasiatic language that originated in Vietnam, where it is the national and official language. Vietnamese is spoken natively by over 70 million people, several times as many as the rest of the Austroasiatic family combined. It is the native language of the Vietnamese (Kinh) people, as well as a second language or first language for other ethnic groups in Vietnam. As a result of emigration, Vietnamese speakers are also found in other parts of Southeast Asia, East Asia, North America, Europe, and Australia. Vietnamese has also been officially recognized as a minority language in the Czech Republic.
Like many other languages in Southeast Asia and East Asia, Vietnamese is an analytic language with phonemic tone. It has head-initial directionality, with subject-verb-object order and modifiers following the words they modify. It also uses noun classifiers. Its vocabulary has had significant influence from Chinese and French.
Vietnamese was historically written using Chữ Nôm, a logographic script using Chinese characters to represent Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary and some native Vietnamese words, together with many locally-invented characters to represent other words. French colonial rule of Vietnam led to the official adoption of the Vietnamese alphabet (Chữ Quốc ngữ) which is based on Latin script. It uses digraphs and diacritics to mark tones and some phonemes.

Vietnamese here. This is pretty close to how we speak in Hanoi, except for the pronunciation of "e", which in the video sounds more like /ie/. I guess the speaker may come from more rural and coastal regions of Northern Vietnam (Hai Phong, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh...). In Hanoi, with simple differences like that, you are gonna be teased for using "farmer's dialect"

The pronunciation of Northern Vietnamese is closer to Cantonese than Southern Vietnamese does. So as a Cantonese speaker, Northern Vietnamese is easier to learn for me.

The word 交通 in Cantonese is pronounced almost the same with "Giao thông" in Vietnamese

Err... I'm from Southern Vnese and I dont want to be thought that our language is closer to any language. I see many comments like this, but I cant relate any relation between Vietnamese and Cantonese.

I agree with you. I'm a Cantonese- Vietnamese living in the North, and I realize that the Northern dialect and Cantonese are similar in pronunciation, sound, etc rather than the Southern one. It's easier to exchange between those 2 languages.

That's actually ironic. Because the South of Vietnam has far more Chinese people from the Cantonese speaking regions than the North. 🤔

It's very interesting to see Vietnamese use the Han scripted as well, the Han-Viet numbers sounds like middle China pronunciation of numbers

Correct! Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary is maybe the best preserved remnant of Middle-Chinese pronunciation, with the arguable exception of some Southern Chinese languages, due to the preservation of the initial 'ng' and 'nh' sounds as well as checked consonants. The Vietnamese 'Nhật' （日）sounds remarkably similar to the MC /ȵiɪt̚/, while the Mandarin 'rì' is almost unrecognisable.

It never ceases to amaze me how some languages can have monosyllabic words and/or very few phonemes to describe lots of really difficult concepts that need freakishly long words in other languages.

Half Northern and Southern here from Australia ! Since I am not fluent in Vietnamese but I can virtually understand 70% of this dialect because it is the same language to me ! 😁

(exactly same tones) Goodbye Tạm biệt đao ɓiet (formal - 道別) / Dai gi(formal - 再见) / bye (of course :) Hungry đói bụng đou hun Thirsty khát Khua(frequent)/khát(sometimes) Noodle mì mi Father Bo ɓa Mother mẹ mai / mẹ (some people use it) Wife vợ laopo(frequent) / Din vhợ (old fashioned way to say bride) Grandpa ông gong(frequent) / A ang(uncommon) / Ge ong (old-fashioned) Tiger hổ hổu Cat mèo niao And of course, the sino-viet numbers are nearly all matching, accent of the entire sample text is so similar

Good list, though bụng, mèo, mẹ are not Chinese loan words, but the phrasing and usage is definitely chinese influenced

Đói bụng: bụng is an old Mon-Khmer word meaning abdomen. How can it be similar to Hainanese Chinese ''hun'' ?

This is the Vietnamese that I studied for 12 months intensively. It has the "z" sound. Like 'rau' (vegetable) sounding out as 'zau'. Tiếng Việt Hà nội

I know a northern Vietnamese guy and his accent is quite different than the speaker in the video. He calls his accent the "the northern 54 Vietnamese accent" or something like that. I guess his variant of Vietnamese is equalivent to the Mid-Atlantic accent found in English?

To me, southern Vietnamese sounds much more nasally than northern Vietnamese. Is it just because of their accent or is it a different pronunciation?

Most Asian languages lack a distinction between voiced and unvoiced fricatives. Vietnamese and some southern Chinese languages are exceptions. So v/f(ph), z(d/gi/r)/s. Of course in the south things are different. R is R. D/Gi and historically at least V sound like Y.

This is the current form of the Northern dialect, as spoken by the younger generations. People often say that Northern dialects are closer to the "standard Vietnamese" (whatever it is), but that's partially because the Northern dialects are actually losing dialectal features more quickly than other dialects. The word for "son", would be 'con giai' instead of 'con trai' in the speech of older people. Other features such as palatal nasal /ɲ/ for standard written /l/ (i.e. nhớn instead of lớn "big"), the l-n switching (initial /l/ for /n/ and initial /n/ for /l/, highly diverse within the Northern region, there are some places they merged into /n/, or into /l/, or they simply switch place), /z/ for standard written /ɲ/ (i.e. dưng for standard nhưng "but") are also quickly disappearing. In places in coastal Northern Vietnam, /ʂ/, /ʈ/, /ʐ/ are preserved instead of merging with /s/, /c/, /z/, and there are also places where /ʈ/ and /t/ merged into /t/. In the Northeast region (Quảng Ninh and of the Kinh people in China), the clusters of the *C-r- type usually developed into /tʰ/ instead of /ʂ/ so that there's thông for standard written sông "river". I imagine these features are not very well-represented now. But hey, bảy "seven" is pronounced bẩy here in the video, that's a Northern feature.

It's not "Northern dialect is losing its features". Every language/ dialect changes by time, so Southern dialect does. It's not only Northern dialect's matter. Northern Vietnamese is often referred to as the standard Vietnamese because its spoken form is closest to the Vietnamese standard written form (in vocabulary and pronunciation)

Do you have a source for your claim? Most of those dialectal features you talked about are common among the rural northern dialects. The inner Hanoian dialect is widely accepted to be more conservative, thus closer to Middle Vietnamese and Standard Vietnamese, and did not have all the mergers that have happened in the rural northern dialects. This is the first time I've seen anyone claim that the inner Hanoian dialect is losing features instead of being conservative. Do you have a source for this claim?

How intelligible is this with the southern dialect? is it just an accent and some vocab difference or is it more complex?

Near 100% mutually intelligible for standard Saigonese and standard Hanoian. The southern and northern Vietnamese dialects count as 2 different dialectal groups, with differences in tones, some mergers in consonants, some small differences in vowels, vocabulary choice, and some differing grammar points between the 2 dialectal groups. The distance between standard Hanoian dialect and standard Saigonese is around the distance between New York English dialect and the British Received Pronunciation (~ 300 years). Other rural dialects in the 2 dialectal groups of southern and northern are farther away from each other and less intelligible (~ 80% maybe between rural southwest dialects and coastal northern dialects maybe). Note that in this video, the speaker is probably from the coastal northern area, probably urban and educated (and influenced by standard Hanoian), while the speaker in the southern Vietnamese video has a strong rural southwest dialect with some standard Saigonese influence (hypercorrection). They sound more different from each other than standard Hanoian and standard Saigonese really are to each other.

French colonists forced us to get rid of Han Chinese influence and adapt to Western culture. The writing switched from Chinese to Romanized script in the early of 1900’s.

No, it is differentiated by accent. Southerners tend to pronounce the digraphs gi and d as /j/, while Northerners pronounce it as /z/. There is also a difference in vocabulary. These accents would be the equivalent of a British accent and an American accent. Both mutually intelligible, but slightly different vocabulary.

This sounds far less lilting than the southern dialect videos to my ears. I understand there are more tones in it but, it sounds a lot flatter and more clipped with the speech a little more rapid. The southern dialect sounded very musical to me. I almost never hear this particular variant where I live. There’s a big Vietnamese community near me but, I guess they’re all from the south. They don’t sound like this.

Cứ mỗi khi có clip nào nói về tiếng Việt hay trang phục Vn là lại có vài đứa vô nói giọng miền bắc giống QĐ còn miền nam thì lai chăm khơ me : )))) hoặc là ngoại hình miền bắc giống đông á còn miền nam giống đông nam á, trong khi đó dòng người Minh hương di cư từ miền nam trung quốc về miền nam Vn đông nhất cả nc, nhóm ng hoa này và cả ba que gốc hoa bên kia rất nhiều ng cũng tự nhận là ng Vn, tự nhận mình mất gốc r , v mà có 1 bộ phận ng kinh lại tự xem mình giống tq?? Ông cha thì ngàn đời chống Hán hoá r bây h con cháu lại cố gán cho mình giống H á n, làm như v để làm gì?? Chứng tỏ mình thượng đẳng hơn sao?? Nhưng mà.....= ))))) cho dù có cố chứng minh thế nào thì mấy nc ĐÁ kia nó cũng ko quan tâm đâu, nó còn khinh như chó á, lướt cmt yt xem, t còn nhớ có 1 tk tàu cmt rằng " ng Vn tụi m là Đná, chưa bao h là Đá cả", và câu tiếng Anh sau t giữ nguyên "we always look down on you", = ))))) , dm đọc có thấy tức ko, vả lại, như v cũng ko kéo tụi m ra khỏi ngữ hệ Nam Á - ngôn ngữ chung nhóm vs khơ me đâu. Làm ơn hãy có lòng tự tôn dân tộc, hãy tập trung làm giàu đi r tự khắc TG sẽ chú ý đến mình, tự khắc có đứa muốn giống mình, chứ suốt ngày cứ thấy sang bắt quàng làm họ, theo sau ng khác như cái bóng của ngta thì đất nc sẽ mãi trong ao làng, ko bao h vươn ra biển lớn dc cả.
