Charlie had 1 tone pod. Also in ‘89 he added the SRV stickers to the pick guard.

I've heard a bunch of "Charley" guitars over the years, but they didn't sound quite right. This one does sound really good. Hard to tell without SRVs hands of course.

Great guitar, great playing :) I've always been fascinated by this guitar and wanted to experiment by getting a Robert Cray Signature and replacing the pickups with the lipstick pickups. Might be a idea to try that for a future video.

If I'm not mistaken Charley also made a candy apple red strat for Doyle Bramhall II. It had a reverse headstock and I was a fan of this guitar as a child (its tour with Roger Waters "In the Flesh"). I wonder what happened to her, I never saw Doyle play it again.

Those original Lipsticks were very low inductance, having only ~3.75k of HF 42AWG wire around an A6 bar, the Brass cases over which roll off the high-end to form a dip in the upper-mids below a peak that could be up in the 8~10kHz range with a low capacitance cable. I don't see the point of copying another player's gear, but they are very different sounding than fender style pickups. A hardtail can also warm up the sound a bit so it's not too metallic. Good combination.

If you want to get into something like this for "cheap", you can't beat the Danelectro 84. I have one. It sounds and plays great. I wanted the white but when I got it absolutely no one had it. I had to settle for black unfortunately.

Are those actual danelectro lipstick pickups or are they Seymour duncan ones? Sounds good either way but real danelectros are bigger than seymour duncans version and those look smaller to me.

What made Stevie Stevie, were Stevie's hands. Stevie could be playing a $75 guitar from Amazon, and he'd still be Stevie. And no one I've ever heard even comes close to being Stevie. I mean people can learn Stevie's songs and his licks, but they all fall completely short. And I don't think he'd approve. Stevie would want people to be themselves.

I think you're absolutely right in that he would tell his disciples to find their own sound, but imitation is the highest form of flattery.. Stevie spent a whole lot of his life trying to emulate and sound like his heroes, so I think he'd actually find it pretty awesome and overwhelming that so many folks want to sound like him and play his his songs/licks. It's just the kind of person he was!

You can get those tones out of a partscaster just as easily as a made in Corona, Ca Strat. I have both, and to be fair live in the area of old Fender. A well put together partscaster is basically a custom shop job
