I woke up this morning to the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen, such a beautiful Luna Moth! I’ve never seen one in my life and actually feel blessed to have seen one. He hung around for about 12 hours ( all through the day he stayed in our gazebo ) when it got dark he took off. Such a cool thing to see

When I was 16, I had a luna moth land on my arm while letting the dog out before bed. It didn't flutter away when I touched it, so I took it inside. Long story short, I had a beautiful pet moth for 2 months. After watching this video and hearing they only really live for a week as adults makes me feel special that I somehow got to have a 5 inch long parrot for that long!

Normally I wouldn't support taking an animal like a luna moth or any moth really from the wild as a pet, but the fact that it didn't run away from you makes me wonder if it had something wrong with it in the first place. Anyway, if it managed to live longer in captivity with you and instead lived a week, I guess it's no harm no foul, although you definitely may have interfered with its reproduction.

I frequently get Luna moths at my back door. They're beautiful and mysterious. Last night one stayed on the ceiling of the eave of the back door. Today it was just sitting on the deck, fluttering its wings. I didn't know if it was dying or what, so I touched its wing and it quickly fluttered about 2 ft. away. I hope it wasn't dying.

tbh, the argument for and against evolution are so good now that you just have to pick a side and stay. I could suggest that they needed the tails in order to survive, but then I could argue that evolution through natural selection and adaptation would not be adherent at this point due to the fact that the phenotype and genotypes would need to process the information to the next of kin; but this would entail the moth to be captured but freed to progress such a response. on the intelligent design side. god did it. no one can know the 'why', only the how, and possibly when. that's like me figuring out how the first amount of life started, or what made the first thing, how did it all start with the universe or life etc. I can find out 'how' (maybe) and if not, I can try, but I can never find out why. if I love someone, why would I help them? ...well it's love, but without it, there is no reason to do it, not much reason to do anything.

Honestly there was no benefit to having a usable mouth. If they don't get eaten their first instinct to to mate. Once that's done there is no need to continue on since they have carried the species to the next generation. The special shape of their wings makes it more likely they will live long enough to breed. Having a usable mouth will not make they any more likely to breed. So they don't have a useable mouth because... They don't need it. Having said that it does seem like an awful existence. Spend your whole life trying not to be eaten. Hibernate and emerge only to have sex with the first member of the opposite species you find then starve to death...
@jizburg

@alejandrinos
@alejandrinos 9 жыл бұрын
They don't need the tails to fly or maneuver. Even if they did the point is still moot because there's no escaping a bat once it detects the target, since they are bigger and faster. The only defense is stealth.
@walterdennisclark
@walterdennisclark 9 жыл бұрын
It is well known in aerodynamics that an airplane with wings can out-maneuver a missile, but to do so the airplane must know when to do so and then pull a number of Gs which comes close to breaking the wings off. What counts is the radius of a maneuver not the speed. Speed only helps in that it is a surprise. Since a vehicle with normal wings can turn inside the radius of a vehicle with stubby wings all you have to do is pull a lot of Gs in an unpredictable direction just before impact.
@alejandrinos
@alejandrinos 9 жыл бұрын
Walter Clark Moths are slow enough that you can catch them with your hands There's no escape for them.
@walterdennisclark
@walterdennisclark 9 жыл бұрын
good point alejandrinos. But still... Cutting off a tail and then counting how many were caught to prove that the tail makes them more invisible... I just don't like it. Maybe without a tail the flight trajectory is straighter and easier to intercept. I'm always suspicious of sexy explanations to interesting observations.
@alejandrinos
@alejandrinos 9 жыл бұрын
Walter Clark I agree that it sounds too good to be true, but I think it'd be really obvious if the moths had less maneverability with their tails cut, obvious enough to cancel the experiment and try something else.

Bud, he clearly explains the completely conceivable (to logical human beings) concept behind evolution. It not only makes sense, it makes more sense than saying a magical being just decided to put it on this planet, because, why the heck not? Just because it's beautiful, doesn't mean it was created by a god. It's beautiful in its own right, because it took thousands of years to change minutely from generation to generation to get to this fantastic point.
