If I’m being honest, I’ve got involved first in the Kamen Rider franchise all because of the form changes! I kept watching countless videos of the form changes and it never gets old. Also this is my way of distinguishing different forms: 1. Base Form (Basically the main form-) 2. Random Forms (any forms that’s not really a true power up but still gives different powers) 3. Upgrade Form (The first true power up just below Super Form) 4. Super Form (A powerful form with sometimes a better design than the final form-) 5. Final Form (The true ultimate power of each rider’s respective series, outside of movies and other extra contents) 6. Final Episode Form (These I see most prominently during the Reiwa era, although it kinda started with Build’s Rabbit Dragon form. The fully gold and silver form btw not the movie form) 7. Extra Forms (Any forms that are outside of the main series. Movies, video games, manga- you name it)

1:30 I don't have an issue with OOO's combos names honestly, I just choose to pronounce them how they best sound. So I don't pronounse the yellow combo as "Lataratar", but as "Lahtorahta", sounds better.

I like having different combinations like double than multiple forms.

W and OOO are my favorites because the form changes are at that perfect middle ground of "versatile but limited" where you can see them be used in interesting and creative ways and there isn't a deluge of forms such that they get lost in the wash. Small moments like when Ankh throws Eiji the Rhino, Eel and Hopper medals and he's like, "Huh?" but when he combines them to get a powerful leaping headbutt attack he's like, "Oh, that's why" - the cinematography didn't really draw much attention to that moment but adds so much to selling the form change as a fun idea. I think the span from Den-O to Wizard was a sort of "golden age of form changes" because every Rider utilized their changes regularly and they were distinct, with enough to have variety but also not so many such that you just forget most of the forms exist. Zero One has the same number of "core" form changes as OOO but since they're only really used in the first segment of the series it's easy to forget them whereas OOO you can remember each form and even what each medal specifically does since they're used throughout the entire show and even the final form is something that the writing emphasizes, "Do not use this unless you have to." One of the issues I think that Gaim onwards has is that the introduction of a "quarter 1 form" and sometimes even a "completed quarter 1 form" in addition to a super and final form can easily cause the main form changes to become overlooked, because the writing tends to favor having the Rider use what is his current strongest form. It basically means that for each stage you're only going to get about 12 episodes with it, and for the main form changes that means you get maybe one debut episode before they're discarded for most of the series. Gotchard actually has directly addressed this by making Chemies integrated in most of the stages of upgrades, with Fire, Platinum and Rainbow all integrating different uses for the Chemies to keep them relevant within the context of the fight choreography.

W's combination is explained in the opening, silly! W-B-X! Futari no *body and soul* Shotaro's memories represents the body (fighting style), Philip's the soul (strategic approach). As to why is it called Joker, it's meant to represent the idea of the wild card, being able to adjust oneself to any demanding situation. Yes it's kind of a reach, but the idea is Joker represents the peak of human performance. The Joker memory unlocks a human's full potential, which is somewhat poetic that in a series where humans are using Gaia memories to become less human, W embraces humanity and unlock its full potential... Until they realize they can take up arms and just shoot the baddies down with Trigger of course

I might be biassed, but i kinda miss how special form changing is to the series itself. Yes, we still had that but nowadays whenever a Rider gained a new form or power up it mostly treat as throwaway and wa get without any form of stuggle what so ever (mostly due to how the form being attained by having side character throw a new power up items to the main character like it was a lottery ticket), the only time it was felt special is when the rider attain their super form & final form. As a result, most of the form debut in modern season didn't really felt that grandioses and instead just felt "Oh, he got a new form, ok😒😒" This is one thing i like about the earlier heisei season. Because aside from Kuuga, Den-O, Kiva, & to extent Agito a lot of the riders in this season only had two or three form with mostly comprise of the Base, Super, & Final form itself complete with their own personal struggle themselve. So whenever a rider get a new form, it felt truly special (Kuuga in particular despite having the most form in early heisei next to Den-O. Most of the form felt special, because unlike the modern riders, Godai had to train day & night while learning new skill to gain each of his form capabilities)

Idk what it's called but I'm obsessed with the "supposed to be final form" form. The final form that they would have without much miracle or shenanigans. Like how Shining Hopper was developed alongside the driver, Ex Aid Level 5 was the highest level to unlock before Emu or Kuroto create new Gashat with unconventional method, Saber use three wonder ride book as all the next forms are created out of miracle or forbidden, Gotchard X is technically the highest he can go since 10 is the highest and in order to get to next form he literally either go to the past or suffer. Revice Volcano Rex was the final form that George intended for Revice before his dad comes into the picture

You give me a samurai-themed form, be it base form or any kind of alternate form, and I'm all over it like butter. Even Gotchard's Appareskebow is aces with me, and I've not been happy with most of Gotchard. That being said, I know people will leap on the idea that form changes are just Badai's way of trying to get money, but I think people forget that there is an economic element as well. These form changes really represent the state of Japan's economy. I doubt they could continue to pump dozens of form changes if they weren't selling or if the people at Bandai weren't convinced they could sell well. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure budget and economic limitations are one of the bigger reasons why we didn't see as many form changes in the later half of Showa and a subdued amount in the earlier half of Heisei. In a way, I think Heisei might've had the right idea. Shows like Gotchard and Ex-Aid had so many form changes that it's easy for some fans to forget about some of them, and that's not a good thing. When the fans are taking the form changes for granted, they stop being something special. I would love to see a Reiwa Rider that dials it back a little bit so that fans can appreciate the few form changes that do appear. Some Riders, like Kuuga, had different forms for specific purposes. Dragon Form was about increased agility, Pegasus was for ranged attacks, Titan was for durability and sword fighting, and Mighty was a well balanced standard form. It would be great to see more of these purpose-driven forms rather than just a bunch of random forms thrown in just because Bandai said so.

I kind of hope with the chip swords, they break after a couple hits, leading him to having to use his armor to “reload” the swords

My Favourite Form Changes would be Wizard,Gaim,and Kuuga.

I always looked at the final forms as the battlizers of kamen rider.

For Toei, there’s only base form work as layer to access other form, main form or basic form which they advertised vs upgrade form. Some basic form work as base form too like zero one rising hopper vs saber vs revice as example. Tho, in some series like Den-0 vs Geats, base form only appear as pre-form (plat form vs entry form). Despite that Geats known for his Boost Magnum. So depend on series, we can identify which is base form and which is basic form and which form can be upgrade further on. Still, i think Toei is too complicate to seperate these two, cause some base form only appear very weak or very few time.

Isn't stronger upgrade considered as first "final form" My favorite final forms are mostly from heisei phase 1

7:34 i would say those three Gaia Memory on Shotaro's side are for W's combat style. With Joker being close ranged combat style, Metal being a weaponized close ranged combat style, while Trigger is just self explanatory of itself providing W with a gun. That my take on that

i really did think that OOO did it best, not only with its cool system where you could swap put the parts, and the full combos. but with how the story played with the whole gimmick, having OOO constantly gain and lose medals as the story went on, constantly changing what combos and forms he had acsess to at any given time, which forced some fun creativity into the series.

Back when the tv ratings matters more than toy sales. The broadcast time was during prime time too. Stronger and skyrider did receive an upgrade later. Bio rider powers is whatever the writer want it to be. Like wizard story, it’s forms is kind of bland and repetitive unlike kuuga. Maybe the kind of cgi it used blend them all together. On the other hand, a lot of kuuga still hold up especially if you remake the suit.
