Finn has stains on his body. One day he meets a group of cool kids with different stains on their bodies and understands that these stains aren't just pretty.
"The Stained Club" is the multi award-winning graduation animation from students at the renowned French animation school Supinfocom Rubika. Dealing with the effects of abuse both physical and emotional, it is both a stirring tribute to childhood, and a warning to not overlook the inherent vulnerability of kids.
French with English and Spanish subtitles available.

The Stained Club
A Film by: Melanie Lopez, Simon Boucly, Marie Ciesielski, Alice Jaunet, Chan-Stéphie Peang, Beatrice Viguier
www.thestainedclub-shortfilm....
"A bittersweet animation that pairs fabulous design with emotional storytelling, The Stained Club is one of the standout animations of the year. A stirring tribute to the boundless imagination of childhood, this theme is intercut with a clear-eyed warning about the physical and psychological vulnerability of this fragile age. So while the film is immensely joyful in moments, it uses the inherent innocence of kids to camouflage the ugliness that can lurk underneath.
The graduation project of six students from the famed French school Supinfocom Rubika, the short 6min film focuses on Finn, a lonely boy who finds camaraderie with a neighborhood gang of "cool kids". Finn's breathless exultation of the unique and awesome qualities of his new friends is infectious, as they play games and cause trouble in the rundown town they inhabit. Finn finds communion with his new friends because they too are "stained"-Finn has an eerie blue, glittery glow that emanates from areas on his skin. He doesn't know why its there, but thinks he recognizes the same in the red and purplish splotches of his friends...
A sort of Amblin-esque homage to childhood is all the rage nowadays, from the breakout success of Stranger Things, to the box-office record setting Stephen King adaptation IT, and it is easy to see some of those same qualities in The Stained Club. This lineage recognizes the inherent trauma of childhood, and externalizes it via fantasy/horror. Finn's supernatural glow serves a similar function, but the trauma here is closer to home. Getting the gang together, and the care-free montages of adventurous play are always fun to experience, but the coming-of-age moment for Finn does not come from some monster, but from his close friend-his loss-of-innocence is the result of the dawning realization that "stains" are not pretty, but are instead shameful. It's a simple, but devastating denouement, that is deeply affecting long after the film's close.
The origin of the film's premise is deeply tied to that trauma. In communications with the team it was related to us that they had,
...stumbled upon a photography project by Angela Strassheim where she took pictures of seemingly perfect American houses where tragic murders had happened before. She revealed the traces of these murders with a special UV light. That made me link it to emotional and psychological pain: we can't see it, but it's there. I wanted to create a story where the character's pain is visible on his skin.
The team's simple hope was to produce a piece that could help audience's take more seriously children's psychological pain, especially the one caused by their very own parents. " - S/W Curator, Jason Sondhi

Another theory is that he hurts himself but he doesn’t understand that that’s a bad thing. The stains glow because he doesn’t understand that isn’t what you do when he feels in pain. But it does revolve around emotional and psychological pain too

Growing up I was emotionally abused. All because I have a learning disability that caused him to call me stupid and yell at me for not knowing the answer which caused me to cry. Since growing up with him I almost came close to wanting to end my life cuz of him and I had a lot of bottled up anger towards him. So much emotional abuse from him caused me to think that I wasn’t very smart, made me feel like I was ugly, I ate a lot of food to fill in my sadness and made me think that no one wanted to be my friend cuz of having a learning disability. When I was a senior in high school I decided one day to loose my weight which I did after all of the junk food I ate. I started to eat healthy and ate less junk food. In 2010 I moved in with my mom after he kicked me out so he would move in with his fiancé. (both of my parents are divorced). My mom could tell how much anger I had towards him and how upset I was that she decided to take me out for a nice walk in the fresh air and talked all the things he did to me. I eventually let all of my anger out and I ended up being all relaxed and was happy after that. Then she told me that if she stayed married to my father she would of been abused by him in a few months since he was starting to be come aggressive to her. If she never divorced him. On my birthday day he always tried to send me “guilt trip” cards cuz he felt bad for what he did to me that he even put cash in them. I’m thinking to myself you cannot buy my love with money like how he was. After I got into an argument with him about Christmas presents and how I was helping my mom pay for rent and bills. I decided to never give him my new phone number because of how arrogant and how stubborn he was years ago. Now I’m older I know that I am very smart but still have a little bit of a hard time learning things and what things mean. My mom even asked me if I wanted my father to be part of my life or if I wanted to ever talk to him again. I said no not after what he did to me.

Each kid represents a different type of abuse Robbie: Physical abuse. This one is the most obvious, he’s covered in bruises and scars throughout his body and is not good with sudden and unexpected physical contact, seen when the narrator jumps on him. He’s also the most aggressive of the four, kids tend to mimic their parents’ behaviour. Joshua: Verbal/emotional abuse. His ear is stained, indicating he hears a lot of yelling, insults, swearing, and other hurtful words and so his ears are hurt to symbolize the mental pain this causes. His glasses might also represent gaslighting/manipulation altering the way he sees things or they could symbolize that the abuse has altered his self image. That might be a stretch though. Connie: Sexual abuse. The way she dresses is the first thing said about her, which makes sense as clothes are a way to cover up the private parts and keep them safe and hidden from others. They represent modesty/chastity. She’s wearing overalls, which are harder to forcefully remove off of someone than pants or a skirt. She is also seen drawing a heart in the window fog. A lot of children who are sexually abused use a ton of hearts in their artwork, it’s a weirdly common theme. Finally, she is seen scrubbing herself with a sponge. Many sexual abuse victims, especially kids, feel “dirty” and try to clean themselves in an attempt to cope with the trauma. Finn: Neglect. This one is pretty self explanatory. His stains are invisible, just like how neglect is often the most invisible and hardest to detect from of abuse. His mom is an addict who sits in front of the TV all day and never gives him attention, she basically pretends he doesn’t exist. He has to make his own meals, which always consist of cereal seen by the boxes littered everywhere because she never cooks and there’s likely nothing else in the kitchen. The house is messy and he’s extremely starved for touch, evidenced by his hopeful expression when his mother places her hand on him. At home he is always alone, even when his mother is right next to him. Edit: Nvm that’s a cock not a heart lol.

Gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous and heartbreaking. My interpretation: the stains of the other children are their wounds from abusive parents, and the children are ashamed of them, which is why Connie tries to hide hers and wash them away. The main little boy, Finn, hurts himself whenever he is upset or feels alone, as seen throughout the short whenever he idly scratches himself. His mother ignores him all the time, and as seen near the end, whenever the pain becomes too intense for him, he hurts himself greatly as a coping mechanism. He does not recognize his actions/stains as "bad" like the stains of his friends, so he sees them as stars. Hence, my friends are different from other people, but they are also different from me. He does not understand that he is hurt just as much as they are.

i see it a bit differently, i think his stains are not him hurting himself, his stains are a visible representation of the neglect/mental abuse he suffers from his alcoholic/possibly depressed mother. (this was stated in the caption too!) thats why in the end he says that his friends are not the same as him, because their ''stains'' (bruises, wounds) come from actual physical abuse (probably domestic abuse), while his stains are not 'real' or typically visible, while both are basically the same in terms of hurt and trauma, usually only the visible, physical abuse is taken seriously. (hope that made sense)

My parents work me to the bone without any compensation or regard for my feelings, pressure me into studying like a Yale student, yell at me for little mistakes, and give me almost no time to myself, which, as an introvert, I really have to have. My only real comforts are shorts and videos like these and my online friends. *Evidence behind Finn having emotional stains:* -The description talks about emotional abuse in addition to physical, but he's the only kid shown to be abused that way -His friends' stains seem to results of physical harm, like bruises, but his aren't physical -Finns' stains are hinted at being seen only by him -He says he scratches himself but *nothing happens,* making it very unlikely to be a result self-harm -There are more stains on him as a result of his Mother's neglect -We see him get more stains when he's on the ground next to his Mom, so any self-harm after that would not be the cause

*I wanna give some clarification:* • his stains that glow are most likely the result of his emotional abuse and neglect from his Mother • whether or not his stains are actually visible to other people is unclear, but I suppose it doesn't matter much since they're real nonetheless • in the scene where the room dissappear and all the stardust particles flow to him is seemingly symbolism of him gaining more stains; they're a result of the way his Mother pushed him away • he scratches himself, but it "never does anything", furthering my confidence that his stains are psychological • the scratches may be related to his glowing stains, however, maybe the scratches are what other people see but he sees them as what they are: a result of emotional abuse; to elaborate I think that he scratches himself as a stress habit, which stems from the abuse he receives from his Mom • the other children are being abused physically and possibly sexually, which is why their stains are more "real"; they're bruises, red marks from being hit, skin irritations, and scars

So my interpretation for this is Main character: emotional abuse because his mother never hurt him and he never has any physical marks the only time we see him get worse is when he was neglected (he said scratching doesn’t do anything) The girl: Sexual abuse what she was drawing in the car window looked like a heart but it could be something else Guy with cape: Physical abuse since he had the cut on him Guy with glasses: I’m not to sure but I think it might also be physical abuse. My interpretation is the club is just a couple abused friends that come to help each other smile while dealing with there different situations of abuse.

This masterpiece touched me deeply. And to everyone who's dealing with any pain, keep on being brave. I love that he still tries to help others, even after how hurt he was. I'm not sure if all the children's wounds were physical though, they were around for a long time. Long enough for Connie to grow her hair that way. It's also... Funny, in a morbid way, that it ends with Robbie throwing a basketball at MC's head. This could've gone a more traditional route of "helping each other makes the stains better!" But... Kids are just kids.
