May 2024 I set out to drive the South Carolina Adventure Route solo. Not only did the trail have some surprises for me but had me heading home early with only half the route completed. I hope you enjoy this overland adventure and come back for the next half when I redeem myself in the completion of this route. I find it can be difficult to find overlanding routes on the east coast so I hope this video can be of some help in discovering your next route.
For the route:

You're in more dire need of a hitch winch and a Stanely coffee mug than anyone I have ever seen. Love what you do. Camera work is awesome. I know its a lot harder than people think. You have cracked the code of making people feel like they are along for the ride without the "look at me" obnoxious and narcissism, so many youtubers have these days. Good luck

Welcome to SC brother! Great video!! Nice rig. Hope ya get to come back and finish the trail! I recommend some MT tires in this SC peanut butter mud, a winch, and a big water gun to spray out your radiator to prevent overheating as well as clean off your windows after slinging some of this thick sandy mud here. It will scratch your glass when you roll down the windows otherwise. I learned that the hard way 😂 New subscriber here bud.

Just watched this and the "frogs" you were hearing at the campsite on the side of the road are actually cicadas - we had 2 different hordes hatch at the same time in parts of SC and they were so loud people were calling 911. A good ole Texas boy. Lived there for 21 years by Corpus Christi (Portland). Was prepping for the beach overland thing when we moved to SC by Charleston. My wife and I did a piece of the SCAR a few months ago. She told me it was time to get a winch on that trip 😂. Great road to travel. Just so you know when you get down by Charleston, there’s all kinds of off-roads that splinter off the scar. We just start driving down all different roads to see where they went. Was a blast

That first road looks like some of the the old rural roads in Sumter, SC when my family moved there in the late 1980's. They were designated roads and had all the signage but they were dirt in the dry season and mud holes when it rained. It was probably the only area I've lived in where folks who don't off road for fun actually needed mud tires!

I am asking this in the most sincere manner, but have you ever driven off road? And by off road I don't mean down the occasional dirt road or through your own yard? Know your vehicle, know your limitations, and don't destroy trails. BTW, a starter is an electric motor, swamp it, and this is often the result; many have drains to relieve water/mud out of the housing. Any component that isn't sealed, and goes under water should be checked, including differentials, transmissions, and transfer cases, especially if they do not have extended vents.

Hi, I’m new to your channel and I hope you don’t mind some constructive criticism. So I live in SE NC. I’m about 40 mins from Marion. I’m very familiar with a number of these trails, and that recovery was borderline dangerous - every bit of it. I hope you’ve watched it back and had time to reflect on it - what you would have done differently. I don’t mean going around it, I mean this specific recovery. If you’re not in the practice of doing that, you should get into it. You’ll only be safer and more effective the more you do it. I just have some totally unsolicited advice for you, some of which, I’m sure you already know because it’s common sense, but here I go anyway. If you’re going to wheel alone - get a winch. Anywhere, anytime… if you’re alone, you better have a winch. You mentioned not having one, and I know it’s probably on your list now. You also really need front recovery points. Not factory hooks because they usually aren’t rated for a recovery. They’re typically meant to tie down the vehicle in transit. Maybe a C4 Fab low pro with some recovery points and a winch mount? Snatching… that isn’t a kinetic rope you’re using. Don’t “snatch” like that or something can break, some light jerking is fine, but those looked very hard. You might trust your gear (shackles, etc), but you have no idea what that guy was using and if his gear broke, that strap is coming for you. Next time have a conversation about recovery and the best moves, and have him use your gear. Clear communication is essential. Even solo recoveries. Talk out loud. Have a conversation with yourself. Look at the problem from different angles. By stopping and looking at the situation with a calm clear focused head, you’ll likely get out quicker than had you not stopped to figure out plan A and B before starting. Use of drive modes… general rule of thumb, if you’re on rutted dirt or gravel, best practice is 4WD. You’re going to have better tire purchase on the ground. It’ll feel more stable. I’d also air down a bit. If you’ll be ok and off pavement, maybe only 25psi. It’ll still make a massive difference in comfort and traction. If your wheels are really spinning with no traction, crawl won’t help you. You’ll notice that in the adverts, they drive up hill in sand, then turn on crawl in reverse and it “crawls” out… yeah… or they could have put it in reverse and let gravity so it’s thing. You had no traction generally, no drive mode is going to find you traction where none exists. Spinning your wheels… when someone is pulling you on a soft surface, spinning your wheels makes everything 10x worse. Mud, sand, etc. You should have put it in reverse and either idled or helped to the point where you began to spin, then stop. He should have been in low range and should have pulled gently. If you want to snatch, get a kinetic rope… back to, “communication is key”. Unskilled recoveries kill. Additionally, when you’re using traction boards, don’t spin your wheels on them. It melts down the lugs on the board and makes them less effective. If you have metal lugs on the board, it could even damage your tire. Speaking of tire… if you have oversized tires, you need to make sure you have a 5th instead of using the factory spare. I don’t know about the tacos… can you fit an oversized tire underneath? Getting through the goo… Momentum is your friend. When you see thick, soupy mud, slowly meandering through is your best way to get stuck. If you have chunky tread, you want to spin here to clean out the tread blocks so they become more effective. Water crossings… you’re going too fast. You want second gear, low range on deeper water crossings. anywhere where the water will go maybe 3/4 if the way up the wheel. A depth that can form a bow wave. For smaller crossings, when you hit the water at 15-20 miles per hour, things break. Things that shouldn’t be blasted with water, get blasted with water. Wet is fine. Underwater is usually fine, though not in the case of your starter. I think the fact the water was muddy may have made that worse. But yeah, It’s the pressure that causes electrical issues usually. I would also recommended at a minimum, unplugging your starter and alternator, and adding some dielectric grease to further waterproof those connections. If you find yourself out here again, hit me up and I’ll happily go with you. I mean that. I’m usually always ready to hit a trail with anyone. Just add a couple new things to your recovery gear pack… one of which being a new recovery gear, namely an extra hitchlink you can put a shackle through that you can install in a passerby’s receiver so you can confidently trust the gear. A kinetic rope, extra soft shackles, a couple of tree savers, and a couple snatch blocks… and that’s with or without a winch. If you’re at a bad angle, these things can help, and if someone helping you has a winch, and they don’t have the additional gear (which is entirely too common), you will be ready. If you’ve gotten this far, I’ll just say that my faithful Xterra has been with me for about 10 years. I have entirely too much money in mods and I’ve only ever had one issue with it that was resolved with a couple hundred dollars in all this time (knock on wood). It’s a 2014 manual Xterra Pro-4X and its fully armored. Full aluminum skids from the front to the gas tank, full aluminum front bumper, full OME suspension, steel rear bumper with a tire carrier, UpTop roof rack, weBoost, CB, GMRS, diff breathers, sliders, snorkel to a fully sealed cold air intake, factory rear locker, etc, and it’s very well lit. If you’re interested in some background, I’m originally from VA and have been wheeling since I could see over the wheel and reach the pedals. 11ish years old. I’m in my early 30s, and have been all over the country. Moab, blackbear pass, telluride, all over PA, VA, NC and SC. I’ve hit random trails in SE OK, parts of north TX, AZ, NM, MT, CA, and more. I don’t do mud if I can help it. Mudding is uncivilized in my opinion lol. I just don’t see the lure of doing donuts in a field. I like technical trails. I say all this to say I have thousands of trails miles of experience and I want capable and prepared people on the trail with me. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve wheeled with who have damaged things, broken an axel shaft from hopping with the power on, shown up with zero recovery gear, have no forms of communication, etc. I’ve towed several people out of trails over the years that shouldn’t have been where they were.

You broke the first few rules of trail blazing in mud country.. 1- Never go alone 2- Never take the hardest path 3- Never take the trail you're going to need a winch to conquer, if you ain't got a winch 4- Never run around in the forest in your underwear, haven't you seen the movie Deliverance.. Thanks for the great laugh..

Honestly you should have stopped at my house in South Carolina first. Then I could build your truck to get you out and wash yourself off. Parts cost only.

The commentary is exactly what makes people think young people are dumb. " I previously thought SC was a flyover state." Maybe open a book once in a while and think about how you sound when you say dumb shit like that.

our forestry service sucks at road repairs, please stop digging the holes deeper. I have not been able to get to my fishing spot in 4 years because they refuse to fix after fixing it one time and mudders dug it out again, now the road has been closed for 4 years.
