Surigaonon / Tandaganon
Native to: Philippines
Region: Surigao del Norte, most parts of Surigao del Sur, and some portion of Dinagat Islands, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur and Davao Oriental
Ethnicity: Surigaonon
Native speakers: 500,000 (2009)
Language family: Austronesian
is an Austronesian language spoken by Surigaonon people. As a regional Philippine language, it is spoken in the province of Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Sur, and some portions of Agusan del Norte, especially the towns near the Mainit Lake, Agusan del Sur and Davao Oriental.
Surigaonon is a member of the Bisayan languages. It has been heavily influenced by Cebuano due to the influx of many Cebuanos in the region. However, most Cebuano speakers can hardly understand Surigaonon speakers, except for Cebuanos who have been living in the region for years.
Surigaonon is very closely related to the Tausug language of Sulu and the Butuanon language of Butuan.
Tandaganon (also called Tinandag, Naturalis, Tagon-on) is a closely related variety spoken in the central Surigao del Sur municipalities of Tandag City, San Miguel, Tago, Bayabas, Cagwait, Marihatag, San Agustin, and most of Lianga. It can be classified as a separate language or alternatively as a southern variety of Surigaonon. There are about 100,000 speakers.
Surigaonon (also called Jaun-Jaun, Waya-Waya) itself on the other hand is the northern (Surigao del Norte) variety, with about 400,000 speakers. Surigaonon speakers are distributed throughout Surigao del Norte, northern Surigao del Sur, and northern Agusan del Norte.[3] Surigaonon and Tandaganon speakers can understand each other well, even if they use their own languages in conversation (similar to the mutual intelligibility between the Boholano dialect and the general Cebuano dialect).
Together, Surigaonon and Tandaganon are spoken in Surigao del Norte and most parts of Surigao del Sur, except in the City of Bislig, municipalities of Barobo, Hinatuan, Lingig, and Tagbina. In the non-Surigaonons-speaking areas of Surigao, most of the inhabitants are descended from Cebuano-speaking migrants, and the rest are natives who speak Kamayo, a Mansakan language.

This variant of Surigaonon is not the one spoken in Surigao City and the rest of Surigao del Norte. This variant is called Yaun-yaon/Tandaganon/Tagon-on (Traditionally called Naturales) which is spoken mainly in the city of Tandag and the municiplalities of Tago, San Miguel, Bayabas and Cagwait, Surigao del Sur. The one spoken in Surigao del Norte and the Northern part of Surigao del Sur is Jaun-jaun where they change y into j, and L into y. Surigao: Marajaw na duyum Tandag: Madayaw na dūm *but they are at most identical, just some huge difference in terms of phonems.

Ohhhh this explains a lot. I showed this to my mom who is a Surigaonon native speaker yet she said that some words and phrases are incorrect. She is from a town near Surigao City.

It is actually still debatable if Tandaganon is still a dialect of Surigaonon or a separate language itself. They sound mostly identical in vocabulary and structure, but the phonology and some words makes the two seem different on the surface. Such case is similar to Cebuano-Boholano relationship.

There are so many Austronesian languages I never know or never heard their name. Austronesian is a very large language family with more than 1000 languages. But interestingly, the numerals in this family is very similar and not so diverse. When numbers come, I know this is exactly Austronesian! This is very close to Tagalog and other Philippine languages.

I think I've heard the theory, as to why austronesian languages numerals are often very stable is that they correspond to body parts. That relationship is apparent, in the fact many austronesian languages retain lima/rima/nima as the word for hand.

@@ANTSEMUT1 Yes, I also know this one, “lima” (hand) for 5. The native Kra-Dai numerals, for example Buyang in southern China and Hainan, also use “hma” (hand) for 5 while most of modern Kra-Dai languages use Chinese numerals. This is equivalent to Thai/Lao “mü” which means “hand”.

Here in Surigao City where the northern dialect is spoken a.k.a "waya-waya" or "jaon-jaon" we say: Ngaj-an instead of ngay-an (unya in cebuano) Waya - Wala Jaon/Jaun - there or there is (which is equivalent to na'a in ceb) Buyan - moon Yaot - ugly (maot in ceb) Jawa (same with boholano) - yawa Marajaw - Maayo in cebuano Madajaw - fix or heal (madayaw) Paso - kanang init gikan sa sun haha and also kay gikan nagluto SUR - TDG - CEB Jadto - Yadto - Adto Jari - Yadi - Kini Wayong - Bayho - Nawong

This is TANDAGANON (Surigaonon of the South). We have different dialect at the Northern Part (Surigao del Norte) which is "Surigaonon", widely spoken in Surigao City, Dinagat Province, Siargao Island, Mainland Municipalities of Surigao del Norte, and part of Surigao del Sur like the CARCANMADCARLAN areas, and some part of Agusan del Norte like Jabongga and others. Mostly we use "y" instead of "l" i.e. "waya" for "wala" (meaning; none, nothing, lost, or left). Bayay = Balay Haboy = Habol Dayan, uyan, maya, tuyo, Etc..... We also use "J" instead of "Y" but not All words (different from Bol-anon Or Boholano) Like; Jare, jadto, jaon, jaton, jagot, jatot, jate, jaga2x, jara, yujag, gajud, ija, ijo, ajaw, pajong, dugjom, tujok, baja, jugto, maradjaw, karadjaw, dijo, dija, bijo, etc.... In surigao we call; Ido = Dog Miya = Cat Ambaw = Rat/Mouse Bangga= Cockroach (Tandaganon has different words for these animals). There are many similarities though but they have their own distinct words. Tausug is also similar to Tandaganon and Surigaonon which is quite surprising because of it's geographical location.

As a davaoeño i can tell the difference between the mix language of mandaya/mansaka/kagan language and the bisaya/ Cebuano language. Interesting ❤️

I'm Surigaonon and I speak the language. The language presented here is understandable. There are just words that i don't recognize. It seems like it is the Tandaganon version. Because i feel like we Surigaonon speak with minimal difference.

Madayaw na adlaw! As I was listening to it, I found that it's like a combination of Mandaya, Mansaka and a very large percentage of Cebuano (similarities) including the pronunciations and vocabulary. To native speakers there or at least those who knew about the language's history in a linguistic manner, are these just Visayan influences? It actually sounds to me as a Visayan language than a Lumad language to me at least. Though the two groups share much similarities, this sounded more like Cebuano than other lumad languages like Mansaka, and Mandaya.

Oh okay. I made a reseach and found out that Surigaonon is actually a Bisayan language. So it is actually the other way around. It is a Bisayan language that has lots of similarities with Lumad languages, and perhaps loanwords.

@@johnlanes5425 I am a native speaker. In fact, I was the voice behind the video. We usually consider ourselves as Bisaya, and when somebody asks us what our language us: most of us would usually respond Bisaya. Surprisingly enough. Some of my townfolks don't even realize that Cebuano speakers cannot understand them, because they thought our languages are "not that different."

@@GaryHField Personally, I'd never had interactions with the Tausugs yet, but I once tried to research about how their language is like. As a Surigaonon, I can site some similarities but not at all intelligible. It is like "I should have understood the language but I can't, and it's annoying" feeling. My family also loved to hear Baleleng, a Tausug folk song. It did baffle us as to what does the song means, as we seem to pick up some context, but we cannot be sure if we've guessed it right.

This is the Mother tongue of my Grandmother, and my Grandfather speaks Philippine Hokkien (Chinese) cause he's an ethnic chinese, They both prefer to not speak their language to their children they only used bisaya to their children, my Dad, uncles and aunties eventually learned how to speak these languages by themselves, I want to learn both language so that I may pass it to my children.

in bisaya "i dont know" is ambot and "inday" is usually called to a lady

Because this is a Southern Visayan language. It is closer to Tausug than Cebuano.

Well sa Surigao we also use inday to call a lady but it's common to us to use inday as ambot, we use ambot din naman pero sometimes we use inday (INDAY NIMO!) = (AMBOT NIMO)

Surigaonon, Tandaganon, Butuanon and Tausug are South Visayan Languages, they are closely related. We could posinly say that Surigaonons are the christianized and hispanicized version of the Tausugs.

Indeed, in fact Surigaonon (Tandaganon), Butuanon and Tausug are related languages. We can say that we (Surigaonons) are the Christianized and Hispanicized cousins of Tausugs.

In the northern Surigaonon variant (Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, Siargao) it is marajaw so technically you’re correct.

It's my mother tongue. Actually, it is still debatable if Tandaganon is already its own language, or still a dialect of Surigaonon. The two has almost identical vocabulary and structure, it is just their huge phonemic differences that makes them sound different on the surface. 100 percent similar to Cebuano-Boholano debate.

If it is necessary for vocalization, I can help. But I don't know if it would really be like a person speaking that dialects. But I think I can vocalize Meskhetian, Ottoman Turkish, Cypriot Turkish.
