What is the power in preaching? Is it in the preacher’s own preparation and scholarship? If it is, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones argues that they are to be most miserable. In this sermon titled “The Spirit and the Power,” Dr. Lloyd-Jones expounds upon what he believes to be the most important ingredient in preaching: the unction, or power, of the Holy Spirit. Consider the apostles: they had all of the teaching and preparation, but this was not enough. The Holy Spirit must come and give these men power to preach the gospel. In one’s own strength, the preacher is filled with only fear and trembling. He is a weak man; an “earthen vessel.” Dr. Lloyd-Jones tells of a minister who went to bed feeling utterly incapable, and awoke the next morning feeling like a lion ready to preach. What happened? This man was filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. This power in preaching gives the preacher clarity of thought and speech. It gives assurance and confidence in their proclamation of God’s word. This power, however, is not something the preacher can conjure up. It is a gift of God. Unction is something that comes upon, and takes hold of, the preacher. Listen as he encourages his students to pray for this power in their preaching.

I truly believe to have hunger for such teachings, you have the Holy Spirit . The flesh would flee. To have the Almighty to take up residence in a person is unmistakable undeserving .

As a Christian for nearly 50 years, this MLJ sermon is the rarest and most understanding sermon I've ever heard. What he has said has been my personal experience but expect total opposition when you try sharing with fellow Christians. It's far easier to intellectualize the Bible than to do what it says that makes you step out of your comfort zone. The Holy Spirit is totally present but you must surrender yourself. Without self denial and surrender, you will not know what MLJ is actually talking of because you are trying to bypass denial of self and surrender. You can't take any short route. Do as Isa.58 says. Do not seek experience, rather, let the promises come true without self effort. Every word, every sentence of MLJ is totally right and true. As a conservative Presbyterian of 40 years, and even still trying to share this experiences has been very painful and frustrating. How can that which is supremely good not be shared? It's not egotism. It's pure happiness and joy in selflessness. A gift, an empowerment, an enabling that I, nor any surrendered believer will ever be worthy of. I could write 500 pages easily on this but why? We have the Bible, just don't omit and read over the surrender, the fasting to be heard on high.

Offer up to God a period of prayer and FASTING. The fasting part is usually discarded by modern day believers. May I suggest a 3 day fast, only water. Do not seek experience. If you do that, it could lead to self deception. Instead, fast, keep it secret, and go about your daily routines. Then,God who sees in secret, may do something truly remarkable. If it is of God, you will be HUMBLED.
