I got my first gaming laptop for school 2 years ago and upgraded to a Desktop just last year! Since then all my friends have been building their own pcs and it has been amazing playing all new games with them since we used to be PlayStation kids!

Best advice: Never put the last panel of the case without making sure it boots at least once, it a curse and that's the only way to avoid it.

I game on a TV as well, but its a 42" LG C2 OLED. I'm mostly a single player casual gamer. Like you, I usually use a controller. I only use a keyboard and mouse for the rare times I play a competitive FPS game.

I absolutely adore this channel. The fact that it’s just you on the camera, honest thoughts, interesting topics, and real stories makes you a go to channel for me to watch Jake. I know a lot of others already feel this way, and just wanted to express that myself. Good vid as always.

I'm so happy to see a video like this. I'm 30 and I've had my first ever medium-entry gaming PC since last November. I also entered the gaming scene quite late (first gaming platform I had was the PS3) and would maybe play about two to three games every few months due to the price. Since I've had my PC, and thanks to Steam, I've been able to thoroughly dive into a medium I've had a passion for.

Gen X gamer here, your history break down is spot on. My highest, deep in the rabbit hole time was 2005-2012, most of the stuff I had to do then, as far as case modding, especially with water cooling, all had to be done by hand, with a Dremel. The market today, pretty much took all those things we did then and just made every case, even the cheapest $50 cases, have tons of fan and cooling options. Also the hardware now, it's just a massive wall of new hardware shoved at you rapidly, I almost feel bad for new PC builders, on one had, they have so many options but also on the other hand, it's a fast moving wide river. It's just crazy to me, seeing people with their first builds, being RTX 3080's etc. I had to literally cut my self on a overpriced gateway P3 that was wouldn't' do much more than write college papers. I had to buy an expense (compared to owning a PS2 at the time) video card, just to play any game. My advice, in additional to your good advice. Find a friend, anyone that really knows what they are doing to help you. Build it with them. Most people including myself, enjoy building an teaching others. Once you get your feet wet, try not to fall down the PC hardware rabbit hole, it never ends. PC's are great...so are consoles, each have their uses but after you buld your first PC, you likely won't head back to a console. Agree with the windows, I hate it but it runs everything, although Linux is creeping up on them for gaming. Steam deck owner also, so it's good to see how well Linux handles straight gaming.

I'm confused, you keep saying 4090 but the spec sheet says 4080. Either way, the specs look great, that much ram is absurd and I love it. You should turn your old rig into a home server/nas, you can use it to run stuff like home assistant for smart home things, and pihole to block ads on your network. Tons of other awesome services as well you can get set up, its honestly the best way I utilize old hardware. Truenas is what ive been using and its been great so far, though does take some technical knowhow as well as using a search engine to find guides, but its worth the effort

What a trip seeing Limewire! My brother still has about 30 hours of music he downloaded from Napster. Mostly long versions or rare cuts of songs.

Oh. If you game on the couch, the keyboard I use and love is the Logitech G915 TKL Tenkeyless Lightspeed. Almost never have to charge it, it's fairly light, and it works and feels fantastic.

Im 33. I was a console gamer for GameCube, Wii, PS2, Xbox 360, and Xbox one. I became a PC gamer at age 28, 2018-ish. And I can say consoles are obsolete. The console wars only hurt the consumer. Modern consoles are still advertising 30 FPS max? My PC can play any game, and is a 4k conduit to any streaming service.

Great video. It brings up great memories of builds I have done. First one was in the late 90's. I worked so many kinds of odd jobs for neighbours etc. to get enough cash to purchase all the hardware. My latest and a little painful build was last year while stuck at home recovering after dislocating and breaking my right arm. My best build yet albeit not the best hardware anymore, a 3090 Ti Founders, with a i9 processor. Good times. Thanks again for the video.

Been dealing with PC's since the late 80's and started building my own back in the 90's. So many changes over the years but I still get the same fun energy and satisfaction building them even today (and helping my daughter build out her own). Good to see your vibes and mindset man. Also, I remember Falcon Northwest from way back when the started in the 90's and had no idea they were still in business. They always were aspirational to me and I'm glad they're still kicking around!

My parents bought me a gaming PC for my birthday in 1996. It's been an obsession since that day. When I was in trouble, they sent me outside after that. Haha. I'm a full-fledged gamer and collector now. It is one of the best hobbies around, in my opinion.

I built my first dedicated gaming PC back in 2017. It had an Intel i7700k and GTX 1080 ti, along with an RGB AIO and all that jazz. It was a monster machine at the time, which to me meant a lot because growing up I was never able to afford something like it. Switched to SFF a while back, and while I liked the extra space on my desk, I thorougly did not enjoy building it. So fast forward to yesterday, I had all parts ordered and delivered for a build in the Fractal Design North. Took me pretty much the entire day, taking great care with cable management, and now it's finished - humming along right next to me. I'm immensily proud of it. It looks great, it's very quiet and the performance is quite mind-blowing compared to my first build. I think, for me PC building can bring a fantastic sense of accomplishment. Doing the research, choosing parts, putting it all together and hearing those fans spin up for the first time is just an amazing feeling. You did the work and now you can enjoy the fruits of your labor for countless hours to come :)

Thanks for sharing your experience with PC building and gaming. You're right about going slow and being patient because it took me THREE days to build my first ever gaming PC. I knew how to install the hardware as that seemed obvious based on the shapes of certain slots and whatnot. What I struggled with was determining which wires I actually needed from the motherboard and PSU and where to plug them. It was a miracle that someone on Reddit helped me figure out how to daisy chain the wires needed for my LED fans to actually light up, whereas in my initial attempt to install them, I only had them running for their sole purpose of distributing and redistributing air. ANYWAYS...I don't think I'll ever do it again though. At least not from scratch. I'm proud of the hard work I put into it and accomplishing such a task, but if I were to upgrade an entire system from scratch, I'd rather have someone build it better than I did mine because yikes my wire management is so horrible, but at least it has been working for a whole year now of complete gaming and creating bliss now. I'd probably, at best, swap new parts in and out throughout the next few years, especially a new GPU when I can afford an upgrade. The one I'm using now was saved from a previous prebuilt retail PC that I Frankenstein'd into something decent with a GPU upgrade. So it was nice to save quite a bit with that!

I'm a dude in his mid-30s now and didn't really get into PC gaming until the past couple of years due to to cost and space. Living in cramped apartments and working remotely pushed me into going with a laptop that can do it all. Building a PC is cheaper and far more upgradable, but if you need to go the laptop route, it's become a surprisingly good option! For anyone who has any interest in PC gaming, listen to this man. It's a ton of fun and the community is fantastic.

Really enjoyed the video :) I built my first pc a few years ago and struggled to get fully into it because of the issues with windows and other software quirks my pc had. I picked up a steam deck last year along with a docking station and it is a blast! :)

One of my favorite memories as a kid. Getting to build my PC with my uncle. Honestly didn't really know what i was doing at the time, basically just getting to scew a few boards in/connect a few wires, but it still felt pretty dang cool at the time.

Sir, that is a wee beast of a PC. I got a pc a few years back (nothing big, 2080 etc…), first one in since forever. Scary at first, and a bit of a learning curve.

I'm a very vanilla PC gamer. I bought an Acer Predator with an RTX 2080 Super a couple of years ago for half price, and it is the best item I've ever bought for myself. It still plays most new games with high graphics settings and good framerates, and I can slip it in my backpack and take it with me just about anywhere. I'm using it to work from home today. For me it's like a console. It's a nightmare to upgrade (flipped motherboard) so the only "upgrade" it's ever had is an external SSD enclosure connected through the Thunderbolt port. When the time comes, I'll get a new gaming laptop. But for now, I'm perfectly happy with my low-maintenance, upper-mid performance, highly portable gaming setup.

Jake, I needed to hear this. I'm currently building a new PC right now... I'm taking a break in between screwing stuff in and try not to screw up. Last PC I built was 12 years ago RTX 970, now I'm building a RX 7800 XT. I purchased a whole bunch of parts, putting them together and finding out I need more parts lol compatibility hell.

Growing up in Maryland my dad took me to the computer trade shows in and around Baltimore. I was immediately hooked when Wolfenstein and Doom debuted, which made me realize my potential as I wound up working in IT as my career. I so miss building PCs in the 90s as a kid and teenager. Was an absolute blast and learned so much.

This is my favourite channel, well this and Gameranx. Falcon and Jake are just so relatable. My PC journey started with a 386, upgraded to 486 which got me into GTA, had to upgrade to Pentium 1 when GTA2 came around, then Pentium 2 to run GTA 3, and the rest is history. Hell I even had a 286 with a dot matrix screen, got fed-up of old uncles PC's and Library.

I just got the AOKZOE a2 handheld PC and it's really nice to have access to a lot of games I didn't. And also all the mods and hacks for classic games is so much fun. Currently playing through FFVII with a bunch of mods, and it's like a brand new game.

I’ve been considering building a PC for the first time in over a decade (mostly a Mac user), and love the small form factor (limited space 😬). When you do repurpose your old machine, I’d really appreciate a revisit on the build and what you intend to do with it. I’m thinking of turning my old PC into a server. Love the content Jake - keep it up!

I built my 1st PC in 1990 and I used a advertiser heavy magazine Computer Shopper. Back then, you had to insert individual RAM chips and my motherboard with the one of the Bios Chips inserted backwards. It was a nightmare. It also prepared me to work on all the other builds that were easy compared to that first one. One good thing was that first build used Dos 3.3. Still have fond memories of the command line.

Just upgraded from 2080Ti to 4070Ti. Feels good. Can’t wait to test Horizon Forbidden West later this month.

hey Got myself an asus azoth wireless keyboard in white and i gotta say. i am thoroughly impressed. highly recommend since i also play on the couch in my living room. I've been playing mc and helldivers with it and battlebit. threw some white pudding key caps on the white version for extra glow. its even got a display and comes with all switches pre-lubed, extra switches, lube and brush, key and switch pullers, and its all hot swappable.

Bought my first laptop when I got my first good paying summer job back in high school and gamed on that thing a lot. Then decided to build my own a few years later in 2014 and it was nerve racking but so much fun! Still, I prefer console because it’s more chill and to the point and I don’t have the place for a PC desk corner anymore, so my PC is connected to my OLED. But I kinda miss gaming on a monitor. I'm relatively new to gameranx and your channel and gaming as a whole, my older sister was the gamer in the family so for the longest time I thought I couldn't play or games weren't for me. I think the game that opened me up to gaming was The Sims and then most recently it was Subnautica. I think you and I are in the same generation based on how you talked about PC accessibility, my dad was active duty military and he couldn't afford a computer but I wanted one so badly, he was able to get a used one and the interface was super old...like green font on black background old. But I was elated, he wasn't able to buy a computer brand new until after he retired from the military and worked security for Gateway, he got an employee discount and Sims was the free game that came with it. I know I'm rambling myself but when it's something you love, you can talk for days and I love seeing your enthusiasm, I'm sorry you felt like you had to apologize for the "flex" even though it didn't seem like bragging to me. Everyone will get what they need when they need it, it may not be when they want it, but the universe always has a way. Thanks for sharing!

Great video about PC gaming and your experiences with it! Your Falcon PC looks dope af. Cheers, my dude. I was a gamer first but it wasn't long before I would fall in love with the tech. I had my first gaming PC back 10 years ago! It was an ITX rig with an i5 4460 and a GTX 760, the shop built it for me. I remember playing the OG Mass Effect 2 on it that first year! Fast forward to 2019, I decided to finally build one myself (R5 2600 + RTX 2060) and man, I have found that the pursuit of PC building more rewarding to me vs. actually playing games! It's the planning, the research, the hunt for parts - the actual assembly, and the reward of a fully functioning system. To date, I think I've built >30 systems for family and friends since then, and it feels like I've got so much more to learn (haven't even dabbled in custom loops yet). Maybe for my next major upgrade? P.S. Oh and the Ghost S1 case is by Louqe (pronounced Loki) and my main rig currently lives in one!

Hey Jake! This year there are a bunch of very tasty OLED high frame-rate 4K monitors coming out in the 800 to 1300 dollars price range (also some 1440p VERY high frame-rate new OLEDs are interesting, if you're a competitive multiplayer guy). I thought that might be something to keep into consideration, for someone who has the luxury of playing on a 4090. Thanks for your videos!

I have a tiny build like the one you showed, but mine has a 4090 and a 7950X3D. It also runs great with no temp or power issues. It’s surprisingly quiet too unless you are benchmarking or something similar. It’s crazy how power you can squeeze into ITX cases while keeping it stable.

Apart from playing Star Trek Armada as a kid, I got into PC gaming when my friend gave me a system with a 4930k and GTX 1060 back in 2020. A few months later, I built my first pc with a 5900x and 3090. I upgraded a couple months ago to a 14700k and 4090, and that should be enough for me for a while. I'm running everything at 4K 120hz, and won't need more than that for years.

1:43 this is my story exactly! Busted my family Compaq Presario and learned how to put a GeForce 2 (or something) in it from Comp USA. Mom and dad trusted me to open the multi thousand dollar computer and install the part in and I never looked back since.

i was so happy when i used my old pc case and monitor for my new pc build. i thought i couldn't do it, i thought it wouldn't be possible. but i did. i'm so glad for myself

building a SFFPC as my first pc was such an accomplishment for me, I love my nr200p. perfect middle of the road 1440 build has treated me like a king.

Gotta build it yourself to really appreciate it. The experience will allow you to become more knowledgeable about installing and setting up the software to fit your personal gaming experience. I watched a lot of KZfaq videos, then got the confidence to do it.

Love the vid! Most of us PC gamers are actually quite chill. We're not as vocal as the jerks but we're here to help if need be! My tips for building a PC: Be patient, these are fairly senstive parts and you don't want to be rushing, banging and otherwise jamming things into things. Don't baby your stuff either, of course be careful but most PC parts are built now a days with safe guards so it's recommended to wear an anti static braslet but not required (unless you're on carpet, but please never build on carpet) don't worry about putting too much thermal paste (in moderation) and don't worry too hard on cable managment, nothing will short and even though it will help later if you do, not required. If your PC doesn't automaticlly boot on first go, leave it on for a few minutes and maybe it'll boot. Some newly built PCs need a second to wake up so to speak. Also magnetic screw drivers! GOD SEND!!!

Super-timely video, I just built my first ever PC in January. I went with a fairly modest mid-range build (Ryzen 5 7600 and Radeon RX 6700XT). I wasn't necessarily on a tight budget, I just felt that if I was going to accidentally brick something out of the gate, it shouldn't be a $1500 GPU 😅 I also wanted some headroom so I could do lots of upgrading and tweaking in the future, since, like you said, I found the actual planning and building of the thing to be the most rewarding part. That being said, firing up Forza Horizon 5 at max settings for the first time was definitely still a major highlight, lol. Anyway, I agree it's an absolute ton of fun and very rewarding to see it completed, and even a n00b like me got it working without any major hurdles. The only problem with PC building as a hobby is that once the build was done, I just wanted to do another (and seeing your mini-iTX build only further intensified that feeling, thanks for that...)

I got a prebuild during covid 2020 with a rtx 2070 things still going strong!

Another fan here, built my own a few years ago, recently upgraded. I also hate windows, I am not a programmer or tech-head but I went the route of linux and have never looked back. I can run all my games just fine, steam and the proton overlay (chef's kiss), and my OS is so much easier to interact with, even if I have to occasionally do some deep diving.

When I got my 3070 the first game I played was Control with the ray tracing features and that game was such visual eye candy for me. Absolutely lovveee the art style in that game

I've given up playing pc on my desk. SFF all the way! A4h20 with my 4090 hooked up to my 80" C1, with sorround audio but added bt functionality to hhok up my dac with my 64 Audio A12T for couch gaming perfection ✨

That case is pronounced Loki, like the trickster. That's a nice case you have there, Jake. I recently went the other way around from full sized, to SFF mini ITX. Crammed a 4080 Super FE into mine and no issues at all with temps or performance.

I'd say start with prebuilt and then use the upgrade process to help ease into the "building process". That's what I've done and DON'T get an Alienware of any kind! NZXT is solid price wise and you can choose the components you want. If you would prefer to build they also have a DIY setup where you pick from a range of pre selected rigs and they ship them to you for you to assemble the rig yourself. It comes with a detailed picture book with instructions to guide you through the process, as well the tools you'll need.

I was always a console player until about 2014. I discovered PC and that was a wrap. Been a PC only guy since then. Now with all PS games coming to PC I’ll always be a PC guy. Once a PC gamer always a PC gamer. It’s the best way to play. Hands down.

When I was a kid, I was a PC gamer all the way. Age of Empires I & II, Civilization, Myst, Pharaoh, etc were my jam. But I also always had consoles, I've owned every single Playstation. I guess I'm a double agent in the PC master race.

I've only ever built one pc, so I dint have many recommendations on what's good, I only know my specific parts. But, I do know the feeling of building a pc and getting to see just hiw good games can look. Going from ot ps5 to my pc was massive! All That to say that I'm happy for you! I know youll enjoy it

My first PC built was in the early 93 it was a intel pentium 150Mhz with 16mb of memory. I loved that PC to death.

I’m upgrading my first PC this weekend with my dad as a father son bonding thing. He’s been building pc’s since he was a kid and here I am at 24, still freshly into pc gaming.

The first PC I built: Pentium Pro 180, 16 megs of ram, 200 meg SCSI and a Diamond Stealth video card. It ran on Win 95. I had to boot into DOS to run Quake.

For those that are building their first multi monitor setup on a fresh build. Only have one monitor plugged in for initial BIOS setup and add monitors after it POST's. Made that mistake and ended up unnecessarily rebuilding my entire rig when it was just something that easy.
