I recently had the amazing opportunity to have Stephen Low of IMAX fame as a guest in my Skymaster during a trip out to ThunderBay Ontario and back. I got to interview Stephen about his exciting, forty plus year career where he produced and directed over twenty large format films about amazing and diverse subject matter all over the globe. Stephen dove on the Titanic eighteen times while filming Titanica, he has chased trains with helicopters all across Canada filming Rocky Mountain Express, he shot inside beaver lodges for his epic Beavers, and has filmed some of the world's most amazing military hardware from the ground and the air while creating Legends of Flight among his many other epic filming adventures.
It is a long flight across Lake Superior and Stephen and I had the gift of time to talk about his spectacular career and we also discussed some of the similarities between what I do now with drones for film and TV and what he did back in the day strapping HUGE IMAX cameras to helicopters (Spoiler Alert - it is A LOT easier now). Come along for a ride and learn about the awesome human that is Stephen Low.

I fly for fun and adventure and I strive to be the best, safest and most professional pilot that can be at all times but I am far from perfect. I have not been flying for a long time (since April 2015) but I always strive to be better. This channel is part of that process and another piece of the puzzle for me. I fly with as many people as I can and I seek out instructors and mentors whenever possible and I recommend that you do as well. I make sure that everyone I share the cockpit with with fits my style of flying and learning and that they can help me take my adventure higher.
Producing this KZfaq channel has made me grow as a pilot and for that I am truly thankful. Scouring through all the footage has shown me my strengths and weaknesses and that process has been humbling to say the least. I recommend videoing your own flights, watching them with an open mind and maybe even sharing them. There has been a lot of great feedback and wisdom in the comments on my videos as well. I always appreciate the constructive and almost always positive feedback. Keep it coming!
Please note that my videos are highly edited and some of the context of these flights is altered in order to keep the story moving. These videos are for entertainment purposes only and should not be considered a replacement for professional instruction by a certified flight instructor.
Fly safe and have fun!

Wow that in-depth chat with Stephen Low was fascinating…… iMax, gosh seems pretty dated now but what a revelation in film when it arrived. Amazing how the high definition light weight camera and drone equipment must have revolutionised the industry. Great content Tom, loved how that front blew through and left you flying in the sunshine. Music on KZfaq seems to divide opinion, but personally I like your choice in the early part of the video. Sometimes the levels were competing between music and voice, it’s tricky to always get right, especially as what one hears in the edit doesn’t always sound the same on the Tube…… have to commend that audio quality at the beginning when you stepped out of your hangar into the wind, which mic set up do you use? Keep up the great content 👍

Thanks for watching. Yes, Stephen Low is a DUDE!! I couldn't believe all the stuff that man and his company accomplished and he was so generous sharing his stories (while he was stuck in my airplane).

Great video Tom. I see you've unlocked the chest rig as an accessory. What's packed inside that sucker?

Yeah, I took a page from EB's book on that one. On longer flights over remote areas I like to have all the really important stuff on my person in the event of an emergency and "I have to run away from a burning airplane". If the worst were to happen I would still have my Garmin InReach 67i satellite communicator, cell phone, light, batteries, a knife, fire starting stuff, some food and first aid.

@@tomairtv not yet! I'm going to do it in the summer of 2024. I really want to get running and follow it up with having a plane or being in a position to comfortably rent one to keep up with my flight training.
