I enjoyed this comparison! My father was half British/ half Southern (Alabama). I have experienced a lot of the same observations you mentioned in him. He was more reserved, stoic, and bookish than most Southerners, but also very conservative and averse to traveling overseas. He didn’t even want to go with me to England so I could meet his relatives with him. But I always look up to his character, his intellect, and his style.

I think I prefer a bit of a mix. In clothing, travel and education, I tend to British. The Southern xenophobia and lack of travel I find pitiful. As to friendliness and social attitudes I am thoroughly American, but without the Southern prejudices, particularly religious and racial prejudices.

In my opinion the stereotype of Southern bigotry is overstated. I have lived in the south my whole life and I haven’t known many people who would be rude to a gay or black person. They might hold opinions that fall outside the modern parameters of acceptable opinion, but these opinions are more general. The vast majority of southerners would like a respectable black man over a trashy white man every day. For example, I was helped at a store by a flamboyant black man and I showed him the utmost respect because he was professional and helpful. You will have a hard time finding a more hospitable and polite part of America than the south. However so many outsiders (Northeast and West Coast) are moving down here that most of the Southern distinction is fading away, and my generation is barely different from the rest of the country.

Your arrogance and understanding of southern people is rather pitiful

You're being xenophobic about southerners right now. Go to a British pub and shout out that you love immigrants, particularly middle eastern ones. You will see bigotry rear it's ugly head with a stiff upper lip.

Excellent video. As a Southerner, I do believe aspects of the British gentleman influenced the Southern gentleman. Our cultures are so similar yet so different it makes for an interesting discussion. Of course being from South Louisiana, I must also give credit to French gentlemen as well.

I'm from GA and the English culture and old southern were sort of cousin cultures, and you can still see that here with our love for tea😂

Which reminds me, I need to get a seersucker suit and linen suit for next summer. I live in Las Vegas Nevada USA. I grew up in Virginia USA. I probably gravitate more towards the British Gentleman as an IDEAL though. Many Americans don't look outward towards the rest of the world because everything they want can be satisfied within the contiguous 50 states. Its a consequence of hegemonic influence on the world. We export more American than we import rest-of-the-world. Me personally, I travelled globally so much during my 20 year U.S military career that the desire is depleted. These days I am content to take road trips within the United States. Ive driven cross country three times. But in my past world travels I saw American influence everywhere.

One thing i have always found appealing about the idea of military life is global travel. I am sure you have seen many things that have been eye-opening and inspiring. Thank you for your service. It is one of my ambitions o drive cross country and experience more of what the US has to offer

I am so glad you covered this. My family being British lived in the south since the 1700’s then ended up in Texas and now we are Latino so this is a great point of view and comparison. Thank you for covering the English and the Southern Gents!

Thanks for the video I have always respected the Southern Gentleman and English Gentleman. The movie Gone with the Wind gives a good look at the Chivalorous Southern Gentleman. I think the state where the Southern Gentleman was most prounced was in New Orleans where there was a field where the most duels fought in the world were fought, that is how gentlemen fought, I think though that was due to the mix of French, English and Southern Culture. I'd like to say I identify with both but I think I fall short of both Gentlemen styles:)

New Orleans definitely has an interesting blend of cultures, it’s top on my list of places to visit soon!

I just recently discovered your videos and have subscribed to your channel. What a coincidence that you were born where I grew up and still live. And even funnier, as I have always felt I was born in the wrong place and time. Victorian England is for me. (Just came back from my first trip there, too!)

I think you missed a subtle point about british style. If you look at traditional boating blazers or polo attire, they are very flamboyant with bright colours. It seems like the brits lost a lot of their flamboyance after the war but it still exists in tiny pockets such as both the universities and a few public schools.

That’s a good point, that is definitely a smaller demographic of British people compared to the Southern demographic, but after all, Dandyism was once a huge movement in the UK!

Outstanding comparison. While there is a vast difference in our ages, we seem to have much in common. I am from Alabama and always strive to be a southern gentlemen: however, I love England and my preferred style of dress is British country.

Hi Robert, I am glad you enjoyed the video! There are definitely many differences and similarities, but striving to be a gentleman either way is an admirable aim. It's cool to know you are from Alabama too!

I am a Brit and I agree we are very insular as a nation.Where did you grow up in the UK?Do I detect a Northern accent? One other suggestion is it might be an idea to introduce yourself at the beginning of your videos.I have watched most of your videos and I have no idea of your name.

I think Britain has sadly become more insular in recent years! I lived all over the UK, from London to Wales to Cheshire, so I don't really have a single town that I call 'home'. Haha yes, I have deliberately kept the channel fairly anonymous so far, but my name is James! Nice to meet you, Wayne

So you must have been quite interested to see Daniel Craig in the "Knives Out" movies - the man we know as James Bond portraying a southern gentleman! About the limited travel, I think that is an American things, not just a southern thing. Americans tend to travel domestically and many do not even hold passports.
