The Stockman pattern slipjoint pocket knife is one of the most popular styles of traditional pocketknives in America. While it's history doesn't go as far back as the Barlow, the origins of the blade styles likely does. Developed around 1890, it has become a favorite with ranchers, cowboys, farmers, outdoorsmen and users of every description. The versatility of the Stockman speaks to it's popularity.

I understood that the stockman was designed for sheep managment. There is a desease in the hooves which make the hooves to overgrow uneven and slanted outwords. The sheepfoot was meant to reshape them. Spey blade was for males castrations and the clip point for dressing. I miss the sowbelly stockman, which is an adaptation for wood working and whittling. Very good video. Thank you!

And for those that don't know..its also the knife of choice for today's "Stockman"...stocking shelves because of that wonderful sheepsfoots box tape cutter blade.

I have a few equal end stockmans with a punch blade, and I’ve always called them cattle knives, although that’s prob a generic term. I’ve really come to love stockmans in general. If you can get past the blade rub, which doesn’t bother me, they’re great edc. I started getting the large stockmans but quickly discovered the sowbelly stockman was my fav. It’s usually 3.75 closed, a little smaller than a regular sized large stockman, but it just fits my had better, and the sowbelly pattern lends the blades to be a different angle when cutting, which I find helpful. I love my American made vintage knives, but I gotta thank Rough Ryder fii out r getting me into slipjoints. They’re made well, solid, lifetime warranty, and m oh at are $15-$20, even their carbon steel ones. So I was able to buy a bunch of patterns to see which I preferred, and as it turns out, they’re great users. I find myself collecting vintage American, German, and Japanese knives, but I carry the Rough Ryders more, cuz I feel like if I lost it, it’s not a big deal. Another great video buddy, really enjoy watching your stuff.

I will have to look into the sowbelly patterns. I have been tempted by the Rough Rider knives. I guess I will have to give them a try. Thanks for watching and your comments!

The punch blade for a stockman is fantastic. I wish Case would get back to this version. Hard to beat two blades and a punch for utility.
