This is the Holy Grail for me, thanks Johan. SRV, love him or hate him, changed blues and brought a dying art back to the forefront along with all the greats that influenced him. Walked away loving the Brownface more, I guess I'm biased towards 10s....*side note---- Tommy is building me a Catulator for a clone i'm having built. I already have a BFSR by him with 2 JBLs E110s and 2 Celestions G10s, best SR I've ever heard. Thanks for introducing me to his work years ago. you da man

Hi, Johan! Strat with "Brownface" is very bright, and with LP the sound is more ballanced. In the case of "Black Vibro" its not so much trebles. But when I think about the guitar with other instruments, maybe that's the best way. But the most fine is LP with the black Vibro. Fender always gives to the trebles more place. But maybe I am in LP mood today..:-) SEE YOU! Zigfrid

I love these old fenders and I believe the sweet tone (very slight break up) is largely because of those vintage speakers. Negative feedback eliminated can work to your advantage or against you (depends what your playing) as far as circuit design Euro vs. American, Awesome demo, thank you!

Sounds great! I heard that Alice Cooper tone too. Those Blonde/Brown 40 watt amps are some of my favorite amps of all time! I used to have one of those brown vibroverbs, I really miss that amp, the 2x10 supers are nice too. That Black amp really likes humbuckers! I recently got a '61 Bandmaster with the 1x12 tone ring cab, I still need to go through it and make sure it's tuned up and safe to run. I'm hoping it will have that Blonde/Brown 40 watt magic, pretty sure it will.

Loved the Strat tones, definitely SRV like. Both sounded good but I think I like the Strat paired with a Fender amp a little better. Both amps sounded great too, hard to decide if one is better than the other. Not sure why people are making that comparison. They do sound a little different I suppose, but it’s sort of hard for me to tell.

So, Oxfords in the 63, big alnico 15" in the 64.Big difference.Biggest difference is the small OT in the brownface which puts out about 28w and contributes to that grainy breakup sound. And the Oxfords break down quite quick somost swap them (mine has Eminence GA10s) 64 SRV w tubescreamer is probably killer but i'll keep my 63 brownface.5751 in V1/V2 instead of 12ax7..

Wonderful amps! I tend to prefer Blackface Fenders, but in this one, the '63 Brownface has absolutely astounding tones. Very harmonically rich with overtones, and just the right kind of overdrive. The '64 seems a little bit thin and narrow by comparison. (Which might be just the thing to sit in a band mix.) The clear choice is to use an ABY pedal and run both, with the Blackface set cleaner, with more reverb and just a hint of tremolo. Meanwhile, the '63 is set dry and full tilt. That would be some godlike noise. Great video, as always. Only one question: what's going on with Simon's feet?

Ah there is that 63 strat I want as well. Something about the blackface just has that extra mojo. I like the LP on the brownface more and the strat on the blackface. The Strat through both amps is a rock solid groove! Les paul is cool too of course..I have been wanting to hear some of these amps. I think maybe it is a tiny bit better with the 15", maybe.. I still have not heard one in person though, just on here..How much would one of these go for in $? Is the re-issue supposedly with the Stevie Ray modification good, better, or worse, than these? I have not seen that one for sale either..it seems these are kind of rare.

Hi Johan great video. Just one question does the 1964 blackface vibroverb that you're playing have the preamp on V1 changed with a 5751 tube, as SRV amps? It reduces gain in about 30% compared to a 12AX7, and as consequence increasing headroom.

Sooo good! Love it! The brown face seems to have alnico speakers and the blackface seems to have square back ceramic magnet Eminence speakers. IMHO the ‘63 brownface had such a creamy mid tone that was so much better than the ‘64 blackface. I wonder if there were significant circuit changes or if it was all speaker differences?
