I think a lot of our generation are feeling nostalgic the last few years and this content mixes nostalgia with a dark and creepy conspiracy theory / horror feeling which is also very popular on youtube! I love it man, that skin theory video was insane!

I think the appeal is that digging deeper into art is fun and interesting, spongebob was made by people who cared, so they hid fun stuff around, and theories is all about finding the hidden fun with the added bonus of making a story out of it Sometimes it means nothing, the artist was just having fun, but art is all about interpretation Basically these theories is what art is all about. Just like how people over analyse paintings

SB-129 freaked me out so badly as a kid. I hated that episode. Same with the kelp forest episode. Always scared me, and it drove me nuts that in the next episode they were back in civilization because I really wanted to see how the heck they escaped and it never occurred to my kid mind that it's just a cartoon and logic doesn't matter. Love the kelp episode nowadays, but the SB-129 I haven't watched in years because it reminds me of my childhood dread that I might freeze, jump into a time machine, and be... I really loved the theory videos you mentioned. My favorite is probably the Goofy Goober Alien Death Cult one. I think because a good theory should do what it does - say something wacky, even borderline insane, and then back it up in a surprising way.

Just a fun fact if you pirate the episode with the Red Mist reference they have all have the original red mist reference before it was changed to the squidward baby diaper thing?? There's a guy on KZfaq with the screen name "Mustard Pregnancy" (yuck!) who cranks out video after video of ridiculous SpongeBob-related theories. His videos are one step above slop. It's obvious that he's merely trying to get one of his videos picked up by the algorithm so it can be viewed millions of times so he can get that sweet, sweet ad revenue. I wish KZfaq's algorithm would stop recommending them to me.
