Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has a long history of censoring anything controversial, from criticism of the Iraq War to critics of that criticism. Over the past year, RPI continued that tradition, working (literally) day and night to censor students. The target? Students who criticized what they perceive to be RPI administrators’ attempts to take over the Rensselaer Union - an organization and facility that has been independently operated by RPI students for over a century.
What do RPI students and faculty make of the administration’s repeated attacks on free speech? Watch our documentary to find out, and join the students in demanding that the RPI administration respect free speech rights on campus.

I'm an alum, class of 1983. I've been aware of the administration's attempt to take over the Union for several years and to be listed as a school that does not encourage free expression saddens and sickens me. The very nature of a college, especially one dedicated to the sciences and engineering, is supposed to encourage the free and open expression of ideas and opinions. I hope that with the new Administration there will be an increased focus on better and more open Communications with the community.

I was there in the 1990s and in student senate. The administration really brainwashed students on senate into believing that raising tuition sky high was a 'good thing'.

That was inappropriate conduct from the college adminstration and an effective strategy to discourage future donations from future alumni.

Wow! My graduate alma mater sure turned into a fascist dictatorship after I left in 2000... I see this video is 5 years old. I'd really hate to see what happened there in 2000 with the covid insanity...

As Shirley Jackson is no longer the president of RPI, hopefully things will start to get better....her reign of terror is finally over, but the effects are still there.

I remember when the 'queen' became president and came to a new graduate student wine reception in 1999 where I was in my 5th and last year of graduate school. I got trashed of the free wine and made a bunch of noise mocking her while she was giving her address. I hope it annoyed her!

I went into another private business and started crying about systemic oppression. They kicked me out. . . Those Applebees hostesses are tougher than they look.

A private university doing everything they can not to become Evergreen. Good for them.

It's not when the board is trying to control students' life on campus. President Shirley Jackson was a dyed in the wool Democrat who Bill Clinton or Al Gore was considering for a cabinet position.
