About once a year or so, it's time to tkae stock and review the collection to see what's new, what's old and what's gone from the collection. Perhaps most importantly, it's time to see the direction the collection is either taking and where to go next.

@@watchartsci Thanks Bill, yup for my past 30years watches collection , I put purse your strategy always look for watches not for it's brand, but for it's movements, but not necessary for the best movements, I also count much on its case and dial layout, design and historical means. Though not much watches I have at moment, but I try to keep either one or two watches that can represent some characteristic of the decade. So far my collection stretch from 1940s to 2010s.

What a stunning (and inspirational ) collection. I love the absence of the "usual suspects" watches that other prominent KZfaq collectors seem to (exclusively) focus on. Having watched a LOT of your videos, a running theme seems to be the importance of knowledge, especially regarding movements and company collaborations, etc. I wonder if you would consider making a video focusing on your research strategies? Where do you begin your research, what sources do you recommend or use? I'd especially be interested in any watch literature you might recommend. Thanks again for a great video, I'm looking forward to the next.
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Anthony, thanks man! Probably the most important aspect a watch collector can have is curiosity about watches. Separating the hyperbole and made-up 'information' from real information is the most difficult. It's a matter of looking at all aspects of the watch business, getting to know knowledgeable watch collectors and watchmakers. The best published resource for starting out is Ryan Schmidt's "The Wristwatch Handbook." Aside from the great photos of watches, the book does a superb job of explaining the basics of how mechanical watches work. George Daniels' "Watchmaking" is another resource to be used as a reference-reading it from cover-to-cover is near impossible as the book is not organized not as a sequential guide but as a collection of techniques. Many published works can be found online free in PDF format and of course, you'll find numerous online articles from watch magazines. The value of these articles is usually in the nitty gritty about the base movement used in a watch. If all you see is "Swiss Made," the movement is most likely an ETA, Sellita or Soprod. (Usually if an outstanding movement like Vaucher is used, the watch company is wise enough to let that fact be known.) Watch blogs and magazines are dependent on revenues from watch advertisements, and so it's an exception when they don't pull their punches. Finally, look at the watches entered and awarded in the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (gphg.org) - here you'll find watches considered to be the best of the best. Follow the thread from pre-selection to final awards... however, do not ask yourself why Rolex has never entered... Here are some of my videos that explain the thought and research process: Numbers 74, 76, 78, 80, 86, 93, 106, 109, 115 and 116. Sunday's video is going to surprise a lot of viewers- an affordable first step in the path to Exceptional Horology. Kindest regards, Bill

Hey James, a 'Doctor's Watch' can be a lot of things, but here's one that is actually called a 'doc's watch': www.longislandwatch.com/Aristo_4H124_Doctor_Watch_p/4h124.htm They were originally used for taking pulses, and so the jumping seconds in a watch became synonymous with 'Doctor's Watch.' Now on my list, that would be a Habring2 Erwin! Kindest regards, Bill
@BT-ds3hi
@BT-ds3hi 6 жыл бұрын
Hi James, in early 20 century, there appears some watches manufactures to launch out this style of watches for medical personnel to use for easily to take down the patient's pulses rate. images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81AQijLJiCL._SY445_.jpg, and this style of vintage watches if in good condition, vintage watches collectors will be crazy to bid up to get one. The picture shown actually is a modern replica in quartz movemnt and for those Rolex fans, here is a current model example of re-issue of the classical Rolex Prince Doctor watch style. www.bobswatches.com/rolex-blog/rolex-info/doctors-day-cellini-rolex-prince.html Cheers BT

Bill that is just an awesome collection of high end and horological interesting pieces! So, what would I do? Keep one Journe, flip the "almost Calatrva" and the Zenith and buy a Patek annual calendar. Then you need AP in there... At that point you can die a happy man! LOL

Hey SP. Not going to flip either Journe, and as soon as you march yourself over to 9601 Wilshire Blvd (in the Lobby) Beverly Hills and tell them 'Bill sent me' and you want to see the F.P. Journes available, we'll see who's going to flip an FPJ. I have lusted after a Patek Philippe Gondolo for years, but after meeting with a former Grand Prix judge, I'm probably better off keeping my 3468. With H. Mosers and Parmigianis available at great prices, they are more of a temptation as are Lang & Heynes. Cheers, Bill

Hello Bill, having a few gold watches myself, I find them easy to scratch and ding up. I noticed you had some minor scratches and/or dings on your watches. How do you feel about having such scratches and small dings on your high end gold watches? Can you still enjoy them the same as if they were mint? I often get scratches especially in lugs of my gold watches when changing straps. Some cases are harder to perform strap swaps without scratches or minor dings (even when taped up, because gold is quite soft).

do you think f.p. journe chronometre bleu is too expensive now?
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 5 жыл бұрын
Milan, if you're going to get a Bleu, go to your AD and tell him you want a Bleu and get on their waiting list. The list price is actually lower than the used price because the demand is so high. Alternatively, you can get a ±10 year old pre-owned FP Journe in rose gold with a power reserve indicator for around $22,000 or one in platinum for around $24,000. A new Bleu (after a wait of about 2 years) will run around $21,000 but will be worth about $27-29,000 on the pre-owned market. My own preference is the model with the power reserve indicator that's available in rose gold or platinum. Mine has risen in value, but not as much as the Bleu (or my Resonance...) Cheers, Bill

Thank you - trouble is, being in the UK, buying outside the EU, I have to cost in import duty and VAT. This adds I think, in excess of 30% to the advertised price. Keeps you poor this lark doesn't it?

Amazing collection, every watch is a masterpiece, congratulations and thanks for sharing...by the way, which pieces of your collection would you leave behind to get that perpetual calendar? Greetings...

Yes, Oskar, about the perpetual calendar... what about an annual calendar? Then I get to play with it once a year! The PC I like is by H. Moser but I can't afford it; so I'm looking around. Cheers, Bill

Hi Bill, would be great if you could do a in-depth review of D. Dornblüth & Sohn 99.1 or the Q-2010.2 Auf & ab. the 99.1 is heavily modified and 70% in-house, where is Q-2010.2 Auf & ab is completely in house. Very interesting/fulfilling experience dealing with them, you could actually pick the phone and talk to Dirk Dornblüth himself. They have a few others watches which are not in their catalog like Jasmin, 99.C. would be good to hear from you(in-depth review)

Hi Apar, that sounds like a good idea. I've looked at their watches and history, and they have some interesting pieces. That goes into the hopper, and I'll see what I can do. Thanks! Kindest regards, Bill

I like the F.P.Journe Resonance Chronometer. I also liked the Vacheron-Constantine Overseas, but that one you sold off. One interesting fact is that you don't have any Rolex in the collection.

Hi Frantisek! Have have on my FP Journe Chronomètre à Résonance and it's ready for a ride! Had to give up my VC OS for my wife's Bovet. No Rolex yet ... waiting for the right one ... if it ever comes along... Cheers, Bill

Impressive collection. Sometimes a bit too fancy dial for my taste but nevertheless impressive

Thanks Erik. I guess some of my collection looks fancy, but it's just what looked interesting at the time. Have you seen the hands on the Lang & Heyne Frederich III? Those are fancy! ... and interesting ... Cheers, Bill

Felt Bovet with blue dial was not that great looking. Kind of old decor design. Loved the Gold + white dial Bovet. FPJ - IeF white dial is quite classy.

Abhilash, you didn't like the 19Thirty Bovet?! That's a beautiful watch, and you don't seem to be the kind of guy who doesn't like something just because it's different. When the light hits the dial (top and bottom dials) a beautiful light bow appears. It's mesmerizing! If you put one on, it would say, "Abhilash take me home!" ... and you'd do it! Glad you liked the other ones. Cheers, Bill

If you had to get one Rolex there in the collection, whether vintage or modern, which would it be?
@watchartsci

Well, if I had to get to get a Rolex, it'd be a Cellini Prince, and someday I might ... or a Polar Explorer or a Milgauss in green, but there are so many watches I find more interesting, that it might be a while. Kindest regards, Bill
