Railroading in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was extremely dangerous. Many railroads averaged over one death per railroad per week. Improved brake systems, knuckle couplers, and better signalling gradually reduced the carnage to the point where railroads started being concerned about safety.

The Wreck of the Old 97 was an American rail disaster involving the Southern Railway mail train, officially known as the Fast Mail (train number 97), while en route from Monroe, Virginia, to Spencer, North Carolina, on September 27, 1903. Travelling at an excessive speed in an attempt to maintain schedule, the train derailed at the Stillhouse Trestle near Danville, Virginia, where it careened off the side of the bridge, killing 11 on-board personnel and injuring seven others. The wreck inspired a famous railroad ballad, which was the focus of a copyright lawsuit and became seminal in the genre of country music.[1]

Please check the story line you provided with the facts. I am a direct descendent of people in very close proximity of the accident that heard the train approaching the trestle and heard of the events directly from more than one of them.

Some, but not all. A folk singer named Katie Letcher Lyle, enamored of the train wreck songs she heard as a child, wrote a book " Scalded to Death by the Steam" about the songs, and the historical facts about the incidents, with period photos, lyrics, and music. It's fascinating, have read it many times over. They were very popular at the dawn of the recording industry.
