The speed of light is often cited as the fastest anything can travel in our universe. While this might be true, the speed of light is the EFFECT and not the CAUSE of this phenomenon. So what's the cause? On this week's episode of Space Time, Matt helps explain what the speed of light REALLY is and why it’s the cosmic speed limit of our universe!

Not that it matters one way or the other, but are you a gay man by chance? I can't picture a woman using the phrase "wide, athletic stance," because it's something a PE coach (or gay man) would say to describe another man's pose. But you're totally right in that observation - and now I can't not notice how wide his stance is. He looks like he's getting ready to drop a duke in a port-o-pottie.

Whats Up If i recall correctly from my recollection of useless knowledge. When talking about the act of smelling, like a fart, were talking about the nerves in our nose is picking up particles attached to air molecules. In other words, we're smelling the air, which is not massless and travels at the speed of sound at sea level. If something requires a medium to reach you (ie smell and sound), then you already know it can't travel at light speed. And air molecules (doesn't travel in a straight line) bounces around other molecules before the scent travels to your nose, which is why there's a time delay between gas leaving underwear and you smelling a$$. Someone please correct me if I remember / described anything wrong.

I came to this realization from thinking about how a video game is made. The programmer is God and maybe aka the Universe. The light you see is the End Result of the Video game. But the hardware and code behind the scenes must make that light must move faster than light or before the light moves. In fact, they have measured some sort of weird delay between what actually happens and what you see. Almost like when your screen refresh on your monitor to catch up with the computer calculations... maybe that is like quantum information signals can finalize where the waves intersect to create atoms.
@Chickston

@@joostdriesens3984 Something that really blows me away is the concept of overlapping light cones. Like you can see 1 light year further to your "right" than someone 1 light year to your "left". That means that things in that light year of space exist casually to you, but not to that person 1 light year outside of that light cone. Screw uncertainty, it is certain that points in space can exist and not exist at the same time depending on your point of reference.

If you want to keep your sanity, I suggest forgetting Leonard Susskind and going with Lynyrd Skynyrd. Quantum is getting stranger and stranger, and the math is starting to reflect this. It's almost as if quantum theory, or even the universe itself, perhaps, is reacting to the math, which is reacting to quantum theory. The universe is behaving like it isn't real, like it's an illusion, that changes according to what we say it should be.

This NECESSARILY represents, INVOLVES, AND DESCRIBES what is possible/potential AND actual IN BALANCE. INDEED, time DILATION proves that electromagnetism/ENERGY IS GRAVITY; AS E=mc2 is DIRECTLY and fundamentally derived from F=ma. "Mass"/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. Ultimately and truly, time is NECESSARILY possible/potential AND actual IN BALANCE; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. E=mc2 IS F=ma. This CLEARLY and truly explains c4 from Einstein's equations. THE FOURTH DIMENSION IS THUS CLEAR, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. BALANCE and completeness go hand in hand. I have mathematically unified physics/physical experience. The stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky. A PHOTON may be placed at the center of what is THE SUN (as A POINT, of course), AS the reduction of SPACE is offset by (or BALANCED with) the speed of light; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. It all CLEARLY makes perfect sense. E=mc2 IS F=ma. Time DILATION proves that electromagnetism/ENERGY IS GRAVITY, AS E=mc2 IS F=ma. GREAT !!! IT IS CLEARLY PROVEN. INSTANTANEITY is thus CLEARLY FUNDAMENTAL to what is the FULL and proper understanding of physics/physical experience. (Very importantly, outer "space" involves full inertia; AND it is fully invisible AND black.) By Frank DiMeglio

This episode was as accurate PBS news or documentaries have become since 2016. making their name stands for pure something or other ... WHY should everyone's CLOCKS reconcile off the speed of light ..? whether they're travelling 99.99% the speed of light -- and shoot a laser in front of them (or turn on their headlights) ... only for their clocks to slow concomitant to their relativistic speed, such that they perceive the speed of that light to simply be "C" despite their speed also being indistinguishable from C ..? WHAT OTHER than light is demanding this reconciliation. This claim is PURE POOP. (Much like the 10 hit pieces they did on orange man. Pure dookey of a MALE-COW ... which are words this channel is just TOO insecure to endure ... as if they knew they were true!? lol. Talk about reconciliation!

Question- some galaxies are so far away from us that even at the speed of light we could never get to them. If the speed of light is actually the speed limit of causality in the Universe rather than just a speed limit, then how could galaxies this far away possibly have any gravitational effect on us since we are moving apart faster that the speed of causality could reach us?

While today they are too far away for new information to reach us, the gravitational effect information of today left long ago when we were still reachable, it just took until now to reach us. While there is the gravitational effect of the past versions of those galaxies, there will never be such a gravitational effect from those galaxies as they actuallly are right now. Just like we see them now the way they were long ago, but will never see them the way they actually are right now.

We need a finite speed limit for our *experience* of reality, which is also what space-time is fundamentally defined according to. There are unanswered questions about the nature of that experience though, and it's worth considering that on some deeper level, everything does exist as a hole, cohesive, "here and now". Both could simultaneously be true.

Question on one way light speed: 1. Can you take electron A and electron B and entangled them and separated them by a logical quantified distance that would allow for a very accurately measured speed of light. 2. located a light source at electron A. 3. Locate a timer and light sensor at electron B 4. used triggered change in electron A to simultaneously (or infinitely close), initiate the light source as well as the simultaneous change in electron B, and simultaneously (or infinitely close), use the change in electron B to start the timer, and when the light source hits the light sensor use the sensor to simultaneously(or infinitely close), stop the timer. 5. Then take the clock time and subtract the near simultaneous trigger time from electron A to the light source, and the near simultaneous trigger time from electron B to the timer, and the near simultaneous trigger time from the sensor stopping the timer, and thereby calculate one way speed of light across a quantified distance. Would this work to measure the one way speed of light and could this time be used to better identify the speed of the second leg of the two way light speed measurement?

Somebody in motion will have a velocity and his time would be slower than your time if you are at rest. So technically your past is that person's present. Hence there's no reference frame to describe reality. We perceive reality through reference frames. The only thing that you and that guy in motion can agree upon is space time interval or space time. That's the only thing which every single observer can agree upon and that is the only reality. The universe the way you perceive it is only real to you and you only. It's pretty enormous that c= the "speed of causality" and not merely the 'speed of light'; this is something so fundamental and intrinsic to even understanding the EXPLANATION of all other concepts, that I am genuinely behooved that it isn't immediately foregrounded and demystified in any of the other basic introductions to astrophysics. (Including this series - but kudos for finally getting there.) Hundreds of hours of videos purporting to "explain" astrophysics, and to date, this is the first one which finally desubstantializes the hypostasis of "light-as-a-thing" against which all is measured, or worse still, the (ab)using of the term "photon" as shorthand for that speed, or its us a metaphor for causality of all other forces. It's amazing, really, the arrogance that physics has in assuming this is either known, assumed, or expected of anyone when it proclaims eg continental philosophy to be opaque.

yes, the kind of causality you are thinking about is what most people have in their heads, as a general sort of common sense notion. However, this notion is not well understood and it is not even clear that it is a real "thing" - it could well be that the universe gets by without any sort of cause and effect, and it is just a thing we made up having evolved as primates solving everyday problems. By contrast, the casualty we talk about in physics is a much more restricted concept with a precise mathematical circumscription. The relationship between these two kinds of causality is that the more precise one places bounds on how the more general one could act.

Photons constantly change from particle status to wave and back. When the do they change from tardonic (-c) to tachyonic (c²) due to recompression, so speed of light is illegal in reality, that is, it's an illusion, it's the time the reaction takes that is read as a speed of light, the reaction being that photons switch from wave to particle when they encounter a resistance (reflection) and don't travel as particles, but recur at a resisting, or reflective surface they encounter

This is the best modern series! Accessible, often hilarious, built for the "modern crowd" and most importantly accurate hard science. LOVE IT. Ok a question. In its pre Big Bang state, could C have been infinite? I have read and seen that during the inflationary period that spacetime grew at a rate faster than C, and as you have said here and in other videos that spacetime does not care about C. Is there a way to test this? Could we create localized variable spacetime densities? This question might tie into a video about "warp drive" speculation based on Alcubierre's work? Thanks again! Time cannot truly play a part in anything considering it is a common denominator created by man. I love how we revert back to old people who are dead and use old shit math to attempt to make sense of anything we experience. There is no universe and this isn't real. You will "die" its a perceivable common denominator and a system created. Solipsism is real. Your are the center of life. Look around and see that you truly can do anything. How about a discussion of this: I’ve heard that quantum physicists, neurologists, and spiritualists each have models of the universe that invalidate the other two. Yet, isolated, each seems to work well in their own realm and for their own purposes. What is the nature of the universe that unifies these three models - for such a three-way conflict seems to imply that they are each missing a proper scope within which to observe, and unify, all three from a single perspective - a transformation of the questions each asks of the other two, into a scope that implies Mu? (Or Nu?) “I’m not sure how it is pronounced”.

Imagine if the speed of light was 10 times faster at the start of the univers , that will make the universe 10 time younger than previous thought.

I spent 15 years working around radiation. I had to remember that photons have no mass which is hard to get one's head around. I'd like to know more about this as electromagnetic radiation definitely interacts with matter like it should/would have mass such as knocking an atom's electrons out of orbit or the more violent pair production at higher energies. It may be helpful to consider photon particles as little massless bundles of energy instead of matter which would indeed have mass. But, energy has mass due to the theory of relativity... Confused

fun fact: time slows down when an object approaches the speed of light. time stops when you are at the speed of light (although no particle with actual mass can reach it). that means even though from our perspective it takes sunlight 8min to reach earth, to the individual photons themselves, no matter how far they are, they are always annihilated the very moment they are created because there's literally *no time* for them to exist. trippy shit eh?

Nick Patella if you define "exist" as the time in between creation and annihilation, then no, they don't exist at all from their own perspective. from our perspective (or the perspective of any 3-dimensional being) however, they exist. both conclusions are valid. and this fact also accidentally fits photons' behaviour described by quantum mechanics - they can simultaneously be in two completely opposite/mutually exclusive states.

Yeah, that was my understanding of the speed of light, you add velocities but they only work up to a point because as you reach the speed of light, the time-space transforms and therefore in relation to the target where the light shines the speed doesn't change, but I kind of like his no velocity theory too, never hear of it, but it does make sense to me. What do you think?
