How do you become The Father of Festival Sound? 50 years ago, organizers of the historic Woodstock Music and Art Fair in upstate New York searched for someone who could handle the unprecedented challenge of running their sound system. Luckily for them, “this crazy guy in Boston,” Bill Hanley, was available. Hanley’s innovative setup and the resulting recording forever shaped our collective memory of this generation-defining concert.
Brothers Bill and Terry Hanley formed Hanley Sound in the basement of a storefront on Salem St. in Medford’s Haines Square in 1957. Among a long list of innovations, Bill pioneered techniques in amplification, sound system design, and sound reinforcement, all of which came into play at Woodstock.

Nice to hear about the people,e who made it happen, and the logistics behind it, not just the artists who made appearances. There will forever be more untold stories of Woodstock, ore than the event itself.... I would love to see more of these with more unseen footage...I know its out there somewhere......

I can still go this day remember the unique sound that the natural amphitheater provided. Listen to the announcements especially to hear the reverberation. I love listening to the music again.

NEVER HEARD OF MCINTOSH AMPS UNTIL NOW. ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT CROWN ,QSC AND, BGW WERE THE INDUSTRY STANDARD AMPS FOR CONCERT SOUND.

At the time, Mcintosh were considered high end hi fi amps that you would have in your living room stereo system. The thing is, at that time large scale concert sound didn't exist, nor did proper power amps. The McIntosh amp provided a large amount of power (for that time) but were also very hi fidelity. I believe there was 48 of these amps chained together to power the Woodstock sound system. The Grateful Dead would go on to use those amps for the guitar players as well as their famous Wall Of Sound PA they built in 1974.

It must have required a lot of MC 350 amps to get 12 KW of audio power!

ALWAYS THOUGHT THE PA WAS POWERED BY CROWN AMPS AND THE SOUND CONTRACTOR WAS CLAIR BROTHERS.

Yeah, but look at old racks, like my Carlsbro 150watt PA, 8 Ohms.. It plays way louder (tho whitout the groundsub) than my 800watt HiFi 2 Ohm TV/PCstereo measured

I was right. 11 thousand watts! PA systems are quite a bit larger now.
