I first watched this film as a white belt back in 2014, And the second time I watched was as a black belt in 2023. It really rekindled what I first felt doing this for the first time. Thank you Stuart for this masterpiece.

That's funny, I did basically the same thing. Started in 2014 as a white belt and now in 2023 being a black belt, watched this video once more... (although I did watch it once in a while during my years as a colored belt 😉)

I’ve watched this many times over the years. Always been my favorite video on KZfaq. And it always inspired me in BJJ and in living a more grounded, aware life, but I always had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to make something as powerful and immersive as this video. Now years later I’m on my way to becoming a videographer, and this short film is always in the back of my mind. I eventually want to make something as impactful and beautiful as this. Thanks Stu

I've always had an interest in jiu jitsu. I have never practiced martial arts. I remember watching this film with Nick two years ago and I became so inspired to train jiu jitsu but never had the resources to invest in classes. Now two years later I'm watching this film after my first time rolling and after two classes of bjj. I have to say I am over joyed and proud of myself for making this happen. I am very blessed to have this opportunity. Nick is a tremendous inspiration to my training.

Had this thought for a while, and I call it the Theory of Cool: When people do anything at the highest level, it looks cool. Therefore, whenever you're training, try to look cool. It doesn't mean that you're doing it right, but looking uncool probably means that you're doing it wrong. Great to hear a similar sentiment from such a talented, intelligent guy.

Seanie, I'm 35 and training for my brown belt exam which is due in November. Although I practiced different MA's when I was "young" I picked up jiujitsu at later age. I started training 6 to 7 hours a week, lost weight, got fit, stronger, more flexible, etc... It has changed my life too, at this stage I cannot image to NOT do JJ. Next to my wife and son it has a very central role in my life. EVERY day I am busy with JJ, be it training, watching videos, reading books, meditating. Just do it.

I watched this video in 2013 when I was a white belt and it has always stuck with me. I got my purple belt in 2019 right before having a kid and then the whole covid thing. I lost all momentum and have struggled to get back to it. Now all these years later there is so much shame and embarrassment around how out of shape I have become and how bad I will be when I start training again. Hopefully I can start next week, for now rewatching old videos that motivated me when I was starting is really comforting.

Great video, thanks so much. Love your brand. I got my black belt after 10 years of training 5 days a week at the age of 62. I am now 64 years old. I also love and am inspired by your words that you want to be 60 years old and still training, using almost no strength, with timing being everything. Well, those are true words. I am to stupid to quit and so is my 63 year old training partner. We can't quit because then the other will feel lonely. lol. Anyway, if I can give a snap shot into the future for those 30-year olds what it's like at 60, it sucks. We can NOT bang anymore, we can NOT use strength, nor speed, and certainly not athleticism because it does not exist. What does exist is exactly what you said, using almost no strength, with timing being everything. Usually, when the rounds start, I take a defensive position, wait for my younger partners to try and pass, try and sweep and counter everything they do. I might be a new black belt in BJJ, but if they gave rank for defense, I would be a third degree black belt in defense. No joke. its all about defending first, assessing the situation, looking for little weight shifts to take advantage of a sweep, looking for my partners to get frustrated or gassed out trying to whoop on an old black belt for which they can not so easily. Also, as soon as they get a position, no matter what rank, and I feel there is little chance of escape or reversal, I consider that a danger and tap. One time I was training with a 33 year old purple belt and he got a bicep slicer on me and of course I study the defense. However, I was lazy and did not defend in time and felt pressure on my bone and tapped. His mouth dropped, his eyes opened wide and he could not figure out why I tapped. I said at the end of the roll, "sure I might have powered out of that bicep slicer, but better to tap today and train tomorrow than have black belt pride and get hurt and be sidelined for a few weeks." He understood and now there is no fear of me tapping out and no ego because I am still training daily. So in conclusion, thanks for making this great video and love your brand. Allen

I know what you mean I have trained in it for a year and a half and the simplest way to put is that it creates a purpose in life that other martial arts can fail for they focused on self defense and make you forget about the beauty that they were also created for. And Jiu Jistu opens up your entire mind because it's not about who can hit harder or who is bigger, it's like a chess game which makes it such a lovable martial art and a beautiful one for it's not about hurting your opponent badly it's about stopping a conflict without causing as little damage as possible.

foxybrown2 Not necessarily, foxy. I've been practicing jiu jitsu for over 3 years, and most everyone train for the love of the sport, even those of us who also train MMA. Two of our best jiu jitsu practitioners are also amateur MMA fighters, but they keep training in the gi because it's an addiction, and an art that truly helps you learn more about yourself if you let it. Grab a gi and find your local jiu jitsu club -- as frustrating as it is to start, you won't regret it ;) OSS!

incredible, my first ju jitsu teacher once told me that to him ju jitsu was more than just an action, or a contest, or anything physical. To him it was as close to understanding religion as hes ever come. That may not make sense to some people, but to the people who have felt it, they know exactly what he ment.

It took Judos ground game and expanded it tremendously. It's still changing and innovations are happening. Think of it as Judo 85% Throws 15% Ground. BJJ 85% ground and 15% throws. Give ir take your game...

This video is so well done... I've watched it multiple times you've really grasped the concept of BJJ in my eyes. It's an art and something special and I loved hearing your point of view on it

So refreshing to watch and listen to something that embraces the true spirit of martial arts. I for one am fed up up with meatheads and rude, disrespectful people that are now training for 5 minuets of cage fame loosing the real philosophy of Budo!

I didn't know who Nic Gregoriades was until I watched this video; but as a young jiu-jitsu student I hope that someday I can walk in the practice of jiu-jitsu that way, or something isomorphic to it. Wonderful video.
