I find the concept of a Meta-Divine Realm interesting, and I hope you can explore it more in the future. That being said, I think Kaufmann's definition of Monotheism to be quite flawed. His description may hold for rigid Deists but not for the Monotheism practiced by most theists. I wonder how Kaufman would classify mystics within monotheistic religions since, in his view, something like achieving unity with God would be impossible. Anyway hope the rest of your day goes well.

A very good point. This is the first time I hear about Kaufmann's theory and as a thought experiment I'd say it's up to the definition of a particular monotheistic religion whether it allows, and if it does how much, moving the state of being from human to godly, or closer to it. Imo the existence of mystics in a certain society is not dependent on the type of prevalent belief system but a belief system might create barriers for mysticism to arise. Also I'd briefly mention that looking at the cult of Aton in the Ancient Egypt it seems as if the conflict of monotheism vs polytheism stems from this ancient power struggle.

Absolutely, additionally it seems to come from a very rigid, 'nothing created is therefore containing any unity with divinity' which is contrary to most monotheistic religions' actual beliefs, rules, or even institutions. Heck, from a Christian perspective, in nearly all forms of Christianity in history, the idea would be outright heretical and seems to have more in common with dualism. (God = Divine, everything else = Material, probably bad.) and a lot of what various so-called gnostic heresies were really cracked down upon.

Great video Angela! I think Kaufman might be missing the bigger picture about polytheism, in some cases at least. If you look at Hinduism there is only one God, which exists in all things and in which all things exist, but there are numerous deities in the All. Even though these deities have different qualities they are all part of the One, essentially. And it was indeed possible to appeal them individually while still understanding that only Brahman exists. It's the same principle in many belief systems, even in Gnostic Christianity which has hierarchies and other deities apart from the Godhead. It's the same principle in Alchemy where the different planets/metals have various aspects and powers but are all part of the One, and again the same in Kabbalah with the Sephiroth. If you look at the pantheon of Gods in any polytheistic religion it's obvious they correlate to different powers, and on others levels, aspects of the self and the divine. Although they can be appealed to separately there is no contradiction in believing in only one God. Initiates and priests of ancient Egypt, Greece etc would have been well aware of this. Oh, happy Valentine's by the way!

I have always thought of Yeshua's intervention to save Humanity (Salvation) as a 'magical operation'. I must disagree with Kaufmann's assessment of monotheism. I feel he may be unduly influenced by modern Judaism, with its rigorous adherence to the 'One God' concept. For instance, in Genesis 1:1, the original Hebrew word for God is 'Elohim,' which is plural and should be translated 'the gods'. The word used for 'created' also means 'organized pre-existing material' which is not creation from nothing (creatio ex nihilo) as most Christians insist. All modern monotheistic religions seem to embrace polytheism to one degree or another, which they also deny. Simply the concept of the 'Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit' itself espouses three gods. While many modern Christians insist this is a part of the 'mystery' of the Trinity, we are still speaking about three gods ACTING as ONE. Even the most diehard adherent to the monotheistic philosophy must admit that prayer, whether for forgiveness (confession), gratitude or intervention is a type of 'magick.' As far as humans tapping into the meta-divine realm, this is mysticism by definition. All religions, even monotheistic ones, have mysticism as their source, no matter how much of that mysticism has been stripped away in modern times. Fascinating and thought provoking video Angela! Thank you so much. 😁

The Trinity of God is quite understandable when putting Genesis 1 and John 1 together. Before starting his creation the Spirit of God moved (thoughtfully) over the waters of the earth. After this God, who is the mediator of his Spirit and his Word, spoke His Word. By His Word (which later became flesh and blood among us) all physical things came into being. The working of the Trinity is also reflected by the tripartite tabernacle. To enter into the Holy of Holies (the Spirit) you must first sacrifice both your flesh and your soul. It is also recognizable in all humas, as God created man in his image. Genesis 2:7 “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground (body), and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (spirit); and man became a living soul”. Elohim is a Pluralis Majestatis. The Third heaven and basically the rest of the spiritual domain became a subconscious domain to mankind when they sinned and were expelled from the Garden of Eden (a parallel dimension to earth). You can become conscious of it again by dying to yourself (body and soul) with Christ thus giving way to the Way of the Spirit. Rebuilding yourself this way takes long-term dedication and sacrifice but will result in everlasting spiritual power and authority. Which makes it obvious that there are very few Christians who live this way. How many alternative practices are run by Christians? Those who heal and exorcise seem to love the stage more. Christians must develop a more systematic and dedicated approach.
@WereScrib

Not to counter too hard, you're more reading into the Trinity concept as a distinctly uhh, well, honestly Mormon read. While not all Christians are trinitarians, the godhead concept of three acting as one is not how the Trinity is usually interpreted, rather coming about from Mormonism and gets into practitioners primarily in the USA due to well, kinda influence from Mormonism. The Trinity is usually interpreted as part of the trifold concept of existence. More in common with aspects or the same, or even with the concept you find in say, eastern Christianity on occasion, of Soul, Body, Mind in a person. We wouldn't consider those individual beings acting as one person, rather as part of an individual. I.E. This is why in (mainstream) Christian theological views, Christ is not 'man and god united' but more properly an aspect of God within a Man that are not in perfect harmony. Christ is both Man and God, not a separate individual who was created completely from God. Rather influence, an aspect, or an emanation temporarily removed for a specific role.

I'm not familiar with Kaufman or his theory of a meta divine realm but i have done years of independent study and I am part of very old oral tradition based on Norse mythology and we are based like the Egyptian mystery school in Hermetic philosophy. Thus magick to us work's around the 7 principles. It is never specifically said in the kyballion "these are the 7 principles in which magick work's" but it certainly alludes to it when it states that "all the doors to the temple will fly open at your command" The divine .. the "all" everything. The entirety of the universe..exists in the mind of the creator. The creation exists inside the mind of the all thus the all is mind... What science and the occult both tell us is that the universe is fractal in nature and therefore we are a fractal part of the divine having the same ability to create with our mind that the creator does. That is what we are taught about why magick work's as for the gods. The elohim who famously said "let us make man in our image" were 7 in number. They are also know as "the 7 churches" 7 Angel's 7 seals etc and they are the 7 planets of antiquity. Just like the 12 tribes of Israel, the 12 apostles, the 12 imans of Islam, the 12 trials of Hercules etc are all the zodiac. To the uninitiated they were thought to be real. To the initiated we are taught that mount Olympus, asgard Solomon's temple or the "home of the gods" is the mind. The "God's" are complex symbols each one corresponding to an aspect of the mind. Thor for example is Mars and symbolizes the raw Will that needs to be tempered by wisdom which of course is Odin. I'm sure you've probably heard all that before..or maybe not as I said i learned from a completely oral tradition. The myths were written down..what the symbols meant never was. I know how history looks at monotheism being a progression from polytheism but what it should do is find the thing that makes them both true.. If you can't separate things like creation vs evolution or nature vs nurture then instead of arguing over which one is true instead see how they are both true

Excellent presentation. The concept of the Metadivine realm is similar to what I understand through my own research, particularly through Shamanistic journeys, meditation, and dream recollections. I think of it as the Divine- or Source, outside creation, but the Spirit is immanent in it, through us and everything. The gods I see as different- Self-created beings, some at the beginning of the Emergence of Light from the Primordial Chaos.

There was also another question in my mind, are they really highest Deities, according to how is their behavior described in Greek and other Mythologies (arguing, conflicts, treason etc.) Just personal wiew, hope you have a great day😄. I have to wonder where, as you mentioned, Saints and also otherworldly creatures like angels and demons fit into Kaufmann's hypothesis. For the life of me, I cannot think of a monotheistic religion, there are lots though, that do not have some form of spiritual beings that are neither gods nor man but have semi-divine powers and some level of autonomy. If they do not occupy a meta-divine realm, where are they then?
@drangelapuca
@drangelapuca 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. This is one of the counter-arguments scholars have pointed out. Kaufmann's theory is too black and white and doesn't quite take into account the multi-layer of belief systems. He would see the otherworldly beings in the bible at the same 'level' as human beings, I think.
@Frithogar

This is similar to my question. I don't think the Originators of the Monotheistic religions had Kaufmann's view, otherwise wouldn't we have heard of this from them? Making theories retro-actively is fine for creating one's own speculative faith and practice, but how does this qualify as academic? _Or_ did Ankhenaten (sp?), Zoroaster, Moses, Jesus and Mohammed (etc.) all know this and did they speak of it in their Orations and Writings? I don't think I've ever heard it before. It would seem to follow from Kaufmann's logic that "The One True God" (TOTG) would have to have created _everything_ else if "He" was "The Creator". If so, then it would have been the burden of these Originators to explain why a Good God would create evil. And this does seem to be the case when we look back on these ancient Ideas. They all had to explain this while deities like Zeus never explained or justified themselves. They just did wtf they wanted. Ankhenaten, tho, didn'thave to explain because the King - supposedly - was the only human who's morale mattered because only he had authority and controlled the lives of others. So he prolly had to be protected from the miseries and sufferings of the real world and stay "Positive". I 'spect this was his own undoing. But I think it just makes more sense, both in view of ancient religions and current reports about "Extra Terrestrials" to accept the Meta-Religious view - whether it's an old or new idea. Mantids, for instance, even tho they are reported as being "psychic" af, are _still_ unaware of our suffering. Demons are not, apparently. So there seems to be a linear descent from some higher order beings, but not all. Some are just their own thing. This suggests a depth of field, and not - as we see in all ancient Pantheons - a 2-dimensional surface with flow-charts. LOL
@Frithogar
@Frithogar 3 жыл бұрын
@@DarkMoonDroid Yes, a good point. I get the feeling that the creators of these religions were more interested in the political power struggles of the time than getting a coherent cosmology or theogony. Elaine Pagels pointed out that the New Testament and other gospels were the product of oneupmanship between the various writers - Reading Judas: The Gospel of Judas and the Shaping of Christianity (I think). It would have been the same when the Hebrew Bible was collected and edited as Kaufmann pointed out. The theologies seem to be back-projected into the scriptures e.g. Augustine and the doctrine of original sin. So what you say could mean that monotheism is a later construct to explain inconsistencies in the text used to make up the scriptures. I love that you have brought in extraterrestrials. I have wondered if they are a continuation of the belief in fairy-like beings or modern manifestations of deities and or angels and demons of earlier ages or something else entirely. Dr. Jenny Butler, a good friend of Angela's Symposium, has done some work on the subject and I hope that Angela will be able to look at it with or without Jenny when her work commitments are not so demanding. As for which beings are aware or even interested in our suffering or happiness is something I have not given much thought to - I shall now retire and make up for that oversight :D

Great video! Thank you so much! I struggle to see though why the meta-divine realm, the source of everything in polytheist systems, would not translate to God in monotheist traditions...when perceived in a manner that is not too antropomorphic. I mean, to me they seem very similar when presented this way. Especially in Christian mysticism when God is compared to the source of everything. So I wonder whether the system you presented does not make polytheists to hidden monotheists... And thanks again! Really enjoying your content.

Very interesting presentation and I am intrigued by this concept of a meta-divine world. However I would take issue with Kaufmann claims about monotheism, which is clearly his own interpretation and is not constant with the ontology of those faiths. How would he explain away mysticism and the performance of miracles? In essence in monotheism God is arguably the meta-divine world. What we can say about monotheistic religion is that any magic performed can not be by virtue of the will of the practitioner alone in that it must conform to the divine will and thus must invoke God eg faith healing, prayer, etc. This alas gives rise to the idea that anything that is not from the divine source must be from Satan and therefore magic can be seen as satanic - an unclear distinction which has lead to great injustices. Never the less it is clear that mysticism (unity with divine) and magic(miracles, faith healing, etc) is very much part of monotheism but varies widely as to its accepted practice. I am probably stating the obvious in the above. Sorry for that.

Just watched your interview with Jeffrey Mishlove on New Thinking Allowed, and I just had to come check out your channel! Your work sounds fascinating, and as a fellow PhD student, I can appreciate all the hard work you have put into it. I'll definitely be checking out more of your videos. I do have to disagree with one point in particular that you made about monotheism, at least in the Christian religion, namely that God is not "directly accessible". This was largely true in the old testament- God would only occasionally select a few people with whom he would communicate and perform "magic" through (or as modern Christians say, "miracles"), such as Moses, Abraham, etc. But in the new testament, Jesus says that after he returns to heaven, he would send down the "Holy Spirit", so that any believer could have direct access to God for communication and magic/miracles. While Jesus performed many miracles, he told his disciples that they would also be able to perform miracles in his name, and the extent and power of these miracles could be even greater than his. (And of course, many of these are documented in the New Testament as well.) The Christian belief is that Jesus came to pay for sins so that ultimately we could have direct access to God. The New Testament also mentions that the veil (that prevented most people from entering the part of the temple were God was able to meet with priests) tore in half, symbolically showing that access to God was no longer restricted. I grew up going to a private Christian school, and they basically put us through a degree in Biblical theology lol. While I am still a Christian, my beliefs definitely don't line up 100% with the church I grew up in (and even farther from Catholicism). I honestly rationalize most of my differences as an interpretation issue- if something in the Bible seems to not line up with science or observation, maybe it was interpreted incorrectly (usually interpreted too literally- such as a 7 day creation or Noah's flood). Over the past year I have become very interested in parapsychology, which has opened my mind alot. I've always believed in miraclulous actions through the Holy Spirit and spiritual entities, but I hadn't considered the possibility of psychic abilities as an inherent human property. Who's to know if God enables every act of magic and psychic nature, or if we all have this ability and perhaps in certain situations God enhances our ability or channels through us? I really liked the point you made about the concept of miracles (from your other video on the New Testament), and how are they actually different from magic? In the church I grew up in, topics of magic, witchcraft, and the occult were very taboo and condemned, which seems so ironic to me given their belief in miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit. The typical assumption was if a miracle was not performed in the name of Jesus, then it was caused by the devil. Or in many cases, even if it was in the name of Jesus, and the person or miracles wasn't liked, it was the devil then too, trying to trick us. (Personally I've seen many videos of churches getting "drunk in the Holy Spirit" that seem rather dark and evil. Some pastors seem like scam artists, not everyone who claims Jesus is honest.) tldr- if there is only one God, then either he individually enables certain people to perform magic, or he created humans to all have the potential to cultivate psychic or magical skills.

Thank you for your interesting videos. If I’m not mistaken during the late Egyptian kingdoms, it was the pharaoh Ahtkenaten who broke with their tradition of polytheism and even built a new city in Amarna dedicated to a new theocratic order banning multiple gods in favour of one god notably RA. Would this earlier shift be influential in Judaism’s shift to our current Christian monotheistic paradigm?

Great work and an excellent video! Still, I believe there is an error when saying that monotheism is incompatible with a magical view -- if this were so why would there be such strong condemnations of magic in the monotheistic traditions? You don't put the death penalty on the books for make-believe. Also, in the Christian view of the world there is a way to access the metadivine realm. That method is called 'theosis', which is like apotheosis except you're joining with the Trinity as opposed to becoming a god in your own right. It is this connection which allows humans to be thaumaturgos -- wonder-workers -- and there is at least one Christian saint (Gregory Thaumaturgos) with exactly that title. Finally, I think you will find that there is not such a diametric opposition between monotheism and polytheism as one might think. Neoplatonism is one attempt to bridge this gap; another is the understanding that at least some polytheism posit a higher being or beings than the gods with which humans interact -- creatures so high and infinite they are beyond human conception; the only way to deal with them is through the gods or angels which are closer to earth and able to dialog with humans. This is where the image of the Jacob's ladder in the Old Testament comes from -- a transfinite being beyond comprehension with whom angels interact , bringing down messages to humans and taking humans words back up. So in third century Rome you could have a "polytheist" who believes that the gods are either servants of something greater or perhaps images, shadows, of this reality. This "polytheist" would rub shoulders with a "monotheist" who believes in one God served by angels and saints , transcended humans, who also are the visible image of the invisible God. Their viewpoints are almost identical, except for minor differences in terminology over which they would kill each other.

I was thinking you might find some links between these two belief structures within Platonic emanation theory. I don't actually believe that polytheism and monotheism are a completely stark boundary in the context of traditions that center around a series of steps and hierarchies between humankind and the ultimate, singular divine reality. They are polytheistic in the sense that they involve multiple entities that are considered "divine" in relation to humans, but they remain subordinate to an ultimate, singular deity which could be considered the only actual God within those systems, thus warranting the label of monotheism. I think this applies in many esoteric sects of all three Abrahamic faiths.

@@drangelapuca Sure, Pantheism is the doctrine that all reality is identical with, or composes, divinity. We are all divine (as is nature) and there is no divine separation. I tend to call god 'the all that is'. All that is, is god, in fact it is more accurate to say that 'all that is, is'. The divine unity of all things is the natural, harmonious state but there are times when individuals or humanity as a whole chooses to 'apparently' separate itself from the 'all that is'. Why, to experience it. In this state we are still god but it is the magical nature of we humans to want to experience even a state of chaos and pain. Because we can and because such a state is an aspect of reality. Experiencing the illusion of being separate from 'the all that is' can be valuable, for example it can eventually give us an important perspective on the actual unity of all things or it can give us the experience of self annihilation thus knowing where are boundaries are. The human mind is remarkable. We are chameleons and can change our reality just with thoughts but there is always a glue (original intention) inherent in the background, it is what makes it possible to change because we are all inherently connected, not just to each other but to everything. Were this not the case, this channel could not exist and I would not be writing this now.

I would like to hazard a few conjectures at the great disadvantage of not actually having read the work you so expertly summarized -- which if I can I will remedy and if I am entirely out to sea and missed the point my apologies in advance. It seems to me that Kaufman has slipped into a strict monergistic Deism theoretically. But this view is entirely outside of the Hebrew theism he is purporting to represent -- if this turns out to be the case. The hierarchy of being involving ascent/decent, that he seems to have rejected and which you underscored, is precisely the vehicle that Iamblicus took up to resolve the tensions between sacrament (a type of magic) and the infinite omnipotence of the One/HE WHOSE NAME WE DO NOT SAY. It makes no sense to have a Temple and sacrifices to be able to come before G-d on the Deistic view to be sure. (I am using these indirect references in deference to Orthodox Jewish sensibilities). And yet the Hebrews had (and have in a different mode) such a practice and much more. Iamblicus as a correction to Plotinus does seem to open up a way for beings of a deeper decent to have beings/emanations of a higher one “come down” so to speak and interact in a view that rectifies the seeming paradox of monotheism/polytheism. Such a view makes sense out of how a people worshiping the one true G-d would and could perform sacrifices, observe laws of spiritual hygiene, and effect various feasts according to times etc. If there is no theoretical way to make sense of this then I think your recognition of practices that contradict theory (theology) is correct. But then the debate turns into polytheism vs. monotheism in zero/sum polemic. If this understanding of “deistic” monotheism is correct, assuming I understood it properly, it is quite difficult to explain why G-d would have created whatever this -- our realm of existence is. It is also rather odd the He would institute practices while fundamentally ignoring them or require homage of any sort at all because it simply is negated by His “distance” so to speak. Messengers of G-d, dreams, visions, theophanies, and revelations are standard fare in the Torah. If this deistic reduction is correct the author will have as much difficulty explaining the Hebrew faith as a polytheist would in explaining what they do.

Given this is an academic channel, I will quote from a primary source. Psalm 82.1:" God(Hebrew /elohim) has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods( Heb. elohim) he holds judgment." Given that the word for "god" shows up twice, " the first elohim must be singular , since the Hebrew grammar has the word as the subject a singular verbal form"(has taken his place). The second elohim must be plural, since the prepositiion in front of it (in the midst of) requires more than one...the preposition calls for a group..." (Michael S. Heiser. Ph.d , The Unseen Realm: Recovering the Supernatural Worldview of the Bible, page 27). the term monotheism is a relatively modern word and does not do adequacy to what the Hebrew Bible actually says about the divine realm. I believe in a transcendent and immanent Deity that created all things, even other divine beings, or elohim. I believe that prayer is one way of interacting in this Divine Realm to the Creator. And I believe in miracles. So I would have to disagree with Kaufman on this point. But I do enjoy your channel and your approach :) Thanks for all the academic fun!!

I have struggled at times with this issue, at young age I was educated in the greco roman gods plus saw spirits/studied magick young. I landed in the choosing one god over the others then said yes this is God the Creator the all powerful, the others are beneath. As an adult I attempt to avoid being a mono practicing poly by one communicating with God as a Trinitarian/Modern Gnostic. Downgrade everything else to angels, demons and spirit beings. Now any "god" for me is only title not level. Magicians are allowed to ascend yet there exists a ceiling by the one God which is confusing since 3 personalities are experienced very differently. My opinion is that to some degree, there's a difference in semantics but not substance. The beings that a polytheistic belief system would call gods, are called saints or angels by christians. Now fundamentals protestant christians talk about angels little and saints not at all, but still believe in miracles. The acts of Jesus that make a change to the physical world outside of physical laws, like turning water into wine, controlling the weather, walking on water, healing the sick, and feeding multitudes, are always called miracles and never called magic. So, is there a practical difference between polytheistic gods and saints, between magic and miracles? Or is the distinction only semantic?

The Bible speaks of many Gods. There just can’t be any before the One. Judaism speaks of magic in the Kabbalah. In Abrahamic religion God asked for incense, herbs, woods, stones, sacrifice. There are seers, prophets..everything from hair that gives you strength, to healing, to spiritual gifts. Angels and demons that have dominion and power, an accesible Kingdom of God inside of them. Jesus says in biblical scripture “did I not say ye are gods”. There is worship, prayer, miracles, intercession of saints, sacraments, and immortality. It’s hard to not view that as a highly accessible supernatural influence that is brought on by belief or rituals… magic. Are Christians against shamanism since it’s more about practice or technique than religion? Is it the practice of magic they are against, because they obviously believe in it. Also I was very curious to see what you thought about witches who claim to be born as one. I understand there isn’t a way to technically prove that but I would love to hear your viewpoint because I have heard some witches say they were born a witch. Although they may come from a line of witches, it’s difficult for me to understand how if it’s based on practice or belief. It’s like saying someone is born Buddhist, or born a doctor. My comparisons with witches and low church evangelicals indicates a vast similarity in thinking: God/the Universe exhibiting signs that the believer/magic practitioner can read and adapt to and prayers/magic spells being effective. So this Kaufmann statement makes me somewhat skeptical. UPDATE, when having listened to Kaufmann's explanations: he doesn't really describe monotheism in principle, but the inherent logical consequences of it if developed to its extreme. Except in real religions, logic is not an issue, dogma is. And dogma ís just what another patriarch says. And still, he is factually wrong: monotheism was not a "revolution", monotheism developed in two steps: the deuteronomic reform, when the Israelite religion was monopolized to a small section of the priesthood, and secondly during the Babylonian captivity, in order to keep the Jewish community intact. It wasn't a revolution, it was a purge and an application of endogamy to keep the group intact.

Under theism, from the Bible, God and humans have a relationship. As for the ancient Jews, God had a covenant. This is how that great gulf between God and humans is overcome. In Christianity, the great gulf between God and humans is overcome in the God-man Jesus, who is fully man, fully God. The afterlife is not Heaven but rather Earth and Heaven becoming one in which humans participate in this coming about. God interacts with Abraham, Moses, Job, etc. God causes miracles. The God described in the video is more like the philosopher's God or a deistic God. On the other hand, even under the concept of the God I described, true, there is little if no room for magic.

It's interesting that you were not able to address Jesus and the Holy Spirit in your analysis. Jesus and the Holy Spirit are key to the religion. You jumped from a Judaic religion to the unbiblical practices of the catholic church without addressing Jesus or the Holy Spirit. Christians do interact in the spiritual realms. Our authority is the highest in the spiritual realm. The trouble is when we turn away from God to our own ways we open ourselves up to the spiritual consequences, we open ourselves up to attacks from evil spirits, and fallen angels. Some people see fallen angels as gods. The fallen angels saw themselves as gods. They offer hidden knowledge and secrets of power to entice. Satan told Eve she could become like a god if she listened to him and turned from God. She would have secret knowledge. It lead to death. Satan leads to death. The "mystery secrets" lead to death. Jesus Christ leads to light. If you're on a dark path and suddenly you find you need to escape it, turn to Jesus. He's there for you even in the darkest times. No matter how deep you think your covenants are with the darkness, Jesus is stronger and can set you free. Call on his name. Satan hates mankind. Satan is destined for the lake of fire. He knows that. Don't let him drag you there with him.
