Historically, pitchers have used a variety of concoctions to improve their grip on the baseball. By doing so, they create more spin on the ball, leading to more movement and making it harder on opposing hitters. The use of foreign substances, specifically Spider Tack, rose to astronomical levels during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. For those who may not know, Spider Tack was originally developed for powerlifters. During Strongman competitions, it helps them to maintain a grip on Atlas stones. Pitchers found that the rosin-based chemical mixture was an easy way to increase spin rate, leading to more success. Major League Baseball had to introduce a new policy that mandated an umpire to check the pitcher every inning. Today, I will cover five prominent pitchers who were believed to have utilized Spider Tack and examine the impact on their results.

Paul Fry is an interesting case that never gets mentioned. Was a solid relief arm for the orioles for a few years during their rebuild, but the second the substance crackdown started, he completely lost all effectiveness, throwing wild pitches seemingly every outing. He was eventually cut by the orioles early in 2022.

Fry is definitely an interesting case. I'm an O's fan so I for sure remember that dude, but 2020 was the only season he was effective. His first half of 2021 was average at best even before the crackdown.

Do you remember this. STL Cardinals- I think the pitcher was Giovanny Gallegos. Gallegos pitches the ball in the dirt. Yaddy Molina blocks it and is now looking for the ball. He’s looking and looking. He can’t find it. Oh there it is, stuck to his chest protector….yeah might have been a little spider tack on that ball.

Could you look into it the pitch clock helped or hurt pitchers in the injuries department? Mainly if the injuries were more severe or not.

Kind of unfair to Bieber. He was never accused of using sticky stuff. His pitching has always been predicated on his ability to freeze guys with excellent ball placement. His decrease has always been associated with overuse.

check videos of Greg Maddux, he used Vaseline in his upper lip. Watch as he walks back to the mound after getting a new ball. Licks inside upper lip with tongue, licks fingers applying vaseline, fake wipes fingers on pants, rubs new baseball applying vaseline, gets on mound and 99% of the time throws either a change up or 2 seam fastball. Once you notice, you can almost call all of the pitches in his games before he throws it by following this methodology pitch by pitch. btw the source ??? = his brother Mike ... now he STILL hit his spots extremely well even while cheating

How about instead of doctoring the ball to fit your hand, doctor your hand to fit the ball. i.e. grow the calluses on your hands as much as you can and cut grooves into them? Then again i'd be surprised if that hasnt been tried and determined to be unusable for whatever reason, or already banned. Also, as much as people love trolling Trevor Bauer, the Mickey Mouse thing was dumb. What was the man supposed to do? Call off the pandemic and say "Alright im pitching well, full seasons back on?" Go out and throw the last 2-3 games so he woulidnt win a "tainted season?" Absolute silliness. As much as Shane's 14.2k/9 record wont hold up to scrutiny of an entire season mark vs other seasons, Trevor did play the exact same length of season as everyone he's being compared to for that record.

Call it crazy, but a combo of my own sweat with a little bit of dirt made my hands “sticky” and one time I played barehanded WR/DB in football and I was actually kicked out of the game because they said I was using rosin 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️I’m like ooo shit I can’t ever sweat again then or be near dirt while I’m sweating 😪😪😪I’m like wtf

I have to be an ass I can’t help it. Spider tack wasn’t made for powerlifters, as powerlifters are not allowed to use it in competition, it was made for strongmen, as strongmen lift atlas stones, not powerlifters

@@Cam23 oh no problem, spider tack is hard to research due to how tightly it’s been associated with baseball making it’s origins tough to trace exactly through only browsing browsers. I just literally have OCD and can’t help it, sorry man it was a fantastic video and I can’t wait for before and after steroids on lesser known users.

I even hinted at that when discussing Gerrit Cole via Bauer's comment. 2020 is the year Spider Tack exploded, being used league wide, which is why I can more confidently say they were using it no questions asked. If there's a place where I clearly stated that it wasn't used before 2020, then please inform me. I don't mind being wrong, I just don't get the gripe if I never outright said that

Noting Trevor had pre-tacked balls in NPB that he was quite happy with. MLB experimented with in the AA Southern League last year with good reviews.
