In today's video, we'll be discussing the 2009 Star Wars road trip comedy "Fanboys" and it's battle against Harvey Weinstein.
The first script for "Fanboys" was written by Ernest Cline (Ready Player One, Armada) in 1997. The film focuses on four friends who are journeying to skywalker ranch to steal a print of "Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace", so that they can watch it before their friend passes away from cancer. The film was re-written by Dan Pulick and Adam F. Goldberg (The Goldbergs), and eventually picked up by Trigger Street (Kevin Spacey). The Weinstein Company distributed the film, which led to issues that prevented the movie from being released. Harvey Weinstein forced reshoots with two different directors (scott mosier and steven brill). The cancer subplot of the movie was nearly removed, but after fan backlash it was left in the movie. Harvey Weinstein buried and sabotaged the film by giving it a limited release, and almost no advertising of any kind.

Star Wars fan from 1977 and this film was fantastic. I think most Star Wars fans feel about Fanboys much in the way that Star Trek fans feel about Galaxy Quest, both are nothing but love letters to both the properties and the fandom.

As someone who was pretty much a carbon copy of these guys, the first prequel came out a week before my 18th birthday, I have to say they captured the Wars/Trek animosity of the period beautifully. In the years since the prequels, the barrier between Wars and Trek fans has been mostly broken down, but in the 80s and 90s especially while TNG was airing, the feud was bitter. I had one friend that was a fan of both, but the rest of my social circle growing up were all die hard Wars fans.

Thanks for making this. I was actually part of the whole Stop Darth Weinstein thing. But as a Chris Marquette fan. We were probably even more pissed off that they were ruining his story arc than even the Star Wars fans, but we made tons of friends in that fandom. We started a website for Chris in 2006, so were literally on the ground floor of the movement. We might have been one of the first websites to report the reshoots, which we learned about from our online SW friends who had been extras on the original shoot and got called back for reshoots because they were cosplayers who had loaned their memorabilia to the shoot. We met Chris, Kyle and Adam in 2006 in Atlanta on the eventually canceled Revenge of The Nerds reboot attempt. They were great guys and we just wanted to help Fanboys stay true to it's original vision. What a crazy time. We still wish we could see that original Kyle Newman Directors Cut!

OG Star Wars fan here, and I think Fanboys works especially well for us. I mean, the characters in the movie are OG fans, (or at least younger siblings of OG fans), and the lore and iconography they are into are obviously from the OG trilogy, (or as we like to call it - ”the real thing”), since the movie takes place before there were prequels. For me it’s an absolutely hilarious movie, although it also has heart and dares to be serious too, without hamming it up. It’s brilliant actually. Thanks for the reminder, and now I’m off to rewatch it. The scene I always remember is when Hutch thinks he got lucky with a girl, who in actuality is a prostitute, and he admonishes his friend to leave him alone: ”Dude, the force is strong with me here”. A true nerd, down to his underwear.

Wound up watching it multiple times in a row- an honor only reserved for the best of the best. Lol Glad they kept the cancer plotline in too- that was the heart of the film for sure. I remember when I saw the trailer for this movie back in late 2008 or early 2009. I was waiting for it to be released but.... it never made it to my country (Mexico). I was heartbroken. Until one day I found it in a.... pirated dvd's street vendor tent. Sorry, it was my only chance to watch it, so I bought it for $15 pesos back in the day (for about $1 dollar). I saw it that same afternoon and I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was a dvd rip from an original dvd, not shot on a cheap camera at a movie theater with horrible subtitles on it, I saw it in a high quality format and I loved the film. I still own that pirated dvd despite that thanks to Amazon I got to buy it on Blu Ray for 10 dlls. It is one of my favorite comedies ever, because what Ernest Cline did is to reflect how friendships that have strong bonds do work. I got to show this movie to my closest friends during movie night and they were able to tell who in the group was reflected in the movie. They loved it and I was surprised they never heard about it before I showed it to them despite being hardcore STAR WARS fans as myself.

Its funny, but I've always thought this felt like a 'Kevin Smith' movie. Now, hearing about how the very first version was made/funded ( a lot like how Kevin did 'Clerks') the similarities are even stronger. Edit: Made this comment before coming across the part where Smith and Jay make a cameo (Been a long while since I first saw it, so I forgot.......think I'll watch it again tonight 😄) Finally: I'm old enough to be one of those 'original trilogy' guy, and I loved it. Kind of reminded me of my own group of friends (some of which we have also sadly lost), except we all hung on to our love of Star Wars (and all things geek) until it became Cool with Everyone, it seems 😅

The only reason I ever even discovered this movie was because in the very early 2010s I saw it sitting in the comedy section of Blockbuster and the cover stuck out to me so I rented it and loved it, I always wondered why more people didn’t know about this movie or why it wasn’t talked about but it explains a lot with knowing that Harvey Weinstein was behind the release of the movie, I do remember it had a small resurgence back in 2015 when the Force Awakens came out and a fan of Star Wars wasn’t going to live to see it on the big screen so Disney let him see it 2 months before its release

I was so bummed back then that it didn't get a theatrical release in my country. I would have had to travel six hours to Denmark, and when it was time for my vacation to visit my Danish Star Wars-friends, it had already stopped showing there. I eventually got it on DVD.

I am from NJ and back in the 1990's, my friend Eric and I were on a list for Miramax test screenings. I got the opportunity to sit directly in front of Harvey Weinstein as we watched David Schwimmer in The Pallbearer. It was a film not particularly liked by the audience (my thumb was down) and Harvey was not pleased. I also saw Beautiful Girls with him. That was a very positive test screening and he was all smiles afterwards (my thumb was way up for that one). I think he thought, out of the two films, Girls would've been the hit. It should have been. Both films bombed at the box office, however, but neither film was changed all that much. I was half expecting Harvey Scissorheads to have a field day with The Pallbearer, but no such luck. In fact, more scenes were cut from Beautiful Girls than they were from The Pallbearer. Go figure.

Great video! Thank you! I LOVE this movie, and only heard about it through an Amazon recommendation when it had just been released on DVD in the UK. So glad to know it was also a thorn in petulant little Pervy Weinstein's side and a blow to his fragile ego, too! And now I love it even more. Reminds me of when American studios tried to adapt Jon Cleese & Connie Booth's "Fawlty Towers" and Terry Pratchett's "Mort." They wanted to leave out Basil Fawlty and Death, respectively, because they're "too negative." They're the central frigging characters. Heh. I used to live in Ohio, and once went to Ashland on a road trip with a friend of mine (Hi, Carl!) to see if we could find the rumoured (and rare, and delayed) Wal-Mart-exclusive POTF2 Max Rebo / Doda Bodonawieedo 2-Pack, which was supposed to have been spotted there. (We didn't find them, but we managed to get a set each when I found them at a store much nearer home a month or so later.)

I first saw "Fanboys" in early 2011 while I was hanging out with a friend of mine who was house-sitting. She told me that she'd just seen a movie that she had never heard of and after her initial viewing knew I would love it. Not even 5 mins into the opening I was hooked. Since my introduction to the film I've met countless individuals who had barely seen/heard or read anything about it's production and eventual release or nothing at all. It's a shame that it had to endure all the behind the scenes drama cause it's a fantastic movie and a true love letter to George Lucas films/products.

Not gonna lie about it... I found this movie on DVD in Walmart's $5 bin, picked it up and read the back. Just from that alone, I got excited and put it in my cart. I was shocked with the movie. It wasn't just "good", it was AMAZING! I was 10 years old when Star Wars hit theaters in 1977, and these guys weren't much younger than I was when Episode I came out. Maybe 7-8 years, which, once you hit 30, isn't that much at all. I was 32 when Phantom Menace came out, but I was just as excited as the kids who had only seen Star Wars on the television screen. Maybe more so, because I knew what it was like seeing a Star Wars movie on the big screen. But anyway, I loved Fanboys on my first viewing. But also, because I still have the "Original Theatrical Versions" of the Original Trilogy, whenever I do a Star Wars marathon, I watch those first, then Fanboys because that's where it sits in the timeline (before Episode I is released), then go chronologically from there. So, in my eyes, a TRUE Star Wars fan have Fanboys as part of their Star Wars marathons. I also try to "word of mouth" the movie to anyone who hasn't heard of it, and give it high praise as a movie, without spoiling the cameos, and especially that cancer sub-plot. Which, really makes the movie go from "good fun" to "what a great movie!" Because it's not overly focused on, but you get a "nudging reminder" of it a few times throughout the movie. It's just done right.

You should hear what Weinstein did with Escape From Planet Earth, honestly it was ridiculous. He kept demanding rewrites then got pissed stuff he demanded to be removed wasn’t in newer drafts and this wasn’t just a situation of “oh put that thing from draft 2 in draft 3” no this was “put that thing from draft 4 in draft 16” it was that much of a mess, Weinstein also apparently demanded certain castings then went back on them near instantly to the point where Kevin Bacon got cast in the movie, paid then was removed within the span of a few days and before he could even record lines. Then to add insult to injury when they did a private screening for Weinstein to see the movie he decided eating M&M’s was more important than giving his thoughts on the movie he’d been actively sabotaging

Man, that Weinstein fellow sounds awful. This is probably the worst thing he has ever done. Wonder what he’s doing now.

He is a diabetic and one time, he was screening a film and was eating m&ms but he was not supposed to eat them so they took them from his hands. Then he took them back but he spilled them on the floor trying to eat them

I remember seeing this in a very empty theater when it came out and liked it well enough. Revisited it when I was on a Seth Rogen kick recently, and my god, what a turd. “Characters you want to hang out with” may have been the goal, but they failed horribly. Almost all the characters come off like those stereotypical nerds that make you ashamed to share interests with. I was not at all shocked to later see that the director is one of those very people in real life with his whole, “critics were paid to like the Last Jedi” quotes. And that’s what these guys feel like. Not charming nerds like Randal in Clerks, but ones you wanna stuff in a locker. Harvey is clearly the worst. But it’s hard to feel too much for this when good ol’ “Harvey Scissorhands” messed with better movies by better filmmakers.

I am an original Star Wars fan…. How original? I was at the Chinese theater for the world premier. I’m 64 years old and love it just as much as I did in 1977 ( with the exception of the final 3 movies🤮. My house could practically double as a set. Having said that, I had somehow managed to miss the theatrical release of Fan Boys but caught it on its video release. It is very much one of my fav movies.

I loved this movie. The cast was spectacular. Every single one of them. And where I fell in love with Kristen Bell. Or was it Veronica Mars where that happened first. Point is, Kristen Bell is spectacular.

So all Weinstein did trying to screw the movie over (cutting the cancer storyline, ordering re-shoots, only to give up in the end but still giving a 3 day mark to edit the movie which is fucking insane and limiting the screens plays to only 44 theaters), was make FanBoys a cult classic. "If the fans really want this film, then they'll come out and support it" he said. And the fanboys did.
